as a Queenslander who used to travel to both cities a lot for work, I found the Sydney vs Melbourne thing was usually pushed by people from Melbourne more so than Sydney... perhaps things have changed in the last few years though... I agree with you about this forum being too AFL obsessed.
My friends from Perth who have lived in both cities have said the same thing.

Not while Eden Park is part of the proposal because the Eden Park Trust which owns EP is deeply connected with cricket. It’s pretty much part of the package there.
As far as I’m aware the rival waterfront stadium proposal (which I’d prefer) doesn’t accomodate cricket and is a dedicated rectangular football design.

What happened to the Western Springs proposal for cricket? A ~20,000 specialised cricket ground for Auckland seemed like a bit of a no-brainer.

Especially since keeping cricket at Eden Park effectively limits cricket in Auckland given NZC is now playing test matches at smaller, dedicated venues like Bay Oval, Hagley Park and The Basin.

Not sure but it seems like a no-brainer especially if they’re going to stop using it for speedway anyway.

Will the capacity be only 30k?

“Surrounding the playing field will be two-tier stands with a permanent capacity of 25,000 spectators. Modular stands behind the north end of the pitch will accommodate an additional 5,000 people. When they are folded down, the space gained will be usable, for example, to build a stage. Numerous catering facilities will be available to fans at the stadium. The facility is to have a reinforced, seismic-resistant structure.”

Sounds like the temporary stands don’t need to be taken away as such but “folded down”?

Is that 5k stands each behind both sticks?

That’s disappointing considering the cost of the stadium and the 39k capacity of the old stadium.
25/30k seems about right for them for Super Rugby games and some All Blacks games
I assume that would make it about the 3rd largest stadium in the country

NZ really has it worked out when it comes to Stadiums in their smaller cities. Heaps of 15-25k stadiums in places less than 100k population.

Australian cities of similar size have 6-12k parks with mostly hills.
They do but they are mostly pretty basic in design with either 1 or 2 grandstands and grass hills or no covered seating.

im guessing it’s a lot cheaper to build stadiums in New Zealand compared to Australia.

yeah spot on there.

not really. I can’t think of any reason it’d be dramatically cheaper, probably a bit more expensive.

The other thing is the difference in where sport is played- traditionally the provincial rugby setup in NZ meant you’d regularly get big games in places like Rotorua, Napier or New Plymouth, whereas in Aus a lot of the regional towns never see big sports events unless an NRL side takes a game “to the bush”.
