Must admit I'm still concerned about Horan in the GM role that Griffin now reports into.

Wasn't Ben Horan in the recruitment/pathways before? How does that make him eligible for the GM role?

Very impressed with these assistant appointments.

Elliott is a really good game analyst, he will he able to break down every game before and after.
Gentle has proven he can handle the big stage and has done wondwrs to keep Brisbane from imploding on themselves. That was a tough gig.

The Acadamy idea is also fantastic. This should have been in place years ago as many orher clubs have.

I have a real positivity about 2021, and these appointments will also act as a magnet for players.

Not sure about Haran being the GM as I feel, in some part, he was party to what had previously gone on.
Millward survives for now, but I have a feeling his days will he numbered if he cant deliver the 'goods', hiwever, I'm sure Griffin will be all over recruitement moving forward.

Overall, very positive and considering both Gentle and Elliott are 'old boys', they have served their time elsewhere and would hardly recognise the club from their times as players.

Good to have people from different systems coming in. Elliot appears to have a good ability to breakdown, analyse and highlight what teams are doing and hopefully can help our team discover some new attacking strategies and improve our defensive deficiencies.
Milward lucky to stay when all around him were let go. Hopefully Hook has the say in recruitment though.
Do we consider Millward's new title indicates a downgrade & less power ?

Elliott is bad, like really bad. Bomb and hope is all he had for us
I think he is a perfect assistant coach, not head coach. People over estimate their power, it’s still the Head Coach pulling the strings. Elliot reinvented himself since retiring from Coaching and may offer some nice strategies that compliment Griffin disciplined approach. Gentle should add a nice balance to the communication dynamics. Feels better than the McGregor structure, particularly in light of the age and the developmental needs of our squad.

That’s why he got an assistants job
great game analyst and technical understanding of breaking down opposition Which we’ve lacked for 9 years
I get his not a great man manager or motivator but he and Gentle will be perfect fit for our club as assisting a guy that can coach plus
They are ex players which is mandatory .. or so it has been that way last 9 yrs

Ben was only involved in junior development and acted as a talent scout for some time
Has had various roles in the club from that to managing the team
he has not been the problem

Millward will have to do his role with a coach that will have more of a heavy input and final say and will be recommending who to fire snd chase...... Not the other way round just like our previous weak coach that accepted a role where he let others do all the hard work and put recommendations on a platter for him and then use that as an excuse... see...not my fault!

All because to assist him on focussing on coaching mainly.
He could not do that either

Anthony Griffin will have plenty of experience by his side at St George Illawarra next year after the club announced Matthew Elliott and Peter Gentle would be joining the coaching staff as assistants.

The Dragons have finalised their new football department structure with Gentle, who served as interim Broncos coach in the closing rounds of this season, and Elliott, a former Raiders, Panthers and Warriors mentor, the key additions.

Gentle has more than 15 years of experience having previously acted as head coach of Hull FC (2012-13) as well as an assistant at the Sharks, Wests Tigers, Parramatta Eels and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Elliott has 16 seasons of head coaching experience alone having last coached the Warriors in 2014 after stints at the Bradford Bulls, Canberra and Penrith.

It is a homecoming of sorts for each new assistant - Elliott and Gentle played first grade for St George prior to the merger with the Steelers in 1999.

Tony Guilfoyle will join the Dragons as physical performance manager having previously filled similar roles at the Panthers and Broncos.

Dan Lawson moves into the medical performance manager role with Elliot Jackson and Cody Parsons also new additions to the club in strength and conditioning and sports science respectively. Physiotherapist Davis Theobald will remain at the club.

Mat Head and Shaun Timmins will oversee the junior representative pathways and recruitment following the introduction of the Dragons Academy. Head and Timmins will also act as pathways coach and pathways performance manager respectively. Ian Millward remains at the club under a new title, NRL recruitment manager.

Ben Haran has formally stepped into the role as general manager of football and will oversee the impending structural and personnel changes.

Paul McGregor resigned as Dragons coach late in the season before Dean Young filled the role in an interim capacity before opting to link with North Queensland as an assistant next year after Griffin won the race for the head coach's role.

Former NRL coach Elliott joins Dragons

Former NRL coach Matt Elliott will be one of Anthony Griffin's assistants at the Dragons.
Former NRL mentor Matt Elliott will add some extra experience to St George Illawarra, signing as an assistant to incoming Dragons coach Anthony Griffin.

The Dragons announced on Monday that Elliott and Brisbane interim coach Peter Gentle would assist Griffin at the club in 2021.

It's a homecoming for Elliott after he made his first-grade debut for the Dragons back in 1989, going on to play 61 games.

He then went on to become head coach at the Bradford Bulls followed by stints in the NRL with Canberra, Penrith and the Warriors, where he finished up in 2014.

A long-time assistant Gentle also played three games over two seasons for St George back in 1987-88.

Ian Millward remains at the club under a new title, NRL recruitment manager.

Ben Haran has formally stepped into the role as general manager of football and will oversee the impending structural and personnel changes.

Paul McGregor resigned as Dragons coach midway through 2020 with Griffin preferred over acting coach Dean Young, who will now shift to North Queensland as an assistant.

Although capping the season with a win over an under-strength Storm, the Dragons finished a disappointing 12th on the ladder.

The St George Illawarra Dragons have finalised a new football department structure and announced several personnel appointments ahead of the 2021 NRL Telstra Premiership season.

Joining Anthony Griffin on the Dragons' new-look coaching staff are assistant coaches Peter Gentle and Matthew Elliott.

Current interim Brisbane Broncos coach Peter Gentle joins the club with over 15 years of first grade coaching experience having previously acted as head coach of Hull FC (2012-13) as well as an assistant at the Sharks, Wests Tigers, Parramatta Eels and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Elliott has 16 seasons of head coaching experience alone having last coached the New Zealand Warriors in 2014. His 18 months at the Warriors followed long stints at the Bradford Bulls, Canberra Raiders and Penrith Panthers.

A homecoming of sorts for each new assistant, both Elliott and Gentle previously played first grade for Dragons founding club St George.

"Change was inevitable for our football department heading into the 2021 season following the appointment of Anthony Griffin," General Manager of football Ben Haran said.

"We are pleased with the personnel that will join the Dragons in preparation for our 2021 campaign, and how they will connect under the new structure we have put in place.

"Our junior pathways system will see the introduction of the Dragons Academy which is not only crucial for next year but for many years to come.

I like the proposed introduction of the Dragons Academy for the years ahead. This will lead to our juniors in the Illawarra/Kogarah areas being well and truly looked after. We needed this and thank goodness management have given this the green light.

I wouldn't pay attention to what a penriff fan says.
Why did the one on the forum from penriff join this month.
Jump on the bandwagon.
I have better things to do with my time than go on other teams forum pages.

Like many have stated, these are quality appointments.

Elliots analytical ability will be an asset to Griffin and the fact he realises this is a positive imo.

Gentle I don't know too much about but if Griffin has worked with him previously then he knows what he's getting.

Massive improvement on what we've had previously in all 3 cases.

More to look forward too...
