I'd just like to apologise for dropping the ball on last round's articles ... my hard drive exploded, and it's been a bit of a mission to get online.

I would have put more of the best up this week, but now most of them are (unfortunately) out of date.

Keep watching though ... there's still two more matches to be played this year, and plenty of quality articles to come!

I don't usually read F7's, but I saw the one by I bleed green on the LU main page. The one about Wayne Bennett not evolving with the modern changes to the game. It seemed to be a well-written article.

But the opening comment, comparing Tony Carroll's appearance to that of a Neanderthal, or whatever was being implied, is a borderline racist comment. At least, in the racially sensitive atmosphere in N. America, especially the US, that comment would be way outside the bounds of what's acceptable.

Is it an ok comment in Australian eyes? I'd be interested to hear opinions. Also I'd be interested to hear if MysteryGirl agrees with me from her American perspective.

But is Tonie Carroll even black/brown? I dunno what his ancestry is but I would've thought it was largely anglo-saxon. I think it's just a comment about him being ugly, a widely-held sentiment.

Sorry if I'm wrong about that, but he looks at least partly "black/brown" to me. And if so, my comment stands, even if the write didn't mean to be racist.

There is no way that it was intended to be racist, that never came into it. I could've named Scott Minto, Brett Finch, myself, or anyone else with a shocking melon. Like TH said, the comparison was only used because a lot of people have called him gorilla man in the past, and it's got nothing to do with his race. I apologise if it offended anyone, but there's no way it was meant to be construed like that.

On a lighter note, I'm stoked to have my articles from the most important games of the year on the front page. It's certainly been a long time between drinks for me. :D

Talk about drawing your long bows.

Canadian Steve, with respect, I think you're the one making a judgment based on the colour of a man's skin here. At the very least you're being over-sensitive and reading too much into it.

It never even crossed my mind that there was something racist about IBG's essay. He merely used evolution as a light hearted metaphor to kick off a fine written piece.

It has been said that Tonie Carroll has a mug that only a mother could love. He's a great player though and one who is well respected throughout the rugby league community.

btw, he was born in NZ. I have no idea what his family background is, European perhaps. But imo, its totally irrelevant.

Thats pretty tight. 3 articles from each team - it shows how evenly matched these two sides were. And it feels pretty damn good to see mine up there.

First off, if Carroll is indeed European then I apologize for being off-base. I'd seen his picture before on bbc.com when he played in England, and I was sure he was black and/or aboriginal. Now I look at pics on the Broncos site and I'm not so sure.

However, I am sure that if a similar comment was made about a black American athlete (such as former NBA player Patrick Ewing, who was once taunted by signs in an opposing college basketball crowd calling him Peking man), it would be considered racist for sure. And quite inflammatory at that. I find it interesting that even if Carroll has some "black or brown" background, the comment by IBG is considered acceptable in Aussie culture.

Let me say though that I don't know IBG and I don't mean to accuse him of anything. Also I know this topic might be more suited to 4C, and I won't discuss it further here, unless someone aks me to.

Canadian Steve, you are completely off the mark with these comments about IBG. IBG is a top person and maybe you should think twice before shooting your mouth off again.

I have acknowledged that I may have been "off the mark" - depending on Carroll's racial background.

I'm sure IBG is a top person.

I will think twice next time - but I still may shoot my mouth off anyway. :)

But not in this forum eh Steve? There's a written rule about not bringing arguments into the F7s and that people should leave disgareements at the door.

As you've already said, the best forum for this is 4 Corners. That's what its there for.

Offcourse you're more than welcomed to particiate in the F7s. :)
