Blues bats dominate England

November 12, 2006

NSW trio Phil Jaques, Simon Katich and Michael Clarke kept England under pressure through heavy scoring on day one of the three-day cricket match at the SCG.

In a day of domination for the home side, Jaques hit his second hundred against the tourists in three days and Katich and Clarke posted half-centuries as the Blues reached a commanding 5-325 at stumps.

The trio, who cannot crack a place in the Australia team at the moment, ensured England's bowlers spent a long day in the field, and also made sure the visitors' batsmen will most likely bat only once this match.

This is England's penultimate hit-out before the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, which starts November 23.

Jaques struck 11 fours and two sixes in his 107, which came just 48 hours after he hammered 112 for the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra.

Katich scored 68 in a 155-run stand with Jaques, while Clarke made 50.

Wicketkeeper Daniel Smith was 36 not out and all rounder Moises Henriques 25 not out at the close of play.

With both sides able to play 14 men (11 batters), England gave four fast bowlers a start (with a fifth, Sajid Mahmood off the field most of the day), but only Steve Harmison and James Anderson claimed a wicket each.

Spinner Ashley Giles, who had Jaques and Katich both caught in the outfield, was England's most successful bowler and finished the day with figures of 2-46.

Fellow spinner Monty Panesar (1-54) also bowled a decent spell late in the day after only three overs against the PM's XI, and claimed the wicket of Clarke, who was out guiding a catch to slip.

Captain Andrew Flintoff was the best of the quicks, and his figures of 0-52 should have included a wicket, but Marcus Trescothick dropped a chance at slip off Katich when the Blues skipper was on 14.

yeah, gotta feel for him

- semis of the Champions Trophy
- best union team on the planet
- current tri-nations league champions (and current form team)

all this (and much more) with a national population less than Sydney - I can see why you're envious devil boy

....dude, why would you bring the argument in this direction buddy? Aside from Union the Aussies have it over the Kiwis in basically every sport at the moment (I think you guys won the last bball series as well).

And how are the Kiwis the form league team? You've lost your last three games against Australia.

All you've done is open yourself up to a barrage of angry posts from El D and friends.

Henriques looks promising

Is the beat-up about Jaques real though - I've seem footage of him destroying mediocre bowling on batting wickets - his entry to test cricket wasn't special but he hasn't had much of a chance yet...

Obviously he's going to be a regular in the next few years, but we've all heard Australians go crazy over batsmen - half of them tend to be worth the wraps, and the other half not...

bottom line is for this series it doesn't matter, if you can't beat that English team there will be a few careers ended

Rain seems to be not helping the Poms practise. Henriques out early this morning but outside of that rain has interrupted proceedings and will do for a good part of the day....

First class average of 58 suggest he is going well. Has had 1000 run seasons the last four years in England and I'm pretty sure he has had at least three now with NSW so he is pretty consistent.

For Worcestershire he had 1100+ from 8 games. Compare that with someone like Lehmann who played 15 and scored around 1700 he has done well....

Once he is set he hangs around for a good while.

Meanwhile Watson was the only QLD bowler to not take a wicket against WA, and was then dismissed for a duck today.

He'll carry great form into the Gabba Test when he gets picked.

It was a damn good ball apparently though. It happens. Still has more form than Clarke.

A duck and no wickets beats a half-century against the team we'll be playing this summer? Beats me Locky.

Watson has scored more runs in the ODI'S though. Everyone can get a duck FFS. It happens. Watson has consistently performed this year to be honest.

Haha, you fool. When Clarke scores mountains of runs in the ODIs you say they don't count and aren't related to Test match selection, but Watson scores a few runs and suddenly they're the best indicator! Turn it up Lockster.

And if CLARKE got a duck, you'd probably start a new f*cking thread about how 'the Wonderboy failed again'!

You're a joke locky! Hahaha.

Difference is that Watson has had more form than Clarke. His 2nd last Pura Cup game- 203 n.o in the Shield final. Plus he is in form with the bat in the ODI's. I don't rate ODI form much. The fact is that Watson's 4 day form is better. He averages 50 compared to Clarke's dismal 40!
