Following Penrith has become a bit of a struggle

AS the thread title suggests..........following Penrith has become a bit of a struggle......but......we keep hanging in there don't we? Why? Cause we love our team.

We can't help it.

I'm just going to keep on enjoying my footy week in week out....win or lose........just as I did right through the late eighties, the nineties, the wooden spoon in 2001, the trophy win in 2003........and yes......the wooden spoon again in 2007.

I will give them every bit of passion I can muster, and if ever comes the day when they (god forbid) should be merged or removed from the NRL, then I shall find myself another sport to occupy my life, or more than likely, choose no sport at all.

But until then........I'm caught.......hook, line and sinker.

Get off the pipe brother, actually stay on it if you are going to support penrith long term.

Its very sad that my partners 9 year old wonders why i follow the panthers i tell him that they are the team in my heart and im passionate about them.
He has tried several times to look up to me and to the Penrith Team but week in and week out its a loss to many times and a win not enough and he doesnt have the patience as a 9 year old doesnt to stick with the hard times so hopefully it doesnt mean a gap of another 12 years in between to gain another title.
He tries to wear his jumper in pride but alas cannot as all 9 year olds want to win which is torment to his little soul for he wishes to have a team that tries with enthusiasm and courage and to try and win games just like he is taught as a 9 year old footballer...
Maybe penrith has lost the fun in this dreary world of business politics and perhaps the team should be dragged along to many jnr games to watch the fun ,passion and courage of these kids trying hard to play a sport they love and enjoy for it may bring back memories to a time where these guys where not all glitz and glamour and they where not worried about paychecks and rep jumpers for those things to most 9 year olds are worlds away and in another time but they will be happy to play for the fun and mateship that is earned as a young rugby league player.....
Before my rant goes on to long is there anyone else that agrees that our team has lost the fun and passion and courage to play for the mighty black panthers and business is slowing draining the essence from our team......I do...:(

I am sure that next year with all the juniors coming through that we can be the force that we were in 2003 and 2004.
Bring on the better days!

It's not always about winning.

I can remember turning on 2KA listening to Frank Ley call Penrith games in the 70's knowing full well that we were going to get beaten by 30+ (under the 3 point try and 5m rule, which equates to 60+).

Although the scoreboard shows that we were comprehensively beaten by the Dragons. The game still could have gone either way until about the 65 minute mark.

I still enjoy watching the MIGHTY PENNY PANTHERS go around week in, week out.

Supporting the Panthers, you know that there is going to be a heavy theme of mediocrity, with the occasional glimpses of good times.

I yearn for the day that we are a force (or thereabouts) for a 5+ season period, like the Eels, Knights, Broncos, etc., rather than just rise up for 1-2 seasons, and then slip back down again.

I can only dream.

But I still love my Panthers no matter what.

Slightly off topic, perhaps, this is a chant that The Den in Bay 7 has, and the last line I think sums it up...

We are the 'army, the Panthers army
We are westies, and we are proud
We're always drinking, we're always singing
I am Penrith 'til I die!

I feel supporting Penrith is usually frustrating especially the last 3 seasons because you expect alot. When before you didn't really expect anything other then 100% effort. I feel the team lacks the same spark and passion to succeed that it once did.

I think it's clear we lack the passion week in week out by being able to beat The Bulldogs twice,North Queensland,Manly and Brisbane. Yet we play teams like the dragons and the Roosters at home and lose.

I feel that is the most frustrating thing about supporting Penrith we are clearly good enough. But we never produce it consistently enough.Or maybe we just think we will roll teams like the dragons and Roosters etc without putting in the same effort as we do against the top sides.

Also another frustrating thing especially about this season is we are officially the dumbest team in the competition. We concede penalties all the time when we have the opposition under pressure we give away a dumb penalty they kick the ball 30 metres up field and instead of them being under pressure to put in a good kick on the last. We are allowing them to attack us for an extra 5 tackles.

I will always support Penrith because i always have done and always will do. But they are incredibly frustrating to watch at times. Also the management of the club in recent times until this season has to come into some question. With the complete lack of player retention.

2008 will surely be better.

It cannot be any worse than the last three seasons.

Hopefully Petero will be like what Steve Price has been to the Warriors. The Warriors have still battled a bit in his 3 years there but they were abysmal in 2004 before he came, (they finished equal last with Souths winning only 6 games all year) he provided leadership. We are sorely lacking in the leadership department due to the below par form of the players that should be leading us.

Its a struggle following Penrith, especially because early this season they raised false hope with those wins over the Bulldogs and Broncos. I'm quite frankly shocked they've lost as much as they've had because you know they have the potential to do alot better, but something's been very wrong about the club this year and that's why some big changes are happening. I just want to support a team that plays with passion and 100% effort, I'm sad to say I don't feel that has been there enough this season and that's hard to take as a fan.

I think that the expectation of a side to win week to week makes us feel down when they lose so much. I think the internet and forums add to the disappointment and frustration. I too watched a lot of games as a kid at Penrith Park where they lost. Even traditionally we don't win a lot of games (40% or less). With 40 years tradition now at the club, I'd like the club to think about a motto or just something to get some pride into playing for the Panthers. Then maybe our disappointment will go away?
