Blues bats dominate England
November 12, 2006
NSW trio Phil Jaques, Simon Katich and Michael Clarke kept England under pressure through heavy scoring on day one of the three-day cricket match at the SCG.
In a day of domination for the home side, Jaques hit his second hundred against the tourists in three days and Katich and Clarke posted half-centuries as the Blues reached a commanding 5-325 at stumps.
The trio, who cannot crack a place in the Australia team at the moment, ensured England's bowlers spent a long day in the field, and also made sure the visitors' batsmen will most likely bat only once this match.
This is England's penultimate hit-out before the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, which starts November 23.
Jaques struck 11 fours and two sixes in his 107, which came just 48 hours after he hammered 112 for the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra.
Katich scored 68 in a 155-run stand with Jaques, while Clarke made 50.
Wicketkeeper Daniel Smith was 36 not out and all rounder Moises Henriques 25 not out at the close of play.
With both sides able to play 14 men (11 batters), England gave four fast bowlers a start (with a fifth, Sajid Mahmood off the field most of the day), but only Steve Harmison and James Anderson claimed a wicket each.
Spinner Ashley Giles, who had Jaques and Katich both caught in the outfield, was England's most successful bowler and finished the day with figures of 2-46.
Fellow spinner Monty Panesar (1-54) also bowled a decent spell late in the day after only three overs against the PM's XI, and claimed the wicket of Clarke, who was out guiding a catch to slip.
Captain Andrew Flintoff was the best of the quicks, and his figures of 0-52 should have included a wicket, but Marcus Trescothick dropped a chance at slip off Katich when the Blues skipper was on 14.
