My sympathy goes out to you Morticia. I lost my Dad in May and the hurt is overpowering so I know what you're going through. We'll try that much harder to win the 7's for your Dad.

I met BP on the wall, when I was single handedly stalking would be forum 7's participants. I lied, connived and told him that he would be 3rd reserve and that he would only have to post occasionally. As it turned out that occasionally was every two weeks.

It goes without saying that without BP in the 7's last year we would never have won. He was the backbone of the team and covered for me when I got ill. "Too much information", was often icq'd or emailed back to me when I would discuss my illness with him, but he always put one of his famous emoticons with it.

As Ozzie said, it feels like we have lost a brother, we've certainly lost a friend. The thing I loved most about him was his sarcastic sense of humour. His ability to understand what it was you were saying, his wisdom, honesty and integrity. All of that will be missed. Matt was the type of person who made you want to strive for something better, and I am truly sorry, that I didn't get the chance to tell him what a difference he made in my life.

Mistakenly, we believe that the internet is safe, from emotions, from attachments, that it is merely chat on the internet and means nothing. Those of us who got to know him, would all agree that he certainly made an impact.

Tish, tea and sympathy ain't your go, so all we can offer you is support. Kryst, he was a funny bugger, and my fondest memory of him would be him on the internet with those bloody bags of ice and chickweed !!

Morticia, I'm very sad to hear about your loss...he was a great friend to me and my condolences go to You and your family.

He was a very good friend to me and made me and others laugh a lot, and I loved the jokes between him and Oz.

I don't have a fav memory of him....because they were all good. It will be a bit more quiet without him here.

We will miss you BP

I'm very sorry to hear, Morticia. I'd come to know him as a trusted acquaintance, one that I'd hoped would become a great friendship like I know he had with others here.

I first ran into him early this year when I was occasionally trolling in the roosters forum. We started chatting in various threads in the forum, and through discussions with him, I quickly amended my trolling ways. When roosterboy was starting up the Lions 7's team, BP was quick to drop him my name.

BP, you'll be sadly missed.

My families deepest condolences Morticia. Although I didn't know your dad, I do know your pain. I've seen plenty of him around the forum and am now sorry I didn't make a better effort to know him.

Peace be with you at this difficult time.

Morticia,

I did not know your father in person, but I certainly wished I had. He was a great man and an ambassador for Forum Sevens and i'd imagine in life, that only some of us can hope to live up to.

His love for forum sevens and his never baised and caring views on every topic made him a very likeable person, not only on the forums, but also in life.

I wish I could say something to pass the hurting of your fathers death, but I can't. A man such as this is irreplaceable, and upon hearing the news, I was terribly shocked. I never knew he was fighting such a good fight, never let on, and that's the man i'd imagine he was.

He was an inspiration to me in sevens. He led from the forefront and had such dedication that I could only dream to have. Your father was a legend and I wish to pass onto you my deepest condolensces to you and your family in this terrible time.

God Bless.

Oh, God, I'm so sorry to hear about this.

Deepest condolences for your loss. I never really knew him, but from what others have said in his honour, it's clear he was a great person. His encouragement when I first started Sevens was appreciated greatly, and like many others on here, I was inspired by his dedication. He will be sorely missed.

Was absolutely shocked to read this, and I can't even begin to imagine how you feel. My best wishes in this trying time.

Just coming over to say I'm thinking of you at this sad and difficult time.

Obviously being over here in England I only really knew of him over the net and I only really spoke to Backpacker in forum 7's but it was enough for me to learn what a top bloke he was. I remember Easts were always and still remain my favourite team to play because of him (amongst other members of the side) and it was the games I looked forward to most. He was one of the people I really, really respected in this comp and I mean it. Whether it be in victory or defeat, he was always sporting and had a witty remark or a kind comment to offer others. The manner in which he conducted himself and the respect he commanded was amazing and something which the younger users such as myself am sure looked up to. He's one of the reasons we have this game now and his influence was so great.

These aren't cliches and empty words, I mean the lot of them. And although they may not mean a lot or soothe the pain for you, Morticia, I just wanted to tell you how highly I thought of him from afar. I may not have met him but he was without a doubt one of my favourite posters and an absolute legend.

You and your family are in my prayers.

I was just getting to know Backpacker when he took ill. He PM’d me with an old F7’s posting and we had a discussion about F7’s in general. He was so passionate about F7’s and I had just finished my first trial match when we had the discussion. His passion rubbed off on me immediately, you could see the fire for F7’s in his PM’s. His words inspired me, and they still do. I kept every PM he sent me.

We spoke a few weeks later about an article I had written and how it had hit home with him. I’m glad that, even for one moment, I could return the favour.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Morticia on your loss. On our loss.

I send my condolences too, to Matt and his family, friends and relatives. I only knew of him through the Forum 7's and was purely shocked when I heard the news.

I've typed and re-typed a response to Smurfs perfect summary of her Dad over and over and over for the past 24 hours but can't seem to get my post right.

I like everyone else here only met Matt through the Forums 7's....but, Matt had a huge influence in my life over that period. We started out as team mates but soon become the best of friends writing to each other daily and sometimes all day over the past 12 months or so...I have written a proper tribute to Matt which I intend to post in the near future but for now all I can manage is that I miss Matt terribly and I have 3 regrets..the first being that our friendship wasn't long enough....2nd that I never actually got to the Airport that morning Matt was in Sydney however brief, and 3rd that I accidently deleted the last message Matt ever sent me.

Smurf it was my pleasure to be your Dads friend.

All my love to you Smurf and the family....who Matt adored.

Morticia, my thoughts are with you and your family.

My memories of Backpacker are only very short. I came across his words first in the Roosters section of this forum. I read a lot and a lot of what Backpacker wrote always brought a smile to my face. I found his words to be good natured and filled with lots of humour –they may well have been full of sarcasm but his sarcasm always came off as humorous to me. I may very well be wrong in that assumption but that is how I read him and preferred to read him. From those words I gained a lot of respect for him. There are very few people who have the ability to do this through words and it becomes quite a remarkable achievement for someone who I have known via this forum for a short time to do so.

My respect for him grew even more with not only the knowledge but seeing how much work he put into the forum 7’s – he will be greatly missed.

Be very proud as it seems your father has touched quite a lot of people in many ways whether that be just by reading, chatting, bantering, debating or face to face contact.

PK, I agree with you there 100 percent....at times he was serious....but most of the time he was a funny guy, who loved (it seemed) to have a good time.

I'd just like to give my thoughts and prayers to Morticia and everyone close to him, especially the Roosters forum sevens team. Whenever Willow and I had our run ins alot of the time BackPacker was always there to settle me down, tell me there's no point in fighting with him. He was kind of like a Second Uncle giving me advice to make me a better Captain. I'm going to miss the bloke, He was the anchor of the Forum Sevens Competition, Helped it get to where it is now and he will be surely missed by all involved in forum sevens. Morticia, you are such a brave lady on how you are taking this, My feeling are with you and I'm sure everyone involved in forum sevens are too.

God Bless.

I did not know The Backpacker very well but I have become great friends with Morticia over the past 6-7 months. During this time she confided in me about her dad & how she was managing. She held her family together when times were the toughest & stood like a rock as her world came crashing down.

I have never met Morticia (bit hard when she lives OS) but if I did I would be honoured & awestruck. She is a brave & classy lady.

Vale Backpacker.
