Hannay apparently is not going to change all the staff which the club will also like with not having to spend more money...

I will assume Cheika and Demetriou wanted to make more changes to things. Demetriou would have learnt from what happened at South's and wanted big changes.
Who wouldn't the club is a mess....

That’s my understanding.

There wasn’t a lot of fall out from their rank and file that he backed out.

He’s still quite junior and unknown.

I think you’d be better served with Baz. If he’s appointed now you could start planning properly. Hit the ground running next year.

Hannay career

Souths Logan Magpies[edit]​

On 9 October 2013, Hannay was appointed head coach of the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup for the 2014 season.[21] Over three seasons with the club, Hannay's highest place finish with the Magpies was 7th in 2016, missing the finals on points differential. He coached 70 games, winning 28, for a 40% winning percentage. In 2016 and 2017, he coached the Queensland under-18 rugby league team, losing both games to New South Wales.[22][23]

North Queensland Cowboys[edit]​

In 2017, he returned to the North Queensland Cowboys as an assistant coach to Paul Green.[24] In his first season on the coaching staff, the Cowboys qualified for the NRL Grand Final, losing to the Melbourne Storm.[25] In 2018, he joined the Queensland coaching staff as an assistant to Kevin Walters, spending just one year in the role.[26][27]

On 20 July 2020, Hannay was named as the interim head coach of the North Queensland Cowboys following the resignation of Paul Green.[28] In Round 17 of the 2020 NRL season, after five straight losses, Hannay earned his first win as an NRL head coach after the Cowboys defeated the St George Illawarra Dragons 23–22 in golden point.[29] On 22 September 2020, after being overlooked as full-time head coach of the Cowboys, Hannay announced he would leave the club, despite being under contract for the 2021 season.[30]

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks[edit]​

On 17 November 2020, Hannay joined the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks as an assistant coach.[31] On 14 April 2021 Hannay was named as caretaker head coach following the sacking of John Morris[32]

In round 11 of the 2021 NRL season, he earned his first win as Cronulla-Sutherland interim coach as the club defeated fierce rivals St. George Illawarra 13–12.[33]

Hannay is currently an assistant coach with the Queensland State of Origin Team.

Ryles career

Coaching career[edit]​

Ryles began his coaching career in 2012 with NSW State of Origin under 20s side as their assistant coach, which also carried over to 2013. Both years were successful in defeating Queensland's under 20s team.

After his retirement as a player in the National Rugby League Ryles accepted a head coaching role for Western Suburbs Red Devils for the 2014/2015 seasons.

At the end of 2015 Ryles was approached by Melbourne Storm to join their staffing team as assistant coach where he held this position until autumn 2020.

While at Melbourne Storm from 2016–2020, Ryles has also periodically assisted in coaching England's national rugby union team.

In 2016 and 2017 Ryles was appointed assistant coach for Junior Kangaroos.

In autumn 2020, Ryles joined England as skills coach on a full-time basis.[8] However he missed the 2021 Six Nations Championship due to travel restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.[9] He left the role in May 2021.[10]

In 2022 he joined the Sydney Roosters as an assistant coach.

In 2023 he joined the coaching staff of the Australia national rugby union team for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In 2024, he returned to the Melbourne Storm and is now the Coaching Coordinator there.

Its alright being a spitbag to Bellamy in the box just barking whatever Bellamy is yelling at towards the trainer on the walkie.

But history proves there isnt much success elsewhere.

Brad Arthur is probably one of the best coaches to come out of the Bellamy system and has a better win% record then Madge who is the only one to win a comp.

Seibold - 47% - Wooden Spoon with Brisbane

History actually proves Bellamy is probably the best at producing coaches over the last 15 or so years....he has produced 7 coaches, 5 of those coaches have taken sides to the finals...3 GF's, 1 won a comp. Kearney is the only one that has failed. Pay inherited a shit show which has taken CC and Gus 3 years to fix.......

Pretty decent results actually. Who has better results then that?

Compared to assistants of other premier winning coaches over the last 20 or so years:

Robinson - Fitz/Holbrook, some poor final performances....
Stuart - apart of pay / Cartwright who else has coached? Cartwright made finals a few times
Cleary - Barrett did nothing, Brennan was sacked, CC no finals yet. Webster made the finals
Bennett - JD sacked, price sacked, Ivan H sacked, Stone sacked....who else has really kicked on apart from Bellamy
Green - Payten made finals once, no one else.
Flanagan - Morris, don't think has produced anyone else
Madge - anyone?
Hasler - Toovey, anyone?
Sheens - anyone? Maybe Bellamy.
Folks - anyone? Probably Stuart

You would put John Morris next to Flanagan, Toovey next to Hasler. Though it’s sometimes hard to attribute when assistants move around before being appointed Head Coach somewhere (like Webster who was assistant under Andrew McFadden at Warriors and Jason Taylor at Tigers before he ever worked under Cleary).

Tooves has a very good coaching record and returned to the game last year.

He’s worth investigating.

And young Neil Henry, butchered in dramatic circumstances in favour of the late,great Paul Green. Very slick coach, sides tumbled out of the glittering finals in dramatic circumstances.

That's correct, the dragons agreed to a 4y deal, but at the last hurdle, Ryles wanted x,y &z meaning he wanted control of certain circumstances, dragons said no, so Ryles backed out.

Would the Eels be willing to give full control to Ryles?.

I'd rather a coach who has more control rather than a yes man. Respect to Ryles over the Dragons situation.

What stats can anyone pull out on Hannay besides sitting next to Billy. What about Ryles besides hearing Bellamy blow up in the box

All I know about Ryles is that he was the defensive coach at the Roosters in 2022 .

The three amigos doing the interviews can't go with either of these two otherwise we're looking at multiple bottom 4 finishes.
The only reason people are choosing Hannay is because they think he's going to pull a few qldr's to parra. That's it.

You could say the same about Fitzgibbon, Ciraldo and Webster. All were assistants and now look like they can coach.

They have to start somewhere.

Based on the wiki history presented above Ryles looks to have the better pedigree and I like the fact that he ( reportedly) wants to bring in a whole new coaching staff and also was clear on what he needed for success at the dragons and didn’t compromise on that

as others have said passing on Cheika is an absolute opportunity missed imo he could be the closest to Bennett in terms of managing the individual to get the best out of themselves …. In the absence of Cheika I’m in for Ryles

Yeah but If BA had all the decision making powers, Lomax would be a free agent by now.

Actually, this needs to be said to our playing group. They are still patting themselves on the back after making the GF....and the bush coach would have been blowing smoke up the arseholes rather than say some home truths like this..
