Craig young was an absolutely fantastic prop! And he was a fantastic leader on top of that as well!

He had every skill that a prop should have & more. He even had a kicking game courtesy of his soccer background. He was masterful at offloading in traffic either through the line or before it. He was a virtual playmaker when he passed before the line.

And he was as tough a prop as there has ever been in rugby league. Ask Peter Kelly or Steve Roach what they thought. Ask Peter Sterling who he thought was the toughest prop!

He was the player of the tour in both '78 & '82. He came back from the '82 tour busted and struggled with injury for the next 2 seasons. In '85 & injury free he rediscovered the form & he was the prop of the year. He had retired from rep football but all comementators called for his inclusion in the state & national teams.

After 1985 he certainly wasn't the player he had once been. But he was certainly worth every single wrap he was ever given. He would be one of the finest props to ever lace on a boot.

Well written - gregstar ! Your account brought the memories back in living colour , as well as the cheers from the crowd themselves .

That's why it's also disappointing how Jason Ryles' career turned out.

If it wasn't for his continual shoulder injuries, that guy had champion written all over him.

He was a playmaker before, through & after the line. And a sensational one.

He had a couple of shoulder reconstructions and it was so bad after the last one that he had to relearn how to move it! As it was, he was still solid afterwards.

Furthermore he was a funny pr*ck as well.

Micheal beattie, great captain a real leader

Loved watching the great teams of the late seventies and into the eighties, what a time to be alive!

A 10s eighties funny fact -

Michael Beattie and Brian Johnston were partners in a picture framing business in the 80s

Herron should have stayed a soft drink driver cause other than his kicking he was a shocking footballer........mind you Ross Conlon played Origin purely on his abilities to kick goals, so carry on.

In the 80's Eric Grothe (snr) and Paul Mares who played for Parramatta, both had their own sports stores. Well I am pretty sure they got done fire bombing one of their cars, with the intention of doing an insurance job. lol

I still have Eric Grothe (snr) as one of my wingers in my best team of all time.

Paul Mares was a top young prop or 2nd rower too, he would be a top chance to make my best Parra team of all time. I have never bothered to pick my best Parra team, but I would take Mares over Hindmarsh.

Garry jack also owned a sports store

Yes, certain parra players were done with insurance fraud, involving a car

Steve Bowden owned, sold and again bought the Shanneys Hotel Hurstville at a nice profit. Steve is a really nice guy

I remember when Steve sold the Hurstville pub and told the "investors" he wasn't interested in selling. They said here's a blank check, just fill in the figure you want, so he did.

Nah , Hindmarsh far better than Mares ( IMO ) and had a far bigger motor. Mares did the bombing and copped a reprimand I think . Lucky ( like Liddard ) to play in such a great team.

Fat Albert was a very talented and deceptively quick ball playing prop who had the distinction of popping over 2 field goals as well during his very good career.
I think it was Kevin Tamati who put a golden on his chin during a test match?

A tribute to pigskin Beattie is the fact that despite having Rodgers, Quinn, Johnston, O'Connor, Johns at the club during his career, he was a mainstay in the centres alongside all of them. That is a fair effort!

he was hampered in the '85 gf by an injury in the semi which curtailed his effectiveness. He was f*cked by injury in '86 and then he entered our club's gumby years from '87-'91. He was pretty good in '92, but he probably saved his worst ever club game for the gf where he was dreadful. Such a pity because he was possibly the best defensive centre alongside Farrah in the '80s.

1 against Wests in 84
1 against Souths in 87 which was the only points he scored that year so not sure if that saved him from a nudey run?
Left footer if I remember correctly.

Andrew Farrar coming in late to knock the daylights out of Michael O'Conner , very late indeed .
As our goal kicker he was a marked man unfortunately .

& Bilko & the touchies did nothing.

Steve Linane had an absolute shocker with his kicking game as well.

That was one frustrating day. It promised so much & delivered a nut-punch.

I remember being impressed by the fully painted in-goals & thinking how cool & modern they looked given it was the first time for a gf!

I ran off & bought some Winnie Reds!

I meant when Tamati decked him.
Cheers sorry for the misread
I got it wrong re the punch up
Tamati and Dowling locked horns and had a real stink in 85 I think.
Mark Broadhurst dropped Albert with 1 punch putting him right on his arse in 1980.
