Rich backer ditches union for Catalans

One of the richest men in France has turned his attention to rugby league by announcing an historic sponsorship deal with Catalans Dragons, report League Express.

Mohed Altrad, the owner of the global construction group Altrad, has entered into an official partnership with the Dragons, bringing a major blue-chip sponsor into Super League and boosting the profile of the game in France. According to League Express, Altrad is a major supporter of rugby union and his decision to invest in the Dragons follows on from the recent acquisition of another sponsor from the 15-aside code, Bpifrance, who recently ditched Perpignan’s union side to support the Dragons.

The best outcome would be these companies trying to make the Dragons famous so the Dragons can in turn make the companies famous (more famous)

If it just stops at “hand over money, print name on jumper”, then its no different to getting a sprinkler company...

Trent, you trained the Catalan Dragons, you imagine that it was you who wanted to go to France before going to England?

Yes I liked to train the Catalan Dragons and when the opportunity to spend in France came, I did not hesitate. We should have gone to England but I wanted to come here to enjoy Paris and also to teach players a page of Australian history because the Australians came to fight for France during the First World War. And then to go to France also allowed us to train with Toulouse.

If it is obvious that it is a benefit for the TO to train with the Roosters, is it true in the opposite direction to prepare Wigan?
Sylvain is a friend and we watched the videos of Wigan together to prepare his team to train with us. We had a good session and Toulouse has very good players. Rugby league in France is not yet very developed but there is quality and we could enjoy.

Do you have recent news from Scott Dureau because the last ones we had were very sad?
Yes I am in contact with him, he is doing his chemotherapy to fight against cancer and he keeps hope, he even continues to train with Newcastle.

We hear that Sonny Bill could return to XIII after the World Cup?
Only he knows the decision he will make and I know him well and I know that the only thing he has in mind right now is this World Cup. There is no discussion with him at the moment but if he wanted to come back he would be welcomed.

Wish we played a trial against Toulouse (unfortunately their season has started so not really on the cards)

Not only because it's a huge opportunity for them but to get some proper game time in for Easts before playing Wigan

First, do you enjoy your stay in Paris, to prepare for the match against Wigan?
It's great, we did a little tourism, today it was really good to play against Toulouse, it was a good little training, the preparation is going well and everyone appreciates his stay here in Paris .

Is the weather better here than in the North of England?
Yes, the sun has done us good, but it's been cold in recent days. We adapt and prepare for the cold of Manchester.

About training with Toulouse, the interest is obvious for the Toulouse but for you?
They are very good, I know some people in the staff of Toulouse, and some players too, it was very nice to play against them. It's a very good team and it's been a good test for us. We obviously work our attack and I think it was a very good workout for us today.

And now the match, the world club championship, and then the season ...
It's going to be our first game together with the 2019 squad, so it'll be a big big test against Wigan this Sunday, we're all looking forward to it. After that the season will be launched, we are very excited.

You hope to win a new title, as always?
Yes obviously, I think that if we can win this week, it will be a very good start for us. Obviously we had a very good year last year winning the competition, we hope to do the same this season.

A word about Trent Robinson, do you know he's a bit of Toulouse?
Yes, it's very strange to hear him speak French, of course he has French family and he loves Paris, that's why we are here, it was very good for our preparation and we all enjoy being here.

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson feels as though France are under appreciated in rugby league.

Robinson began his professional coaching career in Super League with French outfit Catalans Dragons in 2011 and spent two seasons at the club, winning 59% of his games in charge.

The 41-year-old has been at the Roosters since 2013, winning two NRL Premierships and a World Club Challenge with the Australian side.

Sydney have spent time training with Championship outfit Toulouse Olympique ahead of their World Club Challenge clash against Wigan Warriors on Sunday.

“[Back home] we keep our eyes sort of closed in on Australia and New Zealand,” Robinson told NRL.com.

“I love rugby league and I love rugby league in France.

“They don’t get the credibility they deserve, so I wanted to highlight that. That was one of the reasons [why we came to France].

“They’re good quality players, they’re a good quality country and they love their rugby league.”

The Roosters face the Warriors in the 2019 World Club Challenge at the DW Stadium on Sunday, 7pm kick-off.

New club
Sharks-Montpellier-Rugby-League.png

A new club is emerging from the Montpellier side, Sharks Montpellier Rugby League, which aims to professionalize in the coming seasons.

Julien Lasserre, former player, is at the origin of this ambitious project in Montpellier and he was joined in this adventure by Samuel Soulier who will be the general secretary. It is he who tells us a little more about the contours of this new club:

Julien Lasserre is carrying this project and I joined him 6 months ago, I am a former XV player. I'm from the region but I rather bathed in the XV and it's Julien who made me discover the XIII. The structure was created, we unveiled our logo and Instagram and Facebook accounts . As for the installations used, we are still discussing with the town hall for the moment.

The club wants ambitious from its creation and intends to give the means:

We want to start directly in Elite 1, we contacted the federation to know the conditions to be fulfilled. We have to have a junior team and the right budget so we're working on that. The federation sees a good eye Elite 1 club in a big city like Montpellier if we meet the conditions. If we see in the longer term, we would like to 5 years tend towards a professional club.

The social aspect is finally very important:

To talk about the XIII maximum in the region and especially to give young people the chance to discover this sport, we will relocate training in sensitive neighborhoods. It's really important for us to get the club into the city life. We also want to create a handi rugby team as soon as possible.

Is that even possible? Wouldn’t they have to start off in elite2?

