Fullback in 2009

In the Big League there is an article at the back about each clubs rookies that have debut in 1st grade being Daine Laurie, Tim Moltzen, Beau Ryan & Peni Tagive..... the following is what Tim Sheens said about our crop:

"They've all handled themselves well. Young Peni was injured and might have featured a bit more had that not happened. We are grooming Timmy for fullback with a view of continuing that next year but he also has utility value. Daine has hit the scene quickly and has a lot of raw talent. He's a classic example of a boy from the bush who could have been here earlier."

So it seems Moltzen will be our fullback next year.

These sort of comments have to be taken with a grain of salt. I am sure things change all the time, it was not that long ago that another U/20's player was told by Sheens himself that he was being groomed to replace Hodgo next year...

I'd hope Shannon Gallant would feature for 09, but it doesn't appear that way. I think he's a real goer

There's another article in this weeks big league about Moltzen replacing Hodgo next season, looks like a done deal.

There's also a lovely article about John Morris being a PE teacher.

not much mention of what he serves up on the field though, not surprisingly.

They should atleast try Lawrence at fullback. At least try him there for a couple of weeks. Lawrence told me he doesn't think he is fit enought to play fullback but I can't see how that could be true. He would be great returning the ball and he would be a great support player.

so a player who believes he couldn't play fullback due to his fitness should play at fullback, because you think his fitness, which you can only guess at, is better than he believes, which he is going to know more about than anyone else.

good work clown.

Lazarus sh*ts all over Moltzen for natural fullback ability. It is why he was identified as such and Moltzen was an afterthought from Lazzo's injury (after trying other options)

I am betting Blake will be screwed on this one

I just meant I was surprised to hear him say that. He looks pretty fit to me. I thought they would atleast try him there for 1 game. Even a trial :?

Why you're laughing at my post is trivial when you were the one who made the dopey comment to begin with.

If you meant to say that, why didn't you?

Why did you instead imply that Lawrence was lying to you about his fitness, or that you knew his fitness better than he does.

you putz. im not the only one that thinks lawrence should be given a testrun at fullback. maybe he will surprise himself. its a bit hard to know if he will be good there or not if he hasnt played 1 first grade game there. maybe if he wasnt fit enough there in the past, maybe he is now or will be in the future

At halftime Hodgson said he hopes Beau Ryan gets the gig, whilst Shannon Gallant put his hand up today. It's gotta be down to those 2 now.

Going by todays form he is very worthy of being given a chance. He did a lot today , but the stand out was the way he put his body on the line when attacking the ball. If his defence is as commited he has a good future.

Well one thinks we may see a few fullbacks play for the Tigers next year - because there are quite a few players that are hungry for it!

I personally think it is going to be out of Lazarus and Gallant. The thing Lazarus has going for him (when he gets some footy under his belt) is his kicking game. He has a good kicker of the footy and that is something that Sheens will see as very valuable. Time will only tell though...

Gallant was classy today.
