Fan ownership model

Any fan is able to become a member of the Parramatta Eels Leagues Club.
Those fans can then vote on who sits on the board. Basically, the fans do run the club...and we're f**king shit at it apparently.

That’s the Leagues club, not the football club.

That’s the Leagues club, not the football club.

For many years the Leagues Club board had control over the First Grade team/20's team...basically the only thing the Football Club took care of was the juniors.

Denis Fitzgerald set it up that way so he would have complete power.

After 20 years and some of the best teams ever assembled the lack of interest in Melbourne really is staggering.

This along with other facts were sent with the announcement to members emails

compared to the AFL it seems the Storm are a lot smaller than they are down here, but the stats show the proof

Who the f**k buys newspapers these days? Cafes (to put on the counter to read while you're waiting) and people over 50. Hardly representative of the entire population. Most people with a heartbeat get their news online.
Storm are claiming to have the largest social media following out of all the sports teams in Melbourne (so including AFL), this is a better representation of engagement nowadays than newspapers

Those numbers are utter rubbish. If you believe that, you also believe that the Swans are the most popular team in the country.

Just because you liked something of Facebook doesn't mean your buying into their ideals.

I liked a picture of my cousins new baby and that thing had a face like a slapped arse

Buy a membership at the Leagues Club. The Leagues Club owns the Football Club. The members are the owners.

This ain't revolutionary stuff in Australian sport.

So your $5 social member is a part owner in the football club as well? In my experience the Leagues club and the football club have always been seperate entities.

Separate entities, yes. But the Football Club entity is owned by the Leagues Club. In the Cronulla case you previously had to pay about $40 a year for Football Club membership (I think that might have been removed now though). That would allow you to vote on Football Club matters. Most important strategic financial matters are really covered under the Leagues Club banner anyway.

In any case, at the end of the day the people who ultimately own/control both entities are the members. And they are fans. Unless they are there for the cheap booze and schnitty.

Juniors went financially bust too

Melbourne Storm rate pretty well on TV in Melbourne. They have done what they had to do in an AFL town and positioned themselves as everyone's second favourite side behind their AFL team. Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cam Smith make appearances on popular AFL TV shows. I hate the fact that this has to be the case because I can't stand AFL but I understand why they do it and it is a smart move. They'll be fine in the long-term, they have a nice niche in the city now.

As Melbourne got owned in the Grand Final last weekend,I can understand why they are looking at a fan "ownership" model.