Maybe they are looking at the big picture ie. playing in the English structure.

Toulouse’s long-standing ambition to become a Super League club has been hit by the opposition of local residents – that have put a stop on their new stadium development.

Their traditional home at Stade des Minimes, a local authority owned stadia as is common in France, was meant to be re-developed in to a top flight standard ground, and demolition work had commenced back in December 2017.

But objections from taxpayers over the cost of the project, increased road traffic, disruption on matchday and a lack of sufficient parking for supporters has resulted in the project being mothballed.

That has forced Toulouse to play their home games out of town at Blagnac RUFC, with their game against Toronto Wolfpack now due to be played at Stade Ernest Wallon, home of Toulouse rugby union.

GettyImages-1052680520.jpg

The plan had been to raise the stadium capacity at Minimes to 10,000, to include the extention of two main stands, a shop, a gym and an administrative office for the club, at the cost of around €8m.

The renovation was already under way when the local residents committee took legal action against the council, causing work to be suspended last year, even after it had been agreed that the capacity of the ground after development would be reduced to around 4,500.

Toulouse were mentioned in the original set up of Super League in 1996, but were never chosen. They lost out to Catalans Dragons for a place in 2006, and then after three years in the Championship from 2009 to 2011, they failed to achieve the on-field criteria that would have enabled them to apply for a place in the top flight.

They missed out on The Qualifiers in 2017, but came the closest they’ve ever been to Super League last season, as they just missed out on a place in the Million Pound Game.

With French rugby league enjoying a boost following Catalans’ Challenge Cup win, the club remains determined to reach the top flight.

Whereas many French communities have suffered from economic decline over recent years, Toulouse is a growing and prosperous city.Between 2006 and 2015 the city’s population went up from under 440,000 to over 470,000 people. The aeronautical industry and the health and tech sectors attract workers from all over Europe.Young people from the South West of France flock to the city for educational and professional opportunities.

Toulouse Olympique play their part in the economic success of Toulouse; their business club, La Table Ovale, has more than 500 members and is considered to be the place to network in the city.

With a good local pool of talented players to develop and a strong business community behind the club, the only ingredient missing to confirm Toulouse’s status as a potential Super League club is a stadium to match their ambitions.

Blagnac RUFC are keen to explore the long-term possibility to hosting Toulouse, with local residents and businesses happy that rugby league activity is a positive boost to the town.

Club president Benoit Trey says they are actively working on a project to further improve facilities at the Stade Ernest Argeles, to enable it to become Toulouse’s long-term home.

The pitch copped for some criticism from Widnes coach Kieron Purtill following the Vikings’ win in France recently, and Blagnac and the local council are working on a plan to seek funding to enable a hybrid pitch to be laid.

There is already an outline plan for improved supporter and corporate hospitality facilities at Blagnac, in line with the rugby union club’s development as a centre for rugby excellence, while their ladies XV play in the French first division and provide players for the international side.

Blagnac’s stadium benefits from a large carpark and there are direct bus and tram services to central Toulouse and easy access to the Airport which is in Blagnac.

The city of Toulouse may well see the option of investing in ground improvements at Stade Ernest Argèles as a rapid and cost effective way of providing a permanent home for Toulouse Olympique.

The question remains over the suitability of Blagnac as a possible Super League venue, which may result in the use of Stade Ernest Wallon to be explored.

The 19,000-capacity stadium will host Toulouse’s game against Toronto Wolfpack in March, the first time that Olympique have played at the ground, though it has previously hosted Catalans Dragons and international matches.

It is understood that Blagnac did pass a Super League inspection ahead of possible promotion at the end of 2018, but the continuing changes and plans to improve standards in the top flight may impact on that.

One option could be to play bigger games at the Stade Ernest Wallon and play the majority of home games at Blagnac – but the biggest challenge for Toulouse remains getting out of the Championship.

The club was approached for comment, but would only say that: “Toulouse City Council is considering all the options to find the best solution for the Toulouse Olympique, including if promoted to Super League.”https://www.loverugbyleague.com/pos...ue-ambitions-hit-by-stadium-project-collapse/

Catalans have announced a dual-registration agreement with Toulouse for the 2019 season. This agreement will see the Dragons make players available to play for the Championship club. Catalans youngster Arthur Romano will become the first player to play for Toulouse via dual-registration this weekend.

https://www.loverugbyleague.com/post/catalans-and-toulouse-enter-dual-registration-agreement/
Makes you wonder why this hasn’t happened long before but better late than never.

Romano seems to have been around for ages only to have played 2 games for the dragons but is only 21.

GIGOT DENIES NRL MOVE Before North Queensland snared the services of Jordan Kahu to replace the sacked Ben Barba, there was speculation Catalans star Tony Gigot was in the sights of the club. There had been talk the 28-year-old was unhappy at the Dragons after new signing Sam Tomkins ousted him from the fullback position, but Gigot quashed the rumours. “I can’t control what stories are going around. All I can do is say I am really happy here at the moment,” Gigot told League Express. “It always happens when you’re at this stage of a contract. “Coming towards the end of a deal, that is. All I can say is that I am fully focused on this season with the Dragons, and trying my best to help us win some more trophies.”

The international calendar of Blues takes shape for the year 2019 which promises to be well supplied.

The Midi Olympique tells us that the FFR XIII, through its steering committee, finalizes the organization of a Test Match at home against Scotland or Ireland that would take place in the spring. The other two meetings, also in France, against Papua New Guinea by David Mead are confirmed. Good news !
