Eric Grothe announces his retirement
13/12/2010 10:21:42 AM

Parramatta Eels winger Eric Grothe has today announced his retirement from the NRL.

The 30-year-old will not fulfill his one-year contract with the Club in 2011 after striving to come back from a knee injury.

Grothe says it is a sad day but is looking forward to taking on many new projects in his life.

“I’m going to miss the Club and especially the boys, but I feel it is the right time to move on,” he says.

“I‘ve had many injuries throughout my career and it’s getting harder to recover from them. I loved my many years at Parra but I have other things I want to concentrate on now.”

Grothe made his debut with the Parramatta Eels in 1999 against the North Queensland Cowboys. He joined the Sydney Roosters in 2002 before rejoining the Eels in 2004.

The Eagle Vale junior made his representative debut in 2005, playing for City and Australia in the same season. In 2006 he played all three Origins for New South Wales.

The talented winger played 142 NRL games and scored 268 points from 67 tries.

Grothe will now concentrate on his personal training business and music and TV career.

So we've now lost Grothe, Tahu, Inu and Wright replaced with Atkins, Walker and Chris Hicks. Add to that no Mateo, the only bloke with any flair, we have the slowest halfback in the game, our star hasn't trained all off season and wont be back until atleast January, Joel Reddy our only decent 3/4 is doubtful to start the season. I hope I'm wrong but 2011 looks doomed. As i said i hope i am wrong. But its ok we've now got atleast 1 million available on the salary cap

One of my faves, but just so damn injury prone which was a shame seeing as he had endless talent.

This news has really upset me. A champion of the game, that I don't think fulfilled his potential. Will be sorely missed.

Surely this off season has to go down as the worst for any first grade team, in the history of rugby league.

Massive loss for Parra next season, we really missed him from dummy half this year. Whenever we were struggling he would always seem to get us 10 hard earned metres.

OMG! Im devestated.. I was actually looking thru some old pics of the boys yesterday. Caylo, Hindy and Ecks and I was tearing up at the fact that we'd lost Caylo, and how hard it would be when we have to say goodbye to Eric and Hindy.. I didnt think it would be the next bloody day!!!!
