It depends. As I covered in my seperate post, there’s an opportunity with the paceway site to make it a real community asset. Parklands, cafes, play equipment could be installed around the site. At the current location it’s just be a stadium, not much room for anything else. I can see an argument for both, but I don’t live in the Penrith area.

There’s also an opportunity to sell off the existing stadium site to developers, this could be used to pay for the paceway site.
We had this debate in perth for subiaco replacement. For 2 decades they argued back and forward about building on the existing Subi oval site or moving somewhere else. Thankfully they picked the right choice and moved it to an area that has become a real community asset. What they've done around the stadium and along the river as part of the development is stunning and very well utilized by the good folk of Perth, especially families. If Penrith has plans for something like that I would say go for it! it then becomes much more than just a stadium.

Maybe a bit of a rethink about single occupancy stadiums is needed? We currently have two tiers of stadium in Sydney Tier 1 - Accor, Allianz Tier 2 - Commbank
Maybe a tier 3 is needed for the likes of Manly, Penrith and Cronulla. Something akin to the Hull stadium. Quality enough to be a big step forward for the fans but not so big and flash that no one can afford to build it. 25k and built 20 years ago for $80million. 20 years on it still stands the test of time as being a good modern mid size stadium

Building costs in the UK are just so much cheaper than here.

I know as a local, To not have to spend hours getting home after a gig sounds good as unlikely as it seems
I'm sure it would suit you lol. But that's not how business cases for tours stack up! If you where going to play a second night in Sydney why would you go to the expense and trouble of moving venues? Only reason would be if you think you wouldn't be able to sell tickets for a second crowd in Sydney but could in Penrith. That's probably unlikely. There is good reason that this doesn't happen anywhere.

Sure, they are not in Brisbane. But what was the business case for those two stadiums? A business case that Penrith could replicate?
NQ's federal contribution was smoke and mirrors, an accounting trick. The Feds gave $100M and took a previously committed jobs package worth $100M elsewhere.

That will be debated in Parliament. Labor has asked for the business case, No doubt it will get leaked out when it is

Newcastle is literally setup for sport only, Can it be used for corporate events outside sport though? CommBank is used for all sort of things. Both CommBank and Allianz has Basketball courts and other things outside.

For Reference the Area at the Paceway is double both of those, so you can fit picnic areas etc outside.

It is across the road. So just as easy, A 2nd Hotel and Conference centre being built at Panthers certainly opens up that immediate area for all round usage

Being from Newcastle it is used for other things. There are also a fair few sporting grounds it - hockey fields are right next to it, soccer and cricket right across the street. They are also starting to use it for concerts.

One of the reasons why Wests Newcastle were always being asked to get involved with the Knights is not just because they are loaded but also because their leagues club is about a 10 min walk from the ground.

Hopefully they do this. That might also increase the chances of other funding down the line.

The current site is just the Stadium, An old training field. Sewage pipes in the wrong area means you can't do much.

Paceway site offers much more options. Cafe's, Restaurants etc

Look it sounds good. I wish it was just a bit bigger. Also I just hope it doesn’t mean that there is no more investment.

Don’t know what one would do to fix the second issue.

I don’t see what bigger gets you?

For the Panthers, certainly 25k is better. It’ll provide a superior atmosphere whilst still providing room for growth.

Indeed they are. I guess our last stadium you could class as tier 3 was NQ which is 25k built for $250mill in 18/19. If there is cost saving from that one in some way (not sure if there were extra costs associated with that project like transport, external parks, cyclone proofing etc?) then it may be possible to build a decent 25k stadium for $200mill ish?

Recent stadium build completions in Australia
2022 Allianz 45.5k $830mill
2020 Qlnd country bank 25k $250mill
2019 Commbank 30k $300mil
2018 Optus Stadium 60k $1.8bill
2013 HBF Park rebuild 21k $125 mill
2010 AAMI park 30k $268mill
2008-10 McDonalds Jones rebuild 33k $110mill
2008 Cbus stadium 27k $170mill

I know! It is an incredible venue though. That price also includes all the parks they did around the stadium and along the river, the new train station and redirecting of train lines and the worlds most expensive footbridge across the river lol. They spent $95mill just on the footbridge!

Actually I just read that the train station brought the cost to $2.1 billion.

haha, We're liked that cashed up bogun that goes for all the optional extras on the V8 Ute, then buys a mega jet ski for the back of it lol.

The last time I went over there it was nearly built. That whole area looked amazing.

nah, there was a Govt enquiry when the new Govt got in. It was $1.8bill total cost ($200mill more than original estimates).
That was $300mill transport link costs, $250mil parks, footbridge etc $1.25bill actual stadium.

Commbank and Qlnd Country Bank are very good deals considering their size. You won’t get anything as cheap as Newcastle ever again (unless we go through a recession)

it really is stunning, the stadium, the transport links, the parks around it and its location. Not often I congratulate a Liberal Govt but they nailed this one! Only annoying thing is they should never have wasted $125mill upgrading HBF Park in 2013 and they could have built a rectangular stadium on the empty land right next to it!
