Do the AFL own the land or just the stadium

They own the land and the stadium and the surrounding infrastructure on the total footprint. Which is around 70,000m2 in the Melbourne CBD.

Melbourne CBD development sites go for $16,000-$35,000 per m2.

It's worth $1.2B+ as an absolute minimum, that's just for the residual land value alone.

Thats just dumb.

Q "we have a great stadium just to the north in a fairly large population centre where we could base half of our games. why dont we think about that?"
A "Nah, we were part of a short merge 20 years ago with a team that is now dead. We hate them and we hate the merge, so we can never use that stadium"

Q "Hang on, dont we already play there like once a year in front of huge crowds?"
A "one is ok, More than that and the stadium is tainted"

Q "but if we are getting big crowds there, the fans obviously dont have a problem. who is it tainted for?"
A "Well, as you know, all $million businesses hold pointles grudges against no one in particular to their own detriment. That is business 101....."

I don't think you realise the hatred between Sea Eagles and Bears before, during and after the Northern eagles. Anyways I'll a answer your answers
1) Greg Florimo and the current bears entity would do anything in their power to make the whole central coast against this. Remember it was only about 10 years ago that the central coast bears had a real shot at coming into the NRL and the area feels dudded. Rightly or wrongly it will be looked at as northern eagles part 2

2) Manly also takes a game to Suncorp every year. This is simply revenue for Manly - I would also note we usually play larger drawing Sydney sides which helps with the crowds( nice week ender the central coast)

3) If we are talking about fans and location, Gosford is in the central coast and north of sydney. The name Northern Beaches was meant to capture and appeal to most of northern Sydney ( I would include central coast too). If we look at it this way Brookie is in a fairly central spot. Also geographically northern Sydney deserve a new stadium ( or refurbished Brooke to handle 20k) - probably one of the most populous area in Australia to not have it's own decent stadium.

Could Richardson be a possible successor to Greenberg? I was very impressed with his interview on NRL360 the other night.

(RL fan from the UK, now living in Melbourne so apologies if that's a dumb question)

Not a dumb question at all.
A big chance of it happening if he wants it. That’s the big question

Im hoping we don't loose any teams.

If Super League taught us anything its that fans will leave in droves if the structure is changed too much.

he was in the running when smith left but pulled out. I suspect due to being badly burnt by the commission on his future blueprint for the game.
At his age I doubt he wants the hassle.

I was thinking about this recently. Do you think fans would walk away as easily knowing that this was such a unique event, and out of their control? I don't think you would lose as many fans compared to the NRL making the call on whether a club continues or not.

So Andrew Johns wants 12 team comp ok so who do you think should be the clubs culled Andrew, I bet you don’t want to see the knight’s culled...

if the nrl plays this right it could actually mean more sustainability leading to more growth and no need to cull teams. Most club expenditure is discretionary in its amount ie the clubs decide what to spend and are not governed on how much they can spend. When you consider that players cost a club $10mill a year in salaries that means clubs are spending around $15-20million on other stuff. If the nrl imposes a strict $20million expenditure in all areas then clubs overnight become profit making. They are all in the same boat and we won’t see continued dominance of some clubs, the nrl doesn’t have to raise the club grant any further for the next decade meaning nrl is able to invest in growth and create more equity. Clubs have ever increasing equity meaning no bail outs needed in times of need. Clubs could submit proposals to the nrl for more expenditure that generates increased revenue such as fan engagement, game day activities etc. what it will do is stop the ridiculous spending on office staff and football depts that have put the clubs into this situation.

nrl could take over some key activities such as membership growth, NRLW and ticketing etc

Needs to be a changing of the guard for some of the club CEOs for these sorts of ideas to happen. Politis being the key amongst them.

And we are back to wondering if ever the ARLC can be reformed post-covid with clubland less interfering.

Maybe start with current club associations removed from QRL and NSWRL boards

And replace them with a NRL club delegate

Cronulla are set to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding with their major NRL sponsor likely to halt payments during the coronavirus crisis.
As the game continues to come to grips with the ramifications of a suspended season, the Sharks became the first club to temporarily lose their biggest backer.
Major sponsor Ace Gutters are in the final season of a two-year deal with the club, and have already transferred the first of four instalments in 2020.

However with the game put on hold, chief executive and long-time supporter Don Anderson told AAP that the money won't continue to flow.

"It won't this year because we're not playing," Anderson said.
"We're not getting the exposure. We've already paid part of one instalment for the amount of games we've had so far. Basically, that's how it works.

"There'll be no other money going to the Sharks until they start to play again."

Ace Gutters were among a number of major and minor sponsors contacted by AAP on Friday, with most ready to stand by the clubs during the pandemic.

It comes as the NRL's naming rights sponsor, Telstra, have begun discussions with sporting codes over the impact of the virus on their agreements.

Concerns sponsors will walk away from clubs
Prominent sports lawyer Tim Fuller from Gadens told AAP on Thursday that sponsors could leave the game in droves if no football was being played.

But motor company KIA (Brisbane) and private health insurers nib (Newcastle) were among a handful of major backers to throw their support behind their clubs.

Lending specialists RedZed, in the first of a two-year deal with Melbourne, said recent developments had only re-affirmed their commitment to the Storm.

"These are difficult times. We chose to be partnered with the Storm because of how they conduct themselves," managing director Evan Dwyer told AAP.
"And watching them conduct themselves through this difficult period that they've faced has made us even more committed to the relationship."

Anderson, whose company is believed to be tipping in $700,000 a year, said he was sympathetic of the struggles the NRL and the Sharks are facing.

And he insisted the organisation, which also sponsors junior clubs in the area, would be ready to contribute once the season resumes again.

"I think we've all got to understand that it's not the NRL's fault. It's something that's happened. I'm afraid we're all going to have live through it," he said.

"If it's cancelled altogether, there's nothing much I can do about it and we'll kick off the deal next year, won't we. We're virtually going to be a year out."

The golden years of Hollywood are over for the players
And so it should be.

Majority of them were grossly overpaid for years (not to mention the constant push for more money), and several of these players brought them game into disrepute with frequent off-field behavioral issues and incidents that smeared the game's image in the media, which in return cost the NRL and also their individual clubs millions of dollars in extra sponsorship money over the years. Serves them right.

People in media positions like Johns, Lockyer, Thurston, Cronk etc won't need to be worried financially if they get laid off, because they already made millions of dollars throughout their career, so they only have themselves to blame if they made bad financial decisions during their playing career and post-retirement.

How predictable, News Ltd journo discrediting the NRL digital arm which just happens to be in rivalry with Fox. The agenda is so obvious, Kent and Hooper keep bagging out the previous management, add in Richo and there we have it.

News want to own or kill off the digital arm, if they do, once again we are compromised.

The NRL are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Stay with Fox/nine on a lesser deal or go your own digital way. Do the the latter and Fox will go hard promoting AFL (like they’ve threatened in the past) and sabotage league at any opportunity. AFL never seem to get the same treatment probably because they have better/smarter administration
