Seriously Gareth? there were no drugs? what years are you talking about, because I particularly remember in the early 60s when I was a kid, talking to numerous truckies who were loaded up on speed! Of course the only other drug was alcohol! And plenty of it!
A bit before then Sage , the 50’s and yes I realize that there was plenty of alcohol around - have you heard off ‘ the 6 o’clock swill ? ‘

I know that I would only have a few ales on a Saturday afternoon - family first and last . But no I had never heard of drugs back in the 50’s nor 60’s , only when those long hair hippies had a concert somewhere up there on the Central Coast - the flower people or something or rather . 🌻

A very sad reflection upon just how much society has changed over the years .

I recall the days when there was no drugs , we never heard of them . A man worked hard ( as do today’s bread winners ) during the week to earn a quid for his family and then have a few well deserved beers at the local - usually on a Saturday afternoon .

But the family was always taken care of first before he went out .
A very nostalgic look at things Gareth. My recollections were of some families that struggled with one wage after expenses like alcohol ,cigarettes & gambling were taken out.

No mate you're wrong? There was plenty of speed going around, especially amongst the truckies!

Unfortunately I have taken the thread of the subject that was originally being discussed, however in answer to your post Dennis we were just that type of family you refer to .

We struggled as did most families , house payments to the Rural Bank was the main bill that had to be paid plus everything else including T.V. licenses otherwise the kids had no tele to watch !

One wage , no much left after bills , there was no gambling , but I did manage a packet of tobacco for the week . Worked on a Saturday if available , if not then try to get work part time at Carlingford Co. Op .loading the steam train with fresh fruit picked from the many orchards in the area in those days .

Nostalgic yes , but we , as most people , did struggle as you have suggested .

All I can say is that we apparently moved in different circles Sage and I will need to take your word about truckers and drugs in the 50’s & 60’s .

One thing I do know is that other members would be getting rather annoyed that the thread has been taken off its original subject . So it would be best for each of us to keep his viewpoint to himself .

Mate, I ended up being one of those long-haired hippies that you have referenced, but before that, I can tell you, there were numerous truckies that I spoke to who were on speed, & absolutely off their faces!!

Sage you seem to have a fixation on truckers and drugs - you know that would make a tremendous book , a real money spinner .

O.K. so there were truckers on drugs back in the 60’s , I never knew this ,but as I said earlier apparently you knew these people , I didn’t . And my apologies if my reference to long hair hippies was taken the wrong way .

Dont worry Gareth about OT , as there is absolutely no news on this front! Agree that times were tough in the 60’s but home ownership was possible but high interest rates didn’t help. Most families knew the value of a dollar and TV ownership was considered a means to stay at home t be entertained. Those were the days of lamb cutlets every week and chicken on special occasions!

Back in my day, I had to use a dial up modem and wait 30 minutes to download a picture of Pamela Anderson in a bikini.

When you bought a lamb shoulder or leg the butcher used to ask if you wanted the shank for the dog lol.

Remember when the TV police used to come around to see if you had a TV licence?

When they were seen in our H C neighbourhood the kids would all cockatoo the news as they bolted for home and no one ever answered the inevitable knock on the door.
