Mental illness is not just something that happens in psychiatric hospitals, it's experienced by men no matter what background, income level or age.

The single biggest killer of men under 45 is suicide. In 2014, 4623 took their own life in Australia. That's 12 men every day, 1 man every two hours! 41% of men who contemplated suicide felt they could not talk about their feelings.

Only 20% of people know that suicide is the most likely cause of death for men under 45.

It's in our community and is correlated with domestic violence.

I'll rather trust the recent University of Bristol research results which suggests otherwise!

To suggest that depression in men is the major cause of violence against women is simplistic, there are many causes of domestic violence. One of these causes is most definitely depression but there are evolutionary, psychological, social, and societal issues that are all causes of violence. So no, treating male depression will not prevent violence against women.

If you want research https://www.nap.edu/read/5127/chapter/5#59 is an excellent paper on domestic violence.
I can also provide other papers if you wish.

I would suggest that most people who are taking about depression in here haven't suffered it. It's not a long, drawn out sad feeling as some have hinted at. Depression is feeling worthless. It's hating yourself, it's being unable to even conceive of positivity. It's not being able to face getting out of bed in the morning. It's thinking you don't deserve to live, and that others would be better off without you around making their lives miserable. Its living in a world where everything feels constantly grey. Its not being able to function on a normal level for no apparent reason. It's sobbing hysterically in the shower because you feel you have absolutely no control over your life.

The misconception that it has anything to do with feeling sad is a huge part of the problem. Sadness and depression are worlds apart.

Most people have felt sad or depressed at times. Feeling depressed can be a normal reaction to loss, life's struggles, or an injured self-esteem.

But when feelings of intense sadness -- including feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless -- last for many days to weeks and keep you from functioning normally, your depression may be something more than sadness. It may very well be clinical depression -- a treatable medical condition.

According to the DSM-5, a manual used to diagnose mental disorders, depression occurs when you have at least five of the following symptoms for at least two weeks:

  • A depressed mood during most of the day, particularly in the morning
  • Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day
  • Impaired concentration, indecisiveness
  • Insomnia (an inability to sleep) or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day
  • Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide (not just fearing death)
  • A sense of restlessness or being slowed down
  • Significant weight loss or weight gain

"Crazy" people in general can be violent - nothing new here.
It's a bit rough associating this bloke with wife bashing here at this time.

No way Vader has said that anywhere or anything like it. He made a stupid comment regarding the family not looking hard enough but there is nothing about wife bashing. So sorry - that is basically an error on your part.

Vader has also made some extremely valid posts in this thread as have many others. There is some real insight here. Very sad thread.

Thats an unbelievable statistic. Unacceptable.

It is. There is a definite correlation - stress, depression, V, DV. We need to get a better understanding of this society we are living in.

For those who are frustrated by certain posters in this thread, click the name, hit ignore. It will enhance your enjoyment of these forums, I guarantee. The more that do it, the less reaction they get, and the sooner they fade off in to the sunset

He pointed out a correlation between mental illness and DV in a thread about an ex-player disappearing - what am I supposed to think?

He has made some valid post in this thread, the problem is there were some extremely disgusting post mixed in with the good. The posts he made about Robinson's family, the posts about another poster's son etc. So it's understandable people are not happy and not giving him the benefit of the doubt when he raises domestic violence in this thread, he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt and he brought that on himself with his behaviour in this thread.
