Folau turns back on Eels to play rugby union

Good post Poupou.

It was a shit post.

A player on $500k with a 60% increase goes to $800k, leaving us with only $600k to play with.

A player on $350k goes to $560k, leaving us with $390k.

Both of these have been given the initial 60% increase because the higher up you are, the bigger increase you would get.

3 players going from $250k to $350k (Poupou's "backtracking/change after he's proved wrong" estimate) leaves us with $90k to be distributed between 20 players - $4500 each.

This would probably cover the rise in the minimum wage for those on the bottom - or maybe be less than that (if it went from $55k in 2010 to $60k in 2013), meaning it's bullshit.

So, basically, it's absolute crap. There is absolutely no way that $250k = either $350k (revised backtrack estimate), let alone $400k, unless the only players to get an actual raise were the top five at each club, with no one else getting any actual raise, and that's assuming there are only 5 who were on $250k+ contracts.

Idiots.

Yeah you're right. $250k is more like $400k.

Increases to the top handful of players will eat up the entire cap. There will be no increase in the minimum salary next year.

Thanks for sharing this dialogue.

You're just being a paranoid dick with that post.

Haha, how is that paranoid?

The numbers don't even come close to adding up.

That's because you're assuming everyone will get an increase.

The single top earner at most clubs will get half the cap increase. The rest of it will be chewed up by the next 4 or 5 highest earners.

You reckon there will be a rise in the minimum salary? I seriously doubt it. Not if the cap is rising by less than a million dollars. The top players, their managers and the NRL all want the game's highest earners on a million bucks a year.

Pro sports is a winner-takes-all market. The average league fan doesn't care if Zeb Taia goes to the Super League, but it is bad for the NRL's image if Jarryd Hayne goes to Japanese rugby. That's why Hayne gets the salary upgrade and Taia goes to France without fanfare.

What does all this mean for the probability of Taniela Lasalo switching to NZ Netball? I mean, he has a girl's name an all, and he rides a bike with a basket on the front handlebars....

Well, Poupou, one of the main changes that the Players Association is pushing for is a rise in the minimum wage. It will happen.

Yes, the top earners probably have to support it publically or they'd look like pricks to their teammates but it's still one of the main points on their agenda.

Which means that there's little, if any, left for the rest of the squad outside of the Top 5. This, quite simply, won't happen. Someone will pay player A $200k instead of $180k and player B $780k instead of $800k etc.

The average earners will get their raise, as well, although nowhere near the extent of the marquees.

It will happen, though, thus throwing the $250k = $400k right out the window.

It'll be more like $250k = $320k, which is just under 28%, as opposed to the salary cap raise of 22%.

I'm sure it will, but not this time around.

lol socialism. Won't happen (although I agree it should). The top earners are the ones who actually make the NRL money. Everyone knows it.

This is why the top earners and their management are already throwing around the grim spectre of Japanese rugby and any other of the NRL's competitors that offer big money. They must be furious the European economy has gone to shit - the Super League is now off the table except for average quality NRL players with Samoan/Tongan/etc passports (thanks to the Cotonou Agreement).

And really, those guys are replaceable. Hayne, Thurston, Marshall et al are not.

The average earners will get their raise, as well, although nowhere near the extent of the marquees.

$320k/$400k.. now you're splitting hairs. The fact is $250k is already a big earner and they will get a healthy increase. The guy on $70k will get nothing extra.
