So the Chairman of the SCG ..this guy Tony Shephard
http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/club/administration/meet-the-board

Seems to think that Allianz is a security risk, and needs a $1B upgrade..

Which would keep ANZ oval.. and shit.. leaving it for GWS to use into the future for big games..

This guy Tony, is born in Geelong, total died in wool AFL guy, and also surprise surprise chairman of West Connex..

Oh and Stuart Ayers the sports minister is also the member for West Connex..

This is rotten to the core...

Rebuild an option after government warned about Allianz Stadium safety
The Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust has raised concerns about the safety of Allianz Stadium with the NSW government in a move that could prompt a renewed examination of the feasibility of a total rebuild of the ageing venue.

The government remains committed to investing $1.6 billion to provide the state's stadiums with a much-needed makeover, although it is unclear how the funds will be allocated to the ANZ Stadium and Allianz projects. Sports Minister Stuart Ayres last week said a decision would not be made until the government received a "detailed business case" for the redevelopment of ANZ Stadium, which isn't expected until the end of the year.

Another factor for consideration is the cost of maintaining Allianz Stadium to ensure it complies with safety regulations. The issues around safety and comfort of patrons at the stadium have been raised with Ayres by SCG Trust chairman Tony Shepherd.

Allianz Stadium, originally known as the Sydney Football Stadium when it was built in 1988, will need significant investment just to bring it up to existing security and safety compliance standards. It is estimated those costs alone would total about $140 million, without providing any discernible improvements to the game-day experience.

A refurbishment would require an outlay of at least $400m, while a knock down and rebuild would likely total $600m. The cost to the taxpayer for the latter option would be less, given the Trust would likely commit upwards of $50m towards the project.

Any new stadium, with a capacity of about 45,000, would be built on land the Trust owns, rather than encroaching on adjoining areas.

Several NRL clubs are sweating on the government's decision. ANZ Stadium's main tenants, South Sydney, Canterbury, Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra, are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of clarity surrounding the Olympic stadium. A total rebuild at Moore Park will temporarily displace the Roosters and several other teams, including A-League champions Sydney FC and rugby union's Waratahs.

Shepherd said the NSW government would factor in the costs of maintaining Allianz, as opposed to giving it a rebuild, before making a call. "It's up to the government where it spends money on stadiums and we will respect the judge's outcome, whatever it may be," Shepherd said. "Suffice to say, the Sydney Football Stadium is certainly a very old stadium and needs some investment. We'd be happy to see that happen. We recognise the government hasn't got a bottomless pit of money and it's a question of whatever their priorities are."

How convenient and not at all suspicious...

Rugby league emerges as shock contender for first sport to be played at Perth Stadium

THE National Rugby League’s two-day Nines festival could be the surprise event to open the Perth Stadium.

The NRL is considering staging the pre-season carnival-style competition, featuring its 16 teams, over a weekend in early February. The stadium’s official handover is scheduled for February 22.

Cricket Australia and the WA Cricket Association have said they still hope a one-day international between Australia and England could be the blockbuster first sports event at the stadium on January 28. They are willing to delay a decision on the venue.

It is still to be decided which of the State’s AFL teams will play first at the stadium. But rugby league could steal a march on the “traditional” WA sports of cricket and AFL with its short-form carnival.

The WA Government is in talks with the NRL about hosting the event to showcase the stadium but would have to pay around $3 million to secure it.

“Event announcements will be made in due course,” VenuesLive chief executive Mike McKenna said.

An NRL spokesman confirmed the governing body was negotiating with competition organiser Duco Events and Auckland Tourism about the future of the event that has been held in New Zealand since 2014.

The popularity of the tournament is falling in Auckland, although it still attracted crowds of more than 22,000 each day at Eden Park.

It is understood the NRL is also close to finalising a deal that would bring two big games to the stadium for a day-night double header.

The NRL is already bringing a showpiece 2019 State of Origin clash to Perth Stadium.
South Sydney Rabbitohs, who have a big following in WA and have already brought nine matches to Perth, are set to sign off on a new multi-season deal and both Canterbury Bulldogs and Melbourne Storm are said to be on the radar.

Manly Sea Eagles have another season left in their three-year deal to play the NZ Warriors at nib Stadium.

Those damn NRL administrators they haven't got a clue , not thinking outside the square, not prepared to
sneak under the fumbler's guard, not prepared to promote the game in other non heartland states. No they are all hopeless.Having the audacity to possibly grab the new stadium as an opener.
They should all be fed to the quokkas.
It's up to Duco whether they want to retain Auckland as the 9s venue.

You see me ole China, the fact the NRL has made the front page of the West Orstralian ,with such an audacious possibility is something money can't buy in publicity for the game.

Already this will probably be giving the cricketing fraternity the crabs, and the mere thought may even be stiffing the West Coke Eagles let alone the Fremantle Deckers.

If it doesn't make the opening it's no skin off the admin's noses. They'll get to play there via Tests/SOO even 9s.
Bet the Farce were wishing they could possibly open the new stadium, now they are looking at their ceremonial opening of ARU envelopes with pink slips .

Hopefully this is all part of a continued push towards finally having a team in Perth. We're seeing more NRL games continue to go there. Now we have international games, a SOO and potentially the nines being played there. We're continuing to build interest and it would be the perfect time to expand (just before the next TV deal to maximise what we can get).

Absolutely. The mere possibility of the NRL making a decent move completely negates anything else they have done wrong or continue to do wrong.

This would be good but seriously get a grip.

Not an 'NRL' stadium, but $25m for a rugby league stadium in Darwin is pretty good news

I dont know how that is going to work. They had to get out of Richardson Park because they couldn't pay for the maintenance, supposedly. So what's changed?

Who does it belong to? Who pays? Etc. a number of the older clubs are very leery of the development and were treated like mushrooms all through the process. Stem is entirely correct to be extremely suspicious.

Frank Geddes, Fred McCue, etc and including my father spent years developing Richardson park and the the NTRL threw it away to get a shiny new toy that the probably still cant afford, and they may have no control over because Souths rugby union will have the lease.

Good luck to them.

I loved playing at richardson park, but it was in a bugger of a location, and the last time i was there (2011) it was at least overdue for a renovation. Mararra is at least centrally located.
I'd assume the stadium would be some kind of partnership between the govt and the ntrl. It's likely a compromise, the government wouldn't have wanted to spend money on a ground tucked away in the mangroves.
Either way, the govt willing to invest in rugby league is great

I've followed a game that has been handicapped by the people in charge of it for as long as I can remember. I don't give the adiministrators the benefit of the doubt just because I'm an NRL fan. I'm happy to say when they get something right and if this happens I'll give them their due credit.

How about me following it since the 70s ,gives me some input, into what has or is going on.
I don't give any admin the benefit of the doubt,I rely on results ,money on hand and what they do with it.

I've bagged the admins of Arthurson/Moffat/Gallop/Smith/now the current lot ,when they stuff up, but ATST I give kudos when I see positives.Blanketing with negatives for the sake of it,is not my go.
Arthurson re ties with Manly and the rub of the green.
Moffatt because he had not a clue and was more interested in cycling.
Gallop, becuse he treated the Storm as not worthy of development monies and giving in to News
Smith because he promised so much and delivered comparatively so little and jumped the Tv negotiating gun.
Grant and Greenberg, because the game ATM is running around like headless chooks putting gout brushfires.More so Grant, becauseof his lavish promises to the clubs, have created the current player v admin donnybrook.

If the current initiative to get the new Perth stadium with the 9s as an opener is a goer, why should I not applaud the effort, and indeed recognise they are doing something now .
