Im stunned and humbled by the responses here. Youve made me laugh and cry as I read through your posts and I thank you for taking the time to acknowledge and remember, for some of you a stranger, for others an acquaintance and for a few of you a friend. Thank you.
I said earlier that I had written a little tribute here it is
I would like to share a post that I wrote about Matt last year after the Grand Final win in which Matt played his last forums 7 match, a post I wrote before I even knew that Matt was so seriously ill although Matt did have an operation.

Well I have noticed that one of our greatest performers this year didn't actually receive a Team Award.
I am talking about the Backpacker. I have a sneaky feeling that BP may have played just about every game.....
I reckon BP deserves the Luke Phillips Award (I know he's retired - see the similarity) for being gutsy and the toughest player on the field, a player who plays with injuries, skill, courage and commitment.....and always pulls of those last minute ditch efforts to help win the tight matches.
Phillips has retired but will never been forgotten as one of the Roosters best....just like you.

I would like to say that you are the one that pulled everyone together...you have played through adversity and shown tremendous courage....in my opinion you were the greatest attribute to our team all season and you will be sorely missed by your friends. You were the one here week in week out encouraging everyone and keeping smiles on our faces..even when you were probably finding it hard to put a smile on your own face....you are my great friend. The Team will definately not be the same without you.
Cheers Buddy!!! I know its not a certificate but its what I think of you.
If anyone is capable of doing the BP a certificate that would be great...or if you would just like to add your own personal comments here for our retiring hero....please do.

Matt only told me what was wrong with him about a month or so before he lost his fight and naturally I was devastated. Matt was a person that over the past year I had grown to love and admire and bearing in mind never actually met. Matt was my pm buddy, my confidant and a father figure to me.
I know that Matt loved this website but he was upset with the behaviour of some and the lack of sportsmanship shown recently in the 7’s. I urge everyone to remember when talking and dealing with others - that these people are real.
I would like to leave my tribute by saying that this place won’t ever be the same without the Backpacker and my heart goes out to Matt’s family as they have lost a brilliant man that had it all love, compassion, strength and humour to name but a few.
Matt my friend Rest in Peace…I’ll miss you and love you and hope that you can catch up with my Dad up there in heaven and get to a few Roosters matches along the way. XXXX
