They're trying to be the NRL.

Which just proves that those people running football in this country just don't get it or understand the game.

We are not the NRL or AFL.
Football doesn't need to be like these sports. It has its own culture.

I just posted these three videos on the Eels forum.
Imagine these games being held in Sydney? Away from the home teams grounds?

I have zero love for the FFA and the A-League. They used my hometown as a pawn in the game for WC Bidding and then shit canned the Fury as soon as the bid was lost even though the crowds were on par with a few other clubs at the time (even with 2 of the wettest summers in TVL in record) and better than the last few "additions" to the comp.

The last 2 GF's couldn't even fill AAMI Park and the last one had 2 Melbourne teams ffs. Maybe if the last 2 GF's were packed to the rafters they wouldn't have gone down this path?

Can you imagine a Brisbane vs Western Utd final in Sydney?

Surely the NSW tax payers are pissed off about this?

Yeah disgraceful decision. I don't know how the NSW govt. gets a ROI. The A League isn't strong or established like the NRL or AFL. Imagine a GF featuring Perth v Wellington?

Is there a chance that the contract could be torn up?

I think the NSW gov is desperately trying to overtake Victoria as Australia's "sporting capital". The problem is Sydney has a dreadful record of drawing consistently big crowds to its events.

Rumours a league to expand to Canberra which has to mean Barr will have no choice then but to do the ground ?

Not even a small chance. If the NRL and Super Rugby who have been there for decades can't get it off the ground, why will a sport that draws 5-7k a game get it done?

He’s already pivoted to ‘we could just upgrade Bruce Stadium for less’.

That’s the best I think we can hope for really.
As much as he’s to blame the arlc have done nothing to facilitate a new stadium

going back to Greenberg when they initially refused to allow Canberra to host prelim finals

even promising to play a test match there each year could’ve made the difference

as much as I love Sydney rugby league it their job to look at other areas too and they’ve done little for Canberra going back to not making channel nine show more of their games

I’d even give them a few origins if they built a new 30k stadium

Nah, he’s pivoted to we could explore seeing if it’s feasible to upgrade Bruce, i.e. do an expensive study which he’ll ignore if it doesn’t find what he wants it to find.

Though, TBF, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he convinces the feds to pay for a significant upgrade to Bruce as part of their reinvestment into the AIS, then proceeds to fund a state of the art oval in a better location. That’d fit his MO.

The early delays to the stadium were definitely because he was trying to convince the rectangular sports to accept an oval, so I wouldn’t put it past him to pull something like that.

All I can say is that the only way to change things for the better (and not just when it comes to the stadium BTW) is to stop voting Labour and Greens until they stop taking the ACT for granted.

Greenberg enforcing the rules and not allowing Canberra to host a prelim in a stadium that didn’t meet the minimum standards would have done more to force the issue on the stadium than almost anything else could have. It was a massive missed opportunity to force the point.

But you’re right the NRL and ARLC have totally ignored the stadium debate here for over a decade now, when the odd nudge here or there probably would have been enough to get it over the line in the past.

It’s especially offensive when they’ll fall over themselves when some nuffy councillor offer to throw chicken feed at a ground in Sydney that’d be better off condemned, and shows just how independent our independent commission actually is…

Maybe the stadium situation might change when Barr is no longer the Chief Minister.
The odds of Labour and the Greens being voted out are slim to none. There’re simply too many partisans in Canberra whom will vote Labour/Greens no matter what.

When Barr eventually decides to move on, he and Labour will pick a replacement that shares his ideals.

In other words I don’t see anything changing for a long time unless something radical and unpredictable happens.

Nsw govt has money for events when it suits it
Unless Sydney teams make all three GFs, this will go down as one of the strangest and stupidest decisions for both parties.

Depends on how much money they get just from the Destination NSW funding against what money they'd have gotten thru the gate from ticket sales for the "home" team hosting the GF.

The past few year's attendances -

2022 Grand Final - 22,495 (AAMI Park, Melb City v Melb Victory)
2021 Grand Final - 14,107 (AAMI Park, Melb City v Sydney FC)
2020 Grand Final - 7,051 (BankWest Stadium, Sydney FC v Melb City)
2019 Grand Final - 56,371 (Optus Stadium, Perth Glory v Sydney FC)
2018 Grand Final - 29,410 (McDonald Jones Stadium, Newc. Jets v Melb Victory
2017 Grand Final - 41,546 (Allianz Stadium, Sydney FC v Melb. Victory)
2016 Grand Final - 50,119 (Adelaide Oval, Adel. Utd v West. Syd. Wanderers)
2015 Grand Final - 29,843 (AAMI Park, Melb Victory v Sydney FC).
