Rod Maybon, 34, who played 156 first grade games during the 1980's and 1990's, came off life support on Monday and has returned to his eastern suburbs home.
A former representative fullback, Maybon did not wish to speak publicly about the incident.
Maybon was in a fight in Darlinghurst Rd when struck over the head with a bottle on Sunday.
Police said he was taken to St Vincent's hospital with a substantial head wound - a severed artery - at 6am.
"I heard he was out in the Cross with a couple of mates and a fight happened" said George Pggins, Maybon's former coach at South Sydney.
"It was pretty savage."
