Sloan will never make
It's so this.. everyone makes mistakes, but we have burned nearly 4yrs with Sloan & Dufty at the back.. they generally cost us atleast 6-10 points per game.. and no NRL team (let alone hunt's dragons) can make up for those leaked points... can you imagine how many close games turn into wins with a class fullback? and what every extra win does for confidence and hence future wins? And what that extra success does for our recruitment prospects?

Every week those 2 players went into video sessions and must have been torn a new one... and every week they got re-selected anyway.. its not about execution.. its simply effort and bravery.. put your body on the line.. finally we have a coach coming who won't put up with that.. but 4 freaking years.. and at this stage the start of a 5th.

Obviously other players have had there issues too (the odd winger comes to mind), but fullback imo is more crucial than any other, there is atleast 2 try saving opportunities in a game.. sometimes more.. not even counting catching a difficult bomb versus spilling it in your 20m zone.. plus a fullback chiming into the attacking line to create an extra body... is really one of the few times we look dangerous in attack...... basically you cant blood players in 1st grade... even if you could somehow coach selflessness & courage into a player... they have to do it in reserve grade.

No to lomax, he'd do a job but he's primarily a right side player.

I'd take Tuaupiki for sure but his size might be an issue same as dufty.

Was the flanno and suaalii meeting just a rumour? He has been good even if it's just a 1 year deal at fb it gives us time to recruit in other positions.
Suaalii might be the right person at the right price to get us those wins that have eluded us. He is a talent and would be a good fit at fullback for a year to give us some hope for the future. But this to me is just a fanciful wish and far from reality even though the Roosters could do with some cash to help their salary cap.

LIke Manu, I don't think the Roosters would let him go as he is a great back up until he leaves to play under Eddie Jones' Wallabies.

Sloan has a lot of short comings in defence! but NRL tell me why this is not grounding! I can at least see one finger on the ball.View attachment 78578

My Saturday arvo abc replay lenses, looks like he’s got more fingers on it than he has on his hands!

We are looking for fingers slightly out of shape by pressure on the ball.

Warren Boland and Reg would be outraged.

That became clear to me during his stint in NSW Cup, where his defence was identical to 1st grade.. and his attack although occasionally brilliant, was the same scattergun kick-happy random when he felt like it stuff..

But what I mean.. is he is free to do that in NSW Cup.. but he (and Amone, and Dufty) cant be learning the basics in 1st grade.. the very very occasional player can skip reserve grade.. these guys were not them. Play a month in NSW Cup against men.. if you are deadset braining it.. ok sure we can talk.

Of course this is partly to do with the weakness in our 1st grade roster.. but its also on our coaches who allow "not 1st grade standard" effort to become acceptable. And its not easy when fans are pumping you to play their favourite juniors.. but thats the gig.. you have to stick to your principles as a coach, not buckle to us fans.

As for the Sloan error.. I mean hopefully he wont do that again, but the ref bum-steered him also.. its literally impossible for Sloan not to have grounded that ball when touching it from above.. regardless of whether he 'intended' to ground it or push it dead.

The refs seem to analyse everything we do now, we didnt get a lot of respect in years gone by, but now we are spoon contendors... we are getting absolutely nothing... we get pinged for everything.. and the ref+bunker are looking for ways that such an injustice (like us scoring a try or saving one) can be overturned.. similarly with foul play.. when the tackler hip drops on BMM's legs or Lomax gets a knee to the head.. etc etc.. nothing happens.. but any thought of our guys stepping out of line is dealt with a penalty > sinbin and usually a suspension too.

We’ve got the spoon covered.

The hip drop is such a weak and cowardly tackle. I’d be deducting a competition point for it. Its purpose is to maim and injure, not to stop momentum.

Sloan can be so exciting but like a number on the forum here is fading overall.

Please no Zac Lomax to fullback as he simply is too slow for that position and not a great tackler when the attacker has space. His feeble attempted tackle on the weekend to let in Warriors 2nd try was terrible. No I’m not ranting on Zac, just stating what is obvious. Zac I still believe could be a good backrower as he doesnt mind a carry in traffic. Such a shame that Cody has been hit by this dreadful health problem which it appears may end his career in NRL. Such a talent.

Hoping Flannogan can jarg a few top line players who want to be in the relative quiet and beauty of the gong.

From the NRL 2023 rulebook:

Picking up in in-goal 3. (a) Picking up the ball is not grounding it

He was trying to pick it up, the ref got it right I'm afraid. Terrible error by Sloan, and, while I've been one of his biggest fans and fiercest defenders, in this game I just about lost patience with him. He failed to get himself into the game in any meaningful way in attack - we needed some impact of speed and dynamism but he was just MIA. The team looked after him in defence too! They worked their arses off and spared him having to attempt try saving tackles. Then after it all, after all that defensive work, with the game in the balance and another set withstood - instead of kicking or grounding the ball to give us a shot at a short restart, he lazily attempts a casual pick-up and hands the Warriors the match. Blake Lawrie deserves a sainthood for not killing him on the spot.

At the end of the day Sloan gave the ref every opportunity to look at it, simply kick the ball out with the greatest of ease, why even attempt to touch it. He was trying to pick it up and for what reason, only he knows. As for being gun shy you just have to look at the first try the Warriors scored, that my friends is GUN SHY. If you want to see what gun shy isnt, have a look at video of the greatest fullback IMO ever. Mr Clive Churchill, never mind about who or size a great technique and totally fearless, you just have to look at the famous statue to note the difference in size between him and Provan. BTW when Provan says he has the greatest respect for Clive Churchill you know he's earnt it, and he may have been even smaller than Sloan.
