Financial fragility of the game

big hit!

Precisely.

What business is it of Nine's how the NRL has managed its money? Presumably Nine is in a somewhat better position financially but that doesn't stop them trying to save money.

True leaders don't attack their business partners in the manner we've seen this week. They do it behind closed doors.

When they keep asking for loans. Your bank does it, your mum does it too.

Interesting comment on this podcast re future AFL TV rights. This is the way our game is headed also, hence all the posturing from the broadcasters at the moment.

It's a shame the so called unbiased media people in our game couldn't have a mature intelligent discussion on the benefits for RL going down this path, instead of all the personal attacks and hysteria eg. Kent, Hoops, Gould, Rothfield etc
Unless they all have agendas that are not in the interests of rugby league..........................................

It goes for a few minutes from 16min 55sec

Ever watch kids playing with cars and trucks...and the inevitable fuss that goes with all the children wanting that best shiny car, with the occasional wahhhh!!? That defines our media today.

I f*cking hope the VFL is dumb enough to do this....

"FTA is dead, everything will be subscriptions!!". Yeh, and they will be as popular as Soccer and RUnions.

NRL/VFL can tell FOX to get rooted without to much fuss, but the value of broad exposure in FTA tv is so important for these games

It's the future, that's why the NRL set up it's digital arm which is why Nine and Fox have been attacking the NRL saying they are wasting money. It's competition for them, they either want to control it or kill it make no mistake. All this posturing is to put pressure on the league. They haven't wasted or mismanaged the game it's just the narrative the media are crapping on about to put pressure on.

They have never been interested or worried how the league spends their money before. We have a strong asset that is a threat to them.

Rewind to about 1993 and think about Pay TV how nobody knew what influence it would have on the future of the game. Within a few years it was a major player.

Fast forward to 2020 and we are at a similar stage but this time with streaming etc and it's affect on traditional broadcasters.

For a reference just read about USA sports, because what happens there always ends up happening here.

We are in a good position and if V'landys F's it up he should be the one that goes.

Yeah. They've just taken out a big loan themselves. So maybe it wont be too much of a problem . Paying it back might be a bitch though, especially if they use all $600m
The $600 mill would be to cover themselves in a worst case scenario. So if they need all $600 mill, all sports will be pretty stuffed I would say, as I cannot see them needing it unless the whole year is wiped, and next year impacted as well.

Dont get me wrong, NRL Digital has huge potential and I hope we eventually move to this and aware from FOX.

But, FTA exposure is still super important to the NRL. The biggest PayTV match might get 350k viewer, half a shitty FTA broadcast. If we want NRL to become a niche sport for only the hardcore fans (like RU and Soccer in Aus), then take it off FTA.

FOX need to be scared of NRL Digital. 9 should be scared of 7 and 10....

Why do you think no one cares about NRL 9s or WC9s?

Its because it is locked away on PayTV, so they cant get a following. Same would happen to Indigenous All Stars, NRL and even Origin if we ever took it off FTA.

Seriously, put any of the 9s comps on FTA (a good couple of open rounds on Friday night, then wall-to-wall games on Saturday/Sunday) and RL9s would become huge in Australia.

Staggering the number of RL fans on social media who swallow the media beat up hook line and sinker and think the nrl has done a terrible job. When you point out to them that revenue has risen annually for 7 years, the game has invested massively in clubs, grassroots and revenue raising projects, and that the last two years has seen big surpluses the nrl has been able to put aside, they still would rather believe Gould!
Doesn’t help when your own chairman tells the world they’ve been sht at their jobs though! we live in an era of Trump where people have a strong opinion regardless of the actual facts or without taking the time to learn the reality or to explore the agendas behind the spin!

The anti siphoning law won't allow this to happen.

What excellent management and compassionate too.

Interesting listening to Jeff Kennett, president of Hawthorn, and his beefs with the AFL and funnily enough they are the same our clubs have with the NRL ie, a lack of transparency .

However the AFL don't have an aggressive media pushing an agenda against them.

You can hear him talking about it from 34 min

https://smartassam.podbean.com/e/episode-39-part-2-you-kennett-be-serious/

Also in the interview he talks about pokie revenue for his club. Again something the AFL cops very little heat about.

Compared to this attack on the NRL from media attack dogs

I could listen to that to become better informed.

But I get that gag reflex every time someone starts discussing AFL. Especially when the in laws bring it up (and that's regularly)

The state of Victoria should be renamed vomiteville

Serious question..

Has the NRL ever thought of hiring a PR company..

Just quietly they f**king suck at it..

The have somehow managed to become more hated than Covid 19 at the moment..

It is a f**king rare skill

When you have a hostile media and gobshite chairman, no PR company is going to save you!

The impression that I thought everyone had was that the digital arm was being invented, in part, to combat all that sh!t.

Oh no, did it not work ?
