The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Consistently rated the 4th/5th best cricket stadium in the country. And no-one's taking a test off the SCG.
And it’s unlikely to ever be much higher than that because Sydney is twice as big a market, and a Melbourne and Perth both have the advantage of high AFL demand. But that doesn’t actually make it a bad stadium.

Its location will be fine for one week of athletics. I’ve been to a packed out concert there years ago, they still had concerts there up to a few years ago. It’s not like it’s the first time 40k people will pack in to the area and for the Olympics I’m sure they’ll make it work.

The report says that any upgrades will involve improved community access and transport options to the stadium, uni & hospital plus the area in general.
Totally. And when a large part of you market is schoool and community events it’s better to not be located right in the city as it’s easier to bus groups in and out of a suburban facility that actually has parking.

‘There can’t be new stadiums’: Crisafulli rejects review’s Victoria Park call

By Matt Dennien

Queensland LNP leader David Crisafulli has joined Premier Steven Miles in ruling out a new stadium at Victoria Park, as recommended by former Lord Mayor Graham Quirk’s review of 2032 Games venues this week.

But Crisafulli has sought to differentiate his position from the Labor government, criticising Miles’ decision to choose an upgraded Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre as the main arena not suggested by Quirk.

Speaking to reporters at parliament, Crisafulli has outlined some more detail on what he is proposing to do differently, saying he would establish a new independent delivery authority if elected in October which would report back within 100 days.

The group, Crisafulli said, would likely replace the government’s own version to be established by midyear, be named before the election, and given terms of reference to deliver planning options with a focus on road and rail legacies, use existing venues and keep within the current funding levels.

“There can’t be new stadiums, because that’s not what Queenslanders signed up to,” he said.

“For 1000 days, the Labor government has torched the games. I’m asking Queenslanders for 100 days to fix this mess.”

Victoria Park project is looking less and less likely, but also QSAC if the Liberals get in. I'm not sure where "no new stadiums" leaves us. Sounds like back to the Gabba rebuild if Chrisafulli gets in? Showgrounds maybe?

Hopefully the government can communicate this and get their point across. It’s not just about paying spectators, even if it was $2.7-3.4b for 13-18k extra seats at the Gabba or Victoria park is never going to go close to paying for itself either.

Hopefully with some more planning they can get the QSAC price down and split the difference between Suncorp and the Gabba. Suncorp should get more if it’s going to be the face of the games and main venue for the city going forward.

Sounds like the LNP agree with Labor but are just looking for a pint to differentiate tbh.

Brisbane 2032: David Crisafulli rules out Victoria Park stadium

David Crisafulli will not build a new Victoria Park stadium in Brisbane’s inner-city as recommended by an independent review, saying no new stadiums for the 2032 Games would happen under a government he leads.

Despite a $450,000 taxpayer-funded review analysing 900 submissions and declaring a new stadium at Victoria Park would offer the best value for money, the Opposition Leader on Thursday completely ruled it out.

His position follows that of Premier Steven Miles, who also rejected the independent advice and has pushed forward with a $1.6bn plan to revamp the outer-suburb Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre.

Instead, Mr Crisafulli promised to establish an independent delivery authority should he win the October election – but with a terms of references which would restrict the authority’s recommendations to ensure no new stadiums.

“I didn’t create this mess. We are here because for 1000 days the government has created a mess,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Within 100 days, there will be a plan to deliver generational infrastructure done by the best and brightest with the clearest terms of reference to deliver a world class Games, but more importantly generational infrastructure.

“I’m giving Queenslanders a pathway to fix this mess.”

As well as no new stadiums, the authority would be charged with prioritising road and rail infrastructure, delivering a plan within the existing funding envelope, and “presenting legacy options for all Queenslanders”.

But Mr Crisafulli did not say where the Games could be held – the Gabba, QSAC, Carrara, or anywhere else – saying that would be up to the authority to investigate

I would say this pretty much rules Victoria Point out now. New Stadiums won't even be considered in his review. which takes away the chance of the review recommending Victoria Point after.

Victoria Park is dead and so is any large scale rebuild of the Gabba. It’s just a debate over details and whether QSAC is part of it at this point.

So neither Labor or the Libs want to spend billions, in fact the opposition leader wants to spend even less than the Miles Government and yet both national and local media are running stories that this is some a massive cock up. Like what the f**k is actually going on? This is either arrogant NSW and VIC piling on QLD (probably jealousy) or the AFL has the whole media in its pockets lol

There’s been talk of upgrading Carrara for the athletics/track as that what was used at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and was part of the original pitch to the IOC in 2020/21. The original pitch also allowed for events to be in on the Sunny Coast too.

so the Suns may get an upgrade, Suncorp gets an upgrade and the Gabba gets nothing

The current proposal for the Gabba getting funding isn’t contingent on Athletics being there- it’d be QSAC that would miss out if Athletics went to Carrara.

The NSW government only a couple of years ago received a quote of 25 million dollars to stick a third flag pole to accommodate the aboriginal flag on the harbour bridge. I know there’s safety infrastructure costs and probably some contingencies but sheesh. Nothing surprises me anymore.
$25m for a flagpole?

I wonder how much influence the CFEMU has on construction costs spiralling out of control?

It would be ironic if it cost Labor the next election.

It’s not the price of the flagpole, it’s the cost of getting something that size and weight onto the top span of the harbour bridge. Think of the equipment and logistics involved.
