Friend could make return against Cowboys

Experienced Warriors hooker Nathan Friend has an outside chance of making his NRL return for the Easter Monday clash with North Queensland in Auckland.

The workaholic Friend has missed the Warriors' 0-3 start to the season after having shoulder surgery to repair nerve damage.

Coach Matthew Elliott says Friend should definitely be back in the next two weeks, but also has his fingers crossed that the 152-game veteran might be right to face the Cowboys.

''I hope so,'' Elliott said.

''I don't want to put any pressure on him by coming out and saying, yes, he's definitely a chance. What we'll do is see how he goes in his contact work this week.''

Friend is part of a crowded casualty ward at the Warriors, with the number of first-grade squad members unavailable in double figures.

Among them are winger Manu Vatuvei (ankle), prop Russell Packer (arm) and centre Jerome Ropati (knee).

Vatuvei could be back next week, Packer is still three to four weeks from returning, while Ropati's first NRL appearance since last May could come in a fortnight.

In Friend's absence, back-rower Elijah Taylor has stepped into the No.9 jersey to operate with halves Shaun Johnson and Thomas Leuluai.

Elliott said he had massive faith in Taylor's ability. But he also said it was always going to be tough to adapt to a new system, new position and new halves combination, and Friend's return would ease the situation.

Elliott also cited confidence as a key issue for the Warriors, who sit bottom of the table.

''At the moment, we're making an error and everyone gets conservative straight away,'' he said.

''So the amount of ball movement, for example, that we're getting in attack is nowhere near what we prepared to do, so we get more conservative.''

The result was more errors and Elliott said the message to the players was to try to avoid tightening up, adding: ''This is more about mind-set.''

Hope we don't rush him while he's not fully healed. We would be further up sh*t creek with him out for potentially the season.

I'd be dropping Henry for Friend.

If Friend is ready of course

Friend might be short of match fitness, so may need Godinet on the bench. But once he's up to speed, he's an 80 minute player. I would suggest, given the lack of creativity that we are demonstrating at the moment, we should be seeing Leuleuai's game time reducing.

But Leuluai can tackle and I thought that was your major requirement from a 6.

My two worries would be either coming back too soon only to loose him for a long timr or others in the team taking the old "Freinds back he can do the tackling now and she'll be right" attitude and slack off even more.

We had two seasons with a 6 that can't tackle, and everyone's still pining for that guy. The main problem I had with Maloney was not that he couldn't tackle, but that he couldn't do most of the other things that halves are supposed to do.

Godinet is a defensive liability and, with Johnson on the other side, that is a concern. It would be wonderful to have a solid defensive half that could also create and organize on attack etc, but I would rather have a half that can competently do the latter and not the former than the former and not the latter. You can hide a weak defender. Our halves' inability to construct attacking plays is a BIG problem.

I rate Godinet/Mara over Friend.

few years ago, maybe. He wont suddenly become the Warriors savior..

Whether he saves us or not Friend is far and away the best option at hooker. When he was playing for us last year he was immense, if fit he is an automatic selection.

I like his attitude, I think we have younger guys who could easily match him physically.

He should be the captain.

You just can't understate how important good service out of dummy half is. Players get confidence to run onto the ball, halves have more confidence and time. I reckon this is half the teams problem.

The warriors don't have good service (mind you Talor has improved) but they just don't have the confidence. Mara has never, ever had that crisp service, and not sure he can read a game. Thats why Elliot hasn't picked him. If I were Mara I'd be looking to go to England.

What is that based on? In his handful of games Mara has done at least an adequate job if not a very good one. He is so far ahead of Taylor at hooker its not funny, there is no way Elliott can justify that.

Mara missed the last trial, so I suspect he was heading into the season with injury, and, he's out injured again.

Theres an article I read on Mara, maybe the NZ Herald a few weeks back where he said he missed out a bit due to injury during the trials, and was told what he needed to do to break into the top side.
I hope he does is it and they still have room for Friend and Godinet I think all three have a lot to offer.
I still wonder why in the last few seasons we have so many out from injury before the season starts
