The official name of the competition is SUPER LEAGUE.

As Flamin' says above the company name is Super League (Europe) Ltd., it was registered at the same time time as the Aussie Super League, hence the brackets.

Engage are the sponsor and thus the name Engage Super League is regularly used, similar to the Telstra Premiership. However this is not a lifetime thing, sponsors change and the competition used to be called Tetley Super League.

With the company name being having "Europe" in the title but in brackets, as well as there being Paris, Catalans and now Crusaders in the competition some fans have called it Super League Europe - probably to make the competition sound bigger than it is, to make it into the supra-national top-fight competition for the whole continent, or in some cases to differentiate between the 1997 Aussie SL. However it is never officially been called Super League Europe or SLE.

With the Engage name (Engage Mutual are an insurance firm btw) it was regularly shortened to ESL which meant that it is sometimes called, again mistakenly, European Super League by fans.

The competition is not called the English Super League, it never has been and it never will be. It is the name still used by stupid moronic Australian journalists. It was first coined during the Super League war in Australia, even though there was a Paris team I think the name was first used before teams were decided, so journalists presumed it would just be an English competition.

It astounds me though that a rugby league forum, with actual league fans, has called this forum the English Super League.

I've always called it the European SL and with three european countries involved it is a fitting name.
It's about as fitting as if you renamed the NRL as IRL - 'International Rugby League', since technically there is more than one nation involved. The comp has never been known as European SL and if you call it that then that's a mistake on your part.

I've already said 'English Super League' is not the best name. But at least that way people know what the forum is supposed to be about. As I said, if anyone can think of any other names that won't lead to confusion, then feel free to suggest them.

13, just to repeat, this forum was called European for some time (by me ftr). But people asked for it to be changed to English. I understand it was because we already had a UK forum and a French forum.

At the end of the day we do our best to be governed by the requests of the forum contributors.

Moronic Aust journos may indeed be moronic, but that has nothing to do with this forum.

I'm fully aware of the history of it. Nevertheless, it's up to you guys to debate and decide on the name of this forum. But for some reason it seems to attract debate regardless of any decision made.

Personally I support the European SL, and that's why it is named that in LU's League Network.

Perhaps it should be put to a vote.

In the interim, I'm happy to make it 'Super League' as per Adamkungl's suggestion - assuming we have that hard fought notion of consensus.

What does everyone else say?

Drop the English bit as that is offensive. I was born in the UK but I'm not "English" and hate it when one eyed Aussie's say I am.

Of course, that would be the view of a Welsh boyo.
Ignorant. Don't they teach geography in any Sydney school? The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the country, not 'England' because some slack lazy Aussie journos can't be bothered to change a bad habit.

Maybe we should call Australia, 'Queensland'?

I'm happy to call it 'Super League' or 'UK rugby league', as it used to be. Not European though. As I've stated, that's neither correct nor accurate.
