Five NRL clubs fined for salary cap breaches

The National Rugby League has today outlined Salary Cap penalties against five clubs for breaches found in the 2009 club audits.

The clubs were advised of the breaches last week and the NRL Board was informed of the decisions at its meeting today.

“Given the major investigation at Melbourne this year it has taken a little longer than normal to complete the annual reviews at all clubs,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“It is encouraging that the largest of the fines for an undisclosed guarantee at Parramatta actually relates to the 2008 season and that for the most part in 2009 we are dealing with technical issues about the way payments should have been classified rather than deceptive conduct.

“The Salary Cap team is to be commended in terms of both these audits and the work undertaken in relation to the breaches found at the Melbourne Storm.

“Already they are focusing on the mid-year audits for the 2010 season.”

The following clubs will receive breach notices:
Club
Fine
Broncos
$17,045
Dragons
$22,500
Eels
$25,000
Raiders
$1,996
Roosters
$7,246

Haha the Eels roster is stronger than last year. And they shouldn't act like theyvwould know if anyone else was cheating the cap because they have no idea.

Generally I believe, in these instances, the fine is basically how much the club was over/undeclared or wrongly declared. These would all be second tier breaches, overlooked miscellaneous declarations and the like. Curious as to what an "undisclosed guarantee" is though....

The thing I find funny is the same clubs get fined for the same type of things usually involving the same players, year after year......but its not systematic.
