Flanno plays it cool. Makes Hunt look like a fool.‘Strange and frustrating’: Dragons coach opens up on Ben Hunt’s sledge of his son
Shane Flanagan sat down with the Herald to answer the big questions about the club’s recruitment and retention – including the future of captain Ben Hunt.www.smh.com.au
Mad Article
All of OUR recruitment problems could go away if:All this could be solved by having a distinct trade period like the AFL do. It would stop all the BS rumours and the fans would know exactly whats on the table and what deals are getting done. Its something that we will never know really what is going on but it would give us the benefit and reassurance that the club is actually being proactive in the market, or not.
And used our billionaire owner’s network to offer significant third party deals and jobs post football. All of OUR recruitment problems could go away if:
a. We hired a new recruitment manager
b. We hired a professional CEO
c. If we replaced Haran, Millward, and Millard with a good GM football.
d. We gave the CEO final sign-off for salaries below 800k, provided it was within the salary cap.
He has a link to Ryles from when he was at the Storm. Hope he stays. If JAC isnt coming, I mean there are 2 vacant wing options there.. not sure why Sione would want to go tbh.. unless he has some fascination with Ryles.
Like signing Lawrie to a 3 year deal when everyone was wondering how the fxck he was able to make our top 30 squad season after season. He'd flat out struggle to dominate playing for Dapto. The main thing I want from Flannno in this period is sensible contracts. Look at the Tigers. A 4 year contract for Bateman at $800 with two more years to run!! He is 31 y.o., and he says he has no plans to go anywhere. Excruciating. How did that happen?
Remember how Flanno was tough with JDB. One year, not two. That is the kind of negotiation we need.

Dragon Dave, yes I should have been clearer, I knew it was before Flanno that Haran signed Lawrie to a 3 year deal.Hey maestro1.
Blake Lawrie signed the 3 year deal from 2024 to 2026 in January 2023, well before Flanno got the nod to head coach the Dragons in 2024. The General Manager of Football, Ben Haran in January 2023 welcomed the re-signing and said -
"Blake's a local junior who's been with us since 2012," Haran said.
"He's a great example of hard work and commitment. He really demonstrates what we want to see in a Dragon.
"We feel the next three years ahead of him will be his best years yet and we're excited to see where he'll go and where he can take the club."

The Dragons are pleased to announce the re-signing of front rower Blake Lawrie through to the end of the 2026 season.www.dragons.com.au
But if he can't be moved on, he has to be improved. I swear I would lock him in the gym to lift heavyvweights and do repeated sets of wind sprints until he could resist being bent back in contact and could do repeated carries. If you can't be skilled, at least get through a lot of work,It will be a good year if Lawrie doesn’t see first grade
We need a like-for-like replacement winger for Lomax. At this point in time the target is JAC. There is nothing wrong with having healthy competition for the other wing spot. The coach will pick the player he fells will be the better winger each week. He will also select the replacement for JAC when he becomes unavailable for a game.all rumours, but what do people think of Finau and Sloan on the wings?
-this would be a huge departure from bigger wingers with the power game.
personally I want Sloan at FB, but I’m seeing Flanno thinks he needs a year or two.
Tuipopotou did way better than I expected this year, and although he deserves the shot next year, I’m still not convinced his the best option. Lomax is gone, Rav is on the way out and regressed this year… Allen. Hasn’t played for ages, well that leaves Matt Fegai as my #1 winger at the moment, with Finau or tuipolotu the other choice.

Don't forget many posters in this place were well and truly all on board with Lawrie being signed up long term and touted him as our future 1st grade and club captain.Hey maestro1.

He has very limited leg extension and takes very small steps when he runs and that will never change. But if he can't be moved on, he has to be improved. I swear I would lock him in the gym to lift heavyvweights and do repeated sets of wind sprints until he could resist being bent back in contact and could do repeated carries. Good observation. Compare his running style to that of the Couchman lads.He has very limited leg extension and takes very small steps when he runs and that will never change.
He is top heavy and will always be easily bent backwards.
He couldn't even dominate a KOE Cup game pay him out and move him on.
Well that statement from Haran sure aged well didn't it? What a f#$king moron he is. Blake really demonstrates everything I don't want to see in a Dragon - slow, ineffective, a long term part of a pathetic losing culture and woefully out of his depth at NRL level.
I was pissed off when they resigned the useless log before a ball was kicked in 2023 and now we're stuck with him thanks to a braindead recruiting decision in the middle of the Griffinball era.
And before all the Blake lovers want to jump up and down and tell me he was supposedly our best player in 2023 - give yourselves an upper cut and ask yourself why all the other NRL clubs aren't falling over themselves to secure Blake's services.....
