If you are talking short distance 20-40m, I'd like to nominate

Joel Reddy
Luke Burt
Wade McKinnon

in that order
Reddy got chased down by matt utai and thrown into touch

We had the fastest backline in 07 and we will have it again in 08 with Bani coming in for Hicks.

IMO i havent seen a player in my time with quicker acceleration than Matty Bowen. He is extremely quick over that initial 40m but loses a bit after that, but he has usually made enough of a lead to get him to the line. Not my field of expertise but probably something to do with his smaller frame perhaps???

All the players mentioned in this thread... at their peak would be a great race.

Personally, from what I have seen Amos Robertts would win IF he was in a running mood. Dude has wheels.

They have extremely quick wingers and fullback. Many teams have pace in those jerseys. Manly haven't got speedsters in their centres though. Matai, Bell and Lyon aren't all that quick.

I don't think they have the fastest backline. I'd back Panthers against them. At any rate, the pace difference in almost every case could be cancelled out by whoever got the headstart.

Aku if he gets a start in NRL this year would be a chance.

Ran a few sub 11s in year 10 at high school, and was getting faster before switching to RL.

I still think Tahu holds the best 40m at the Knights, 4.8.

Now if we want to talk speed over 20-40, Jerome Bettis comes to mind. 115kg and a 40 yards (not meters) of 4.5. Steelers though, so hardly comparable to NRL

Mate Fui has the fastest recorded sustained sprint at the Eels of any player other than Eric Grothe.

That is a power measurement as much as any but in a stright line he is bloody fast for his size.

Thats incredible for a man his size.

What does he weigh?

Wesser is his day was explosive, currently at the moment i would put Lawrence up there as well, a couple of times this year he put yards on other very fast players when he made breaks.

Bowen for quick accelaration is awesome too...only needs a slight gap and he is through with pure speed......

Im pretty sure a couple of seasons back i remeber Eric grothe running down bowen and i was thinking how quick is grothe for a bigger winger, actually come to think of it i think grothe made the break and bowen couldnt catch him

Lyon aint slow my friend, you stick with your backline but im pretty sure we would run rings around them for speed.

I didn't say Lyon was slow. I said he isn't all that quick. You won't see him making a break from 20m out from his line and running the length of the field to score. You could quiet easily picture, Wesser, Stewart, Gordon, Hicks, Jennings etc. doing that.

As for running rings around our backline with speed, keep dreaming (our backline is what lead to us beating Manly also).
Wesser vs Stewart - About even.
Gordon vs Hicks - About even.
Jennings vs Matai/Lyon - Jennings by a mile.
Blair vs Bell - Blair by a bit.
Rooney vs Robertson - Robertson by miles.

Apart from Rooney, our backs are extremely quick. Rhys Wesser next season should be back to his best. Played with an injured hamstring in a few games this year and was still above average in pace. When we had Youngquest replacing Rooney, our backline was insanely quick. Likewise with Daniela. Unfortunately both those players made our defence even worse then it was.

Blair over Bell?
Penrith backline might be pacy, but youve got to have speed between the ears..something penrith sadly lacked last year, hopefully Petero calms 'em down.

Blair is quick and powerful.

And they're definitely pacy. They can pile on the points aswell. They just lacked any form of communication with each other when it came to defence. We could defend well for a long period of time, then suddenly it would all fall apart and there would be massive holes right across the field. The Warriors game at the end of the season, just before halftime was a perfect example of this.

If you exclude Rooney and include Daniela... we would be top 4 for pace easily.

Although you then have the Daniela/Jennings combination which is terrible in defence. I'm just hoping Elliott can get Daniela up to first grade quality defence for next season so that we don't have Rooney slowing our backline down.
