It's not bad enough that he's consistently our worst player, but he's actually the captain. Who's idea was that btw? I have a feeling it was B Smith when he ironically suggested Bedsy hit the road because he thought he was going to hold the club back...
How many coaching changes has he survived? Ryan, Hagan, Smith, Stone, Bennett...unbelievable.
It's funny because the whole club lost their minds over the kid as he was growing up, even though they knew exactly what he was. The whole club/town said that he wasn't as talented as his brother but he was such a bloody hard worker. Then they said he'd end up better than Matt, which is sort of a contradiction.
But like you said, as the fans clicked that he wasn't a superstar, a succession of coaches have failed to see it. Bennett is the latest. Wayne has sacked about 15 players since he arrived 2 years ago so he has had plenty of opportunity to do it. The thing about Wayne is that he has never been in this position before. He has always been able to implement his winning culture onto talented teams and take them to the top. Newcastle don't have the talent in house, he hasn't bought any match winners, and it is looking like they won't be able to turn Bennett's cultural shift into a trophy for that reason.
Gidley is exactly the type of player Wayne wants in his club, he is just used to having more talented versions. Soward is more talented than Gids. Wayne got his head right and they won a comp. Gids already has a good attitude, he just doesn't have the ability to win a comp.
