"Futurama" cast holding out for more pay

Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:08pm EDT

By Nellie Andreeva
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - When the "Futurama" characters come back for new episodes on Comedy Central in mid-2010, they may sound different.

That is because producing studio 20th TV is auditioning new actors for the roles after failing to reach an agreement with the original voice cast: John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal.
"We love the 'Futurama' voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands," the studio said in a statement Friday. "While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on."

Back in June when 20th TV and Comedy Central announced a deal to produce 26 new episodes of "Futurama," the producers noted that no deals with the show's original voice cast had been closed but expressed confidence that all of them would return.

When, under similar circumstances another canceled Fox/20th TV animated series, "Family Guy," was resurrected with a pickup of new episodes by Adult Swim in 2005, the show's entire voice cast came back for what is described as approximately the same salaries they were paid when "Guy" aired on Fox from 1999-2002.

The cast of "Futurama," which ran on Fox from 1999-2002, are said to have been offered modest pay increases but have insisted for bumps of several times what they used to make.

However, on "Family Guy," creator Seth MacFarlane voices the key characters, while the entire cast of "Futurama," like that of "The Simpsons," consists of outside actors.

Matt Groening, who co-created "Futurama" with David X. Cohen, knows a thing or two about voice casts standoffs.

The "Simpsons" creator had gone through a series of bruising renegotiations with the actors on the long-running Fox series.

Just like the current scuttle on "Futurama," in 1998 20th TV hired casting directors to recast the actors on "The Simpsons." A deal was ultimately reached.

In 2004 and 2008, the series' seasons were cut short after the "Simpsons" voice cast boycotted table reads as part of the tense salary negotiations.
Despite the salary disputes, "Simpsons" reached the 20-season mark with its original voice cast intact.

With "Futurama," there also is a possibility that the two sides would come to an agreement.

In the meanwhile, it's going to be rough for the casting directors assigned to find replacement actors who have already started to receive threats from fans of the show.

The topic of the actors' recasting is expected to be addressed during the "Futurama" panel 20th TV will hold during the upcoming Comic-Con gathering in San Diego, which will include Groening and Cohen.

Voice actors are f**king muppets.

honestly, there are very few voice actors that cant be replaced, and any of the futurama staff, I would say John Di Maggio (Bender) is only the actor that would need to be kept, but even then, he is not irreplaceable.

You'd think these Simpsons/futurama actors would learn not to get in Matt Groening's way. He has stomped out numerous actors who thought they were irreplaceable over the course of his career....

Who do you think hid Phil Hartman's wife's medication? :sarcasm:

Fry and Bender's voices, as well as Zapp's and Fransworth's all need to stay imo.

The rest...Meh.

The show, though, is brilliant. Can't wait for new eps.

I'm sure if they opened up for auditions they could find people who do a good "bender" or "fry" voice.

The show's writing and humour is far and away the main reason people love futurama, and given the characters will still look the same people will adapt to a slightly different voice without too much trouble.

I just hope that Groening doesn't allow them to hold up the making of the new eps.

They can not do it without Billy West, period. He does far too many voices and it would sound waaay too different.

The producers know if I'm sure - they're making idle threats to get the cast to come around. The show would be an epic failure without them.

Don't be ridiculous.

Zapp is simply West trying to sound like Lionel Hutts. No doubt there would be dozens of good voice actors who could do a similar voice.

With the stupid money West is trying to hold out for they could pay another 3-4 actors to take his roles.

It would be a change, but would still be successful.

West was going to originally be Hutts...

West needs to stay if only for his Nixxon.. Arooooooo!

Also a lot of the subtle comedy in the show is from DiMaggio and West free styling. Everyone with the dvds listen to the commentary tracks with West and DiMaggo on them they are a riot.

LOS ANGELES–The Star has learned exclusively that the entire voice cast of Futurama has just signed a new contract with Fox after weeks of intense salary negotiations.

As late as last week, the network was threatening to replace the original voices of Matt Groening's cult-hit cartoon, to the point of actually announcing a casting call for voice actors to replace them.

The Futurama voice cast includes John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal.

The compromise agreement, with the studio paying more and the actors accepting less, comes after the announcement of a 26-episode pick-up here by Comedy Central. Futurama also airs internationally in syndication, has produced four bestselling straight-to-DVD movies (later cut into episodes) and an upcoming feature film.

"We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back. The call has already `gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters," Futurama creators Groening and David X. Cohen said in a joint statement.
