DRAGONS

Paul McGregor forced to reshuffle his pack of aces

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor rates Jack de Belin, Tyson Frizell and Tariq Sims as the best back row in the NRL but the loss of captain Gareth Widdop may restrict how long he can play the trio in their preferred positions in Saturday night’s semi-final against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

De Belin, Frizell and Sims were at their destructive best as the Dragons rediscovered the form which took them to the top of the Telstra Premiership until round 16 to stun Brisbane 48-18 on Sunday but they lost Widdop after the English five-eighth again dislocated his shoulder.

Kurt Mann will partner Ben Hunt in the halves against the Rabbitohs and while he did an impressive job deputising for Widdop during the three games he missed after initially injuring his shoulder against Parramatta, Mann’s promotion leaves McGregor with one less middle forward on the bench.

After losing NSW prop Paul Vaughan in round 21, Frizell has been playing longer minutes as a middle forward and he started in the front row against Wests Tigers and Canterbury, with Sims switching from the left edge to the right to accommodate Luciano Leilua.

A series of niggling injuries which left de Belin requiring painkilling needles for more than half the season also restricted the playing time for the NSW lock.

However, in the past two matches McGregor has started with Leeson Ah Mau in the front row so he could revert to the backrow combination which had been so effective for St George Illawarra, and Sims scored a first hat-trick in a devastating performance against the Broncos last Sunday.

“Mary is a coach who a lot of players love playing for and want to play for so if he says ‘jump’, we say ‘how high’, and he spoke to us about what was best for the team,” Sims said.

“We had a few personnel changes and what was needed for the team was for us to change those positions and fill that gap so we could get some blokes through whatever niggles they had to be able to get back to that original roster.”

The loss of Widdop, who is expected to undergo season-ending surgery, and an ankle injury sustained by de Belin in the round 25 win over Newcastle is likely to mean Frizell will again play a lengthy spell in the middle against Souths.

Leilua was one of four forwards named on the interchange, along with Jeremey Latimore, Blake Lawrie and Hame Sele but McGregor is likely to include Jason Nightingale (elbow) if he is fit as the veteran winger has spent time in the middle this season.

If not, McGregor would be expected to want some cover for an injury in the backline, particularly if he decides to start with Euan Aitken (hamstring) or Nightingale after lay-offs with injury.

De Belin and prop James Graham (concussion) also have to prove their fitness after failing to finish the match against the Broncos.

“The way that Blake Lawrie stepped up at Suncorp Stadium against a very fearsome Broncos pack, for a young bloke to know that we are down to one player on the bench and to perform the way that he did that gives him a lot of confidence.

“Blocker hasn’t played big minutes before in NRL so for him to come out and knock out close to 40 minutes and play the way he did, with no fear at all, as an older bloke in the team that really made me proud.”

Sims also praised Latimore, who played 46 minutes against Brisbane last Sunday, for his influence on the young forwards.

“He is a bit of a journeyman and statistics-wise he is not going to break any records but it is the things that man does for the team that aren’t recorded on the stats that impresses our team and our team-mates,” Sims said.

“In the 75th minute, they made a break and Jeremy Latimore was there and that shows what sort of attitude he has, and young blokes look up to that and see what is expected of a team-mate.”

Wing: Dragons should follow Storm blueprint to stop Rabbitohs

That's as good an opening weekend of finals as I can remember. We had a few surprises and a few clues as to how things might play out this weekend.

Did Melbourne show the Dragons how to handle the Rabbitohs?

Saturday's match between Souths and the Dragons is now shaping up as a classic. Last weekend the Storm showed a blueprint on how you can handle the Rabbitohs while the Dragons rekindled their attack.

Unfortunately the injury to Gareth Widdop will change things for the Dragons but they can still get some ideas from how the Storm won.

The problem trying to mark the Rabbitohs is you know the big forwards are going to come rumbling through the middle and you have to shut them down. But if you've compressed and they go wide you're vulnerable out there.

What I've noticed through the year is when the Rabbitohs get their shift on, most teams sit on their heels because no one wants to come out of the line and be the broken link in the chain. Invariably those guys like Cody Walker and Alex Johnston will dance across field and find a hard straight runner like John Sutton or Greg Inglis who's always going to have an advantage over someone that's flat-footed. Even if they don't go straight through, they get a quick play-the-ball, roll on and the Rabbitohs get the momentum.

