Warriors have to start taking their bigger games to Eden park

selling out a final in 40 minutes is just stupid

Eden park had another 5k plus watching on the screen

they are a big club now

not Moana Pacifica lol
Yeah they could but it’s a financial risk- Eden park isn’t council owned and probably charged significantly more rent so likely needs well over 30k to make more money than a sold-out Mt Smart. An upgraded Mt Dmart would be more beneficial to the club’s bottom line.

They averaged 22k this year

getting over 30k to big games should be pretty easy

and the corporate facilities would be way better too

Upgrade Mt Smart to around 35k. All seater with four sides of the ground and no hills.

When you think of Mt Smart, you think of Warriors and NRL. Just like Eden Park with the All Blacks and union.

Easiest way to do that would be to build a permanent wrap around south stand and move the current temporary south stand to the north end. Could also build some seated terracing on the north hill pretty easily.

The AFL would throw a lot of advertisement money at the hypothetical AFL club in canberra (way, way more than the Raiders would get).
Plus all the away fans would travel as they do for AFL - unlike league.
I think an AFL team in canberra would out draw the Raiders.
So why isn't it now then?

Yep, assuming that they were reasonably well run, an AFL side in Canberra would be as big as the Raiders if not bigger from day one. Their average attendance would quickly outpace the Raiders as well if an oval was built with a big enough capacity to sustain it.

The reason for that is, shock horror, there's more to Aussie Rules (AR) than just the AFL!

For historical reasons Canberra has a long history with AR and there's a huge bed of intergenerational support for the sport here. A huge portion of Canberra's population are expats as well, and a huge portion of those expats come from west of the Barassi Line (RIP). In my experience there's also significantly more overlap between the AR and RL fanbases in Canberra compared to other markets like e.g. Melbourne and Sydney.

Aussie Rules has more clubs, teams, and significantly higher participation numbers in Canberra itself than RL as well. Multiple of those clubs are highly successful businesses in their own right, particularly Eastlake and Ainslie. Aussie Rules is also very healthy in the private school system, which is a big deal in Canberra.

Just spending a bit of time traveling around Canberra and interacting with people here would make it clear to anybody with a functioning set of eyes and ears that Aussie Rules is very popular here, similarly popular to RL in fact, and it frankly just speaks to peoples ignorance when they suggest otherwise.
Yet RL still rates better and is better attended in Canberra

You all realise the Warriors taking games to Eden park has been done before right? Short memories. While it was initially a hit with 30K crowds they fell to 13K pretty quickly when the novelty wore off.
Im pretty sure the warriors form would have been dog sh#t at the time but overall I’m in agreement with you.

Part of the reason they average 22k is that they offer cheap GA family passes for the north and south ends, I’m not sure if that would be a viable option at Eden Park. Eden Park is also less convenient by for parking and further from South Auckland (where many fans are based). Eden Park works as a novelty or big event venue but there are good reasons not to move there on a more permanent basis.

Exactly.

plus Mt smart has atmosphere even if it’s just over half-full unlike Eden park which could be a bit soulless unless 3/4’s full.

Yeah i had a look at the seats available either late last night or earlier this morning and at $90- $100 a seat per pop and then scheduled against two very well supported AFL teams playing next door at the MCG,,, that was two big stuff ups.

Thing is, had they swapped the games, you would have had the Knights playing on a 5 day turn around considering they played on the previous Saturday. As such you can't ignore that, and schedule NRL finals matches based solely on what another code does.

So true and when the schedules are done before the season starts for the finals dates you don't know who is playing who in either code and quite possibly there might not even be a clash of the two games being next door to each other at the same time like it happened on Friday.
