He does tend to idolise the fumblersSorry mate, Lions and Suns are not in the same Universe as the Broncos and Titans. Gold Coast is nowhere near an AFL city. This myth born out of AFL House needs to die

Building a stadium as part of an urban renewal project may be a good idea
This was part of the reasoning for the Cowboys new ground i.e. have events near the city centre - however, I have heard that there has been limited renewal of the area in Townsville since the new stadium despite them drawing decent crowds
I’m having a week off and have been trolling the afl sites for team numbers compared to league. It’s a no contest throughout SE Qld through to the Sunshine Coast. Rugby league team numbers completely dominate. To say otherwise is to lie.Sorry mate, Lions and Suns are not in the same Universe as the Broncos and Titans. Gold Coast is nowhere near an AFL city. ok - just realised the stadium didn't open till 2020 (bad timing)Everything got put on hold with covid mate, the green light has been given for a Hilton to be built next door to QCB stadium, they have adjusted the design earlier in the year but i think earth works starts early next year. There's a a few older pubs in South Townsville that have had make overs recently and a few more hotels in Palmer st have been built, I don't think you can understand the impact the 'rona had hey.
There's a boardwalk being built that follows Ross Creek near the stadium up to and past the night club area as well, I think you'll see construction accelerate a fair bit in Tvl over the next few years, the forecasts are that they're expecting real estate to go up as people are feeling financial pressure and genuinely looking for alternate places to live outside the big cities (just as I sell my investment house up there FML).
Basically Auckland council saying “we know we really need to fix the stadium issue but we don’t want to pay for it, anyone want to build us one?”The latest in Auckland's ongoing saga.
Auckland Council have called for "expressions of interest".
"Interest in what?" You may ask.. well.. interest in.. err.. anything.. New builds, refurbishment, whatever.
Seriously when it comes to stadium strategy, Auckland couldn't steer themselves out of a paper bag.
More, from Urbanism/Public Transport website Greater Auckland here (who honestly share my frustration):
The Stadium Debate Again - Greater Auckland
Auckland’s seemingly ever ongoing stadium debate is about to kick off again with the council putting out a Request for Expressions of Interest for what they call “Auckland Main Stadium”. This isn’t actually about building something but is part of … Continuedwww.greaterauckland.org.nz
The crowds are similar and it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been to the GC but when I was there last there was advertisement everywhere for the suns and essentially non for the Titans. What are you going off to say the Suns aren’t as big as the Titans?Sorry mate, Lions and Suns are not in the same Universe as the Broncos and Titans. Gold Coast is nowhere near an AFL city. Yeah, the shame is that the Mt Smart stadium is owned by Auckland Council.. so unless the council can be swayed to upgrade it, we're left with the same stasis that's been in place for years.Seriously though if I was the Warriors I’d be pushing hard for 50M or so to upgrade Mt Smart on the rationale that nothing else is going to get finished in the next decade and it’d at least give the city one decent rectangular facility in the 30-35k range.
Most stadiums in Aus are council owned too- so that’s not necessarily a huge impediment. You just have to convince council it’s in the city’s interests to have good stadia. One advantage a Mt Smart upgrade would have would be it’d be WAY cheaper and quicker to do than any other option.Yeah, the shame is that the Mt Smart stadium is owned by Auckland Council.. so unless the council can be swayed to upgrade it, we're left with the same stasis that's been in place for years.
I wonder if the Warriors or some money-man or the NRL itself could sway the Auckland council to sell Mt Smart, so they can just get on with a refurbishment.. or even a new build?
They wouldn't need the whole site, just the main stadium footprint & access in & out of it - leave the #2 ground (athletics track) & some surrounding land in the hands of the council.
Yeah, exactly.Basically Auckland council saying “we know we really need to fix the stadium issue but we don’t want to pay for it, anyone want to build us one?”
Still, the one small positive we can take from it is that it’s an admission that there’s an actual need, and that it probably doesn’t involve handing hundreds of millions over to the Eden Park trust.
Lol.. convincing the council to DO ANYTHING is like *insert futile & unpleasant task here*Most stadiums in Aus are council owned too- so that’s not necessarily a huge impediment. Here’s a start. Participation. Here’s another. Crowds. Try this one- visible evidence of more league supporters. I’m not including paid advertisements because it proves nothing. You are either very silly or a trollThe crowds are similar and it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been to the GC but when I was there last there was advertisement everywhere for the suns and essentially non for the Titans. My main point is councils are generally who own stadiums- we don’t generally have mega rich sorts clubs who can afford their own in this part of the world.Lol.. convincing the council to DO ANYTHING is like *insert futile & unpleasant task here*
I'm sure they'd rather just keep commissioning studies & calling for expressions of interest than actually start making decisions - let alone acting on any decision & putting someone's nose out of joint.
Yeah, exactly.
Whatever happens, the end result has to be...
* A dedicated rectangular stadium for footy & concerts, with a "club mode" of approx 25k give or take (lower tier, top curtained-off), and a full capacity between 50k and 60k.
* A dedicated cricket oval, about 30-40k capacity tops (cricket doesn't draw huge crowds), capable of being a secondary concert venue when the first stadium is busy/out of action.
Both need to be near decent public transport links, and bonus if the footy ground is covered (fixed OR retractable roof) as the Auckland rain is increasingly likely to become a factor with sub-tropical weather tracking South more and more.
The crowds are not similar. Troll harder next time. The crowds are similar and it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been to the GC but when I was there last there was advertisement everywhere for the suns and essentially non for the Titans. But he saw some posters! The crowds are not similar. Troll harder next time.
I’ll issue a retraction. Just looked up crowds for suns and then titans this year. The titans averaged nearly 20k. Very good. When did they get that jump? So 13k suns v 20k tits. That’s what it should be.The crowds are not similar. Troll harder next time.

Except suns reported crowds are dodgy AF and are closer to 1300 than 13000 in realityI’ll issue a retraction. Just looked up crowds for suns and then titans this year. The titans averaged nearly 20k. Very good. When did they get that jump? So 13k suns v 20k tits. That’s what it should be.