Match Highlights: Storm v Rabbitohs - Finals Week 1, 2018

The Storm were brutal the way they defended South Sydney's pack and put a big target on Sam Burgess's head because he's South Sydney's inspiration in the middle. He still played well with lots of run metres and tackles but they certainly went after him and forced a few errors.

They also put a lot of pressure on Adam Reynolds as he kicked and we saw a lot of Rabbitohs players get up with a limp or carrying a knock which we didn't see as much with the Storm.

Not only did they bash the forwards, when the Rabbitohs did go to their shift plays to try and get out of trouble, the Storm didn't stand on their heels - they swarmed whoever had the ball. They kept coming forward which really hampered the South Sydney momentum and it was really effective.

From what we saw from the Dragons against Brisbane, their forwards have it in them to replicate that.

The bigger question for St George Illawarra is how they're going to score points. I know they racked up 48 against Brisbane but it will be a very different game taking on Souths with no Widdop. The Rabbitohs' defensive performance was actually pretty solid even though the Storm ended up scoring five tries.

The Dragons can take a lot from Tariq Sims scoring three tries through that left-edge channel.

If there's a side of the field that's more vulnerable defensively for the Rabbitohs it's that one. Adam Reynolds is a good defender and he puts his body on the line but sometimes the communication on that side is lacking - I've seen them get caught out a few times. Melbourne highlighted how you can attack the half channel on that side.

When Souths played the Broncos in round 23, and admittedly they had a different winger then in Richie Kennar, they were really vulnerable down that side and the Broncos kept going there. I'm sure Sims will be attacking that side. I don't see them rolling through the middle of the Rabbitohs. They're really going to have to try and get some value from the edges.

Good to see Saints have 4 forwards on bench

Like the inclusion of Sele

Can play the JDB role when his ankle goes

Happy to see Lomax has been retained

Will be needed as goal kicker

Hoping Aitken and Flo are cut from the 21, we need to play the best 17 available players if we are to beat Souths.

If we need a super sub, play Jai Field

I can see one of Field or Aitken coming in.

Field into the 17 at the expense of Sele.

Or Aitken into starting lineup with Lomax to the bench.

I’d be shocked if after a whole year of having a utility on the bench we go without this week.

If he drops Lomax we wont have a recognised kicker in the team and that wont happen in a semi where points may prove hard to come by..Lomax is a better kicker than Widdop which is crazy to think.
Aitken to the bench for certain - you couldnt drop no one from the team on the weekend...
Lafai can kick but surely he won't drop Lomax, the defence is just better with him there
Get their big forwards tired then set a flying Dufty loose off the inside ball from Hunt.
or a sneaky offload from Luciano..

Can’t wait for Sims to knock the ball out of Butterfingers Burgess hands a few times, his head will explode.

Did you see Sammy Burgess saying if Simms what to pick on his brothers . He will take him on in the car park.
Mate I showed Simms the artical today and his eyes started spinning.
This will be great.
Can not wait.
Jimmy is all good.
Jack will have till kick off.
So all good

bandages.

South are going with the 15 they went with last week.

Thats good.
Were going with the same 14, an angry boy scout and a medi-cab for JBD.

Lomax will start..... he’s our goal kicker.

I have a feeling their will be a lot of different things that we haven’t seen for a long time, give Luc a bit of space and watch those silky off loads , nothing like some confidence.

I know Aitken and Flo would love to be selected but I will be surprised if they are fit enough to be selected.

On form Lomax and Pereira deserve to be picked.

Lawrie and Luc are looking good.

Would have Sele on the bench. He is potentially just as good as Lawrie and Luc. Just needs consistent game time to make the grade. Has a good offload and will be raring to go to prove he is NRL standard.

I have a feeling we will hold them in the forwards.

Hunt and Mann will need to be at their best.

We have nothing to lose, and everything to game.

Fire up the boys Sir James !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely Zac keeps his spot.
Even if he struggles with Inglis & who hasn’t the experience will do him the world of good. They murdered our right side defence last time & since Zac has come in that side seems much more composed. Plus he’s our goal kicker

I think the run on side will remain as selected. Aitken was in poor form when he got injured so I don’t see him as an automatic call up especially as Lomax has shown he can handle the step up(& can kick goals).
A few things I would emphasise in the game plan:
Tariq to smash Reynolds(he’s held together by tattoos)
Good footwork will beat Sutton who is laterally very slow Hunt & Dufty should be looking to exploit this)
Kick for the sidelines to slow them down. Their backline shift is slick so minimise broken play opportunities as much as possible.
Go Saints.

PS. I love you.
