Dragons braced for Burgess bounce back

TOUGH NIGHT: A dejected Sam Burgess after the Rabbitohs' one-point loss to Melbourne last week. Picture: AAP

SOUTH Sydney endured a heartbreaking start to the finals and Dragons forward Tariq Sims is expecting to feel the full brunt of that frustration when his side face the Rabbitohs on Saturday – particularly that of star lock Sam Burgess.

Burgess had a mixed night in his side's one-point defeat to Melbourne on Friday night, a match where he was clearly in the sights of the Storm pack.

The barnstorming Englishman ran for 176 metres and made 38 tackles, but missed six tackles and made four crucial errors in the painfully narrow defeat.

The Storm also kept Burgess brothers Tom and George to under 100 running metres well below their usual output on a tough night up front.

In comparison, the recently maligned Dragons pack enjoyed an emphatic return to form against the Broncos.

It means they'll head into Saturday's clash high on confidence, but Sims said they'll need to find another gear against a fired-up Rabbitohs outfit.

“They’re proud Englishman and they’ve done a lot in the game,” Sims said of the Burgess brothers.

“Off the back of last week’s tough loss against Melbourne they’re definitely going to come out firing.

“All year the Rabbitohs have been setting a really nice platform for their outside backs and they’ve got a pretty handy centre out there in Greg Inglis and obviously Dan Gagai and [Alex] Johnston out the back there.

“It’s not only the Burgess boys, Damien Cook’s jumping out of that hooker role there and he’s fast as lightning so you’ve got to really be on your toes there.”

Can’t wait for Sims to knock the ball out of Butterfingers Burgess hands a few times, his head will explode.

The excitement is slowly building , as the game gets closer so will our chances of a win .
If the boys can recuperate from Sunday’s magnificent showing then they will put on a good show .

Russell Crowe had many good things to say about the Dragons ( in today’s Tele. ) about the history between the 2 clubs and also the ‘ blood and guts ‘ Jersey , a good read if you get the chance .

The big crowd will help us. Seems a few of the lads play their best footy on the big stage. I hope they get over 50,000 there.

Our last 2 wins were against packed hostile home crowds (Newy and Brisbane). We smashed the Roosters on Anzac Day and the Storm at a packed Kogarah, all huge occasions.

JDB, Friz, Tariq and Hunt will call on their Origin experience.

We’re underdogs again but we’re a big chance.
If we can put on another performance like last Sunday against the Broncos, we will most certainly beat Souths on Saturday. Souths have an extra day to prepare however, if the Dragons are on song there will be no stopping them.

Actually Poss think Souths have 2 xtra days mate.....which will be huge advantage in the context of things......I know Inglis and Reynolds had injury concerns but xtra days help enormously as you know....buggered if I know why the game wasnt scheduled for Sunday tbo....

The draw in the finals in now fixed, unlike 1 v 8 (lowest rank losers gone) system. Teams drawn together the following week should be playing on consecutive days at worst. Poor planning but it still goes back to a weak RLPA.

That is the 2 nd occasion that you have said that . I will not ask why , however it would appear that Ruldoph and young Donald have both rubbed you the wrong way at some stage . :triumph:

Was just debating with myself whether we shoukd go in with 4 forwards on the bench......especially against the big Souths pack.....didnt Mary have 4 forwards on the bench recently...cant remember what game it was now....then again if one of the backs get injured ...suppose he will go with Aitken in the final wash up....Mmmm its a crying shame Gareth is gone ...still it is what it is.....one thing at least we should get a great supporter base at the game.....if we can rise to the top at the cauldron with their large parochial crowd we can do it again in Sydney....c'mon fellas fire in the belly again this week

Would like to see Jai in. If one of our backs go, Mcinnis god forbid, dont even want to think about the number 7 spot actually. We are in strife. Mann to fill backs spot or back row. Whatever Manns on, its not enough.

De Belin bullish: Injury 'just a tweak'

St George Illawarra lock Jack de Belin is confident of playing in Saturday night's semi-final against South Sydney after revealing he had suffered a "scare" rather than a recurrence of the syndesmosis injury in his right ankle during Sunday's defeat of Brisbane.

While de Belin was named at lock, youngster Zac Lomax was kept in the No.3 jersey with centre Euan Aitken, returning from a hamstring injury, on the extended bench in jersey No.20.

De Belin is in a moon boot for the second successive week after lasting 52 minutes against the Broncos but has his sights set on playing in the ANZ Stadium clash with the aid of another pain-killing injection.

"It's just one of those things where I don't think it is going to be any good until the year is done," de Belin said on Tuesday.

"Luckily we are in the finals now and hopefully there is another three weeks to go and then I will have all the time in the world to get it sorted.

"For now, it's just a week to week thing and I am just worrying about getting it right for the weekend."

The NSW Origin forward, who said he had needed a needle to take the field in almost every game since round nine, suffered the injury in the round-25 win over Newcastle and did not train with the team before last Sunday's 48-18 elimination of Brisbane.

He had a fitness test before the captain's run at Suncorp Stadium last Saturday and a final decision was made on his fitness shortly before kick-off.

"To be honest, I wasn't too confident of playing at the start of the week but it was good to see the way it was recovering at a rapid pace and the performance staff and the physios were pretty positive as well," de Belin said.

"After the captain's run I knew it would be good enough to play."

While there was concern he had suffered a recurrence of the injury when he was forced to leave the field, de Belin said the move was more precautionary after a "mis-step".

"It was more a scare than anything," he said. "I just tweaked it and all the other muscles around it just seized up because they had over-compensated for the injury."

Lomax, who has only played three NRL games, was expected to be benched in favour of Aitken, who has scored 10 tries in his 23 appearances this year.

Teammates Matt Dufty and Nene Macdonald thought coach Paul McGregor would opt for Aitken's experience.

"Zac has proved he can play NRL the last couple of weeks. He's also proved what a classy goalkicker he is getting three from three and some from the sideline with 40,000 Broncos fans in his ears last weekend," Dufty said.

"It shows the resolve of the young kid. But Euan is a competitor and in a tight game, he can score tries. He's marked [Greg] Inglis before.

"It's a tough decision as Euan is coming back from injury but if it was me, I'd stick with Euan because he's played 23 games this year and he's been in Origin contention.

Zac is a player of the future with a long career in the NRL ahead of him."

Macdonald felt Aitken deserved the recall.

"It's going to be tough for 'Mary' [McGregor]. But I think Euan has earned his stripes. He's done all the work all year," he said.

"He deserves that position back. To turn him down would be very tough."
