So Freddy is our consultant now. Yep let’s get rid of Widdop because he is leaving at the end of the year. God I don’t know why Melbourne didn’t get rid of Slater to allow a smooth transition for his replacement and the Roosters need to obviously move Cronk on as he is retiring at the end of the season.
So if we follow the argument, Norman is a better 5/8 than Widdop and it is better that Dufty is in the team rather than Widdop? Oh and Hunt and Norman need extra time to form a relationship. McGregor is screwing our team enough without jumping to the tune of any statement made by a media commentator who is only really concerned about the Roosters, NSW and ratings.

Exactly..straight away in his press confernce he had to point out we only have 29 in our squad and it is Ian's job to find replacement 30th man and also find out what is happening re replacing JDB with the NRL which is leaving us at 28.
Funny thing is Manly know how how much they have to spend now cause of Dylan Walker stood down. It is $87,000 or $97,000 extra.
Why are St George appearing to take so long to find out or approach the NRL where we stand? According to Mary no one had done anything yet. Do they not keep him in the loop.
You can see Mary is just frustrated with his team and the journo's lead him up the garden path to excuseland.
I've always thought that this factional deal to have a separate Director of Pathways/recruitment/retention or whatever Millward's job title is would end up this way. Just another opportunity for Mary or the coach at the time to deflect responsibility/blame.

A better system would be is for Millward to report to Mary and any decisions be co-signed by our CEO who unlike Doust is football literate. The main reason for this is that:

  • SGI would lose no capability under this structure.
  • There are 3 people who are involved in the decision and who would take responsibility for decisions.
  • There would no longer be a blame game being played when things run off the rails.

Not sure if it's been mentioned... but Freddy is another old mate of McGregor's, and so will go to great lengths to avoid criticising him. Happy to lay blame at the apppointed patsy though.

Widdop has put his body on the line for our club for years. He has battled on despite not having a halves partner at times and despite the lack of game plan as directed by the coach. What has McGregor done? He can't even pick the best players.

We do have a Millward Mess when it comes to our backline players. A slow, clunky backline which is out of balance salary cap wise, needs to be addressed.

I'd say Freddy is right not because Widdop is not a good player, but because by recruiting Norman too much of our cap is directed to 3 players; Hunt, Norman and Widdop.

As Widdop has already decided to leave at the end of 2019 (most probably wanted to leave prior to the start of 2019) and because we have signed reggies level wingers to replace top first grade wingers. This and the fact that Aitken is the weakest link in our backline and that there is still a question mark over Dufty's defence and confidence under the high ball, it is easy to see we have a MESS.

To me the most logical way to address this problem is to let Widdop go and prepare for his stint in the ESL. He is showing little or no interest in playing for SGI in the fullback position and is performing poorly because of his attitude or maybe the fact that his shoulder is not completely recovered.

With the funds from Widdop's salary, maybe Millward and Mary can address the mess that our backline finds itself in.

It will only be when SGI put winning as the top priority that our Club will progress and operate to it's best possible performances on and off the field.
