Felt like crying over my beer this evening

Happy for Jimmy by why the f**k we didn't sign him on for 3 seasons?

The dumbest recruitment/retention decision we have made in my lifetime. After losing RTS I thought it was imperative we kept our halves pairing for a couple more seasons as I thought we would struggle for points this year if we didn't.

It's like a dagger to heart heart watching Jimmy do his thing. We f**ked up big time and have no one to blame but ourselves.

Who made the call? Nick, Peter O'Sullivan or robbo?

I believe it was O'Sullivan but I have only read that from forums from supposedly better informed posters.
Yeah I've read on the chookpen a few time that O'Sullivan put all our eggs in the Hastings basket. The big problem I have with it is not extending him over an extra year, particularly in an era where contracts mean SFA in terms of clubs or players seeing them out.

We lot our football brains when Jimmy went, and Jake and Mitch showed that this season as we slid down the table.

I feel the same as you guys. But I'm happy for Jimmy and the Cronulla fans too. Jimmy deserves another comp, he's one of the true gentlemen in the game. The less said about the decision to not offer him an extra year (wtf is that ?? pathetic !! That's a Ron Jones era decision) the better.

Sorry couldn't help myself.

Yeah the second we lost RTS Jimmy should have been signed up for three years pronto. will be cheering him on this weekend! was there any truth to the fact that because we thought we had RTS in the bag we didn't bother offering Jimmy anything? then when RTS got 'home sick' it was all too late?

Yep this was a poor decision. You guys normally get it right but f**k me Hastings is a dud and never looked like anything else imo.

I came to this page because I thought you guys would be discussing this. Someone screwed-up real bad. I gather that you realise that the particular person will not only never be held to account, but will be defended for making the decision. What a cost.

Pearce has ridden on the coat-tails of Maloney's performances for years now. Without a quality partner to make good decisions, he has little but inconsistency to pull out of a tattered hat.

Throw the baby out with the bathwater and coddle the turkey. Maybe that's why Maloney didn't try harder to stay at the club. Pearce getting the kudos for years of Maloney's hard work.

Dunno where you got that from. It is well established Maloney was offered a 2 year contract extension by the Roosters, whilst the Sharks offered him a 3 year deal and it was that 1 extra year that saw him go to the Sharks. He said he wanted that security.

Also, RTS's signing was done very early in the year (April IIRC), whilst Maloney's by comparison was a lot later into the 2015 season (around August IIRC). Hence whoever told you this theory is talking guff as it does not add up.

As to RBM's claim, you only had to see Pearce's play this year to know his theory is just a load of garbage.

Based on what other people were saying about Nick Politis' hand in getting Jackson Hastings to the Roosters, it may well be Uncle Nick who had a hand in the decision as to the contract offered to James Maloney. IT is well know nothing happens at our club without his imprimatur.

This theory is reinforced by his public comments published in the Sydney Morning Herald today - http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...ers-supremo-nick-politis-20160926-grop4v.html

This is complete garbage.

The 3 years they were together Pearce was overall the better player, particularly in 2014 where Jimmy was a bit of a dud. In 2015 we win the comp if Pearce doesn't get injured, no doubt about it and TBH I think we are better off if Maloney is the one to get injured instead of Pearce. In 2013 Maloney was the better performer.

That's not to say I don't like Jimmy and value his input over those 3 years, I wish we kept him but we didn't. However, it seems that some people think our season wouldn't have been rubbish if Jimmy was there, maybe we win 1-2 more games in the first 8 but that is about it.

That's not to mention the fact that he went to a team primed to make a GF run, Cronulla have been a top 8 team for years with the exception of 2014 and we all know the circumstances there.

Sorry but Maloney was far more important to the team every year he was at the Roosters. He was the glue that kept everything together on and especially off the field.

Biggest mistake the club made in a long while and it was not Politis' mistake he was furious

Totally agree. Anyone who thinks Pearce is better than Maloney is either delusional or simply has no idea about how halves play. Maloney was so good, he even made Hastings look like a star when playing together last year when Pearce was injured. Maloney is a team player and makes those around him better. Pearce has never played for anyone but himself. I'm not saying Pearce is a bad player at all, he's just not a team player.

Yeah well maybe none of us feel like apologising for the club like you do all the time. You remind me of New Roosterman from the old Wall. Bring back the FOFF !!

LOL

That said Maloney is an out and out champion, a bloke who just wins shit. Letting him and RTS go in one offseason is one of the worst retention decisions of all time.

I've said it before, we lowballed them hard and no one on here will change my mind on that with flimsy mental gymnastics to get the club off on this f**kup

Yet if Pearce doesn't get injured last year we win the comp..

Don't get me wrong, i love Jimmy and he did a great job for us but we aren't world beaters this year with him there although the goal kicking issue was there.

He was the ying to pearce's yang, he offered a running option, a 2nd kicking option and speed at the edges where Pearce organised and ball played. It's early days but young watson looks to be a similar player to jimmy.

Pearce impressed me this year with the way he came back from being crucified by the media but on the field I think Maloney is the better player.

Hastings looked shaky this year it's true but you'd have to at least partly blame the pressure he was under so early in his career thanks to Pearce missing the start of the season, not to mention long stretches without JWH to play behind. Hastings doesn't look like a dud to me, he'll come good imo.

Absolutely agree re: Pearce's injury ....that's why they were such a great team together in the halves. Maloney led the team around leaving Pearce to concentrate on other things, and it worked a treat. Letting him go was a pitiful decision. Oh and don't forget Jarrod's injury too, I thought that totally killed us off.
