His father was against him playing NRL, Nathan wanted to play NRL. They were in disagreement. I assume by the fact that he is in the team that Gus disagreed with Cleary senior and hence he is no longer the coach.
Tom.
You're talking about a kid who still lives at home. If his dad advised against staying at the panthers b/c it was too early to debut I'm willing to bet he'd follow his dads advice.
Is there anything other an speculation to back up this theory on why Cleary was sacked?
"But as the talented halfback admits, he most likely wouldn't have been afforded the opportunity to play NRL at such a young age had his father remained at the club as coach.
Ivan was controversially told during the off-season that his services at Penrith were no longer required, casting a shadow over the future of his son, who was off contract at the end of 2016.
But within a month of Ivan's departure, Nathan signed a two-year extension in November and added another year to that deal this month to ensure he will remain at Penrith until at least the end of the 2019 season."

The fact that Cleary snr wasn't ready to pick Cleary jnr in the NRL is well known. If that is the reason for him being sacked is speculation. But it sounds as good as any other theory that I've heard.
