The AFL have had a major strategic blow with Miles' announcement. They are now using every resource available to them to discredit the decision-making process.

Mainly their media allies and wannabe social media influencers. Gerard Whately ffs.

Unfortunately, the NSW media are not renowned for their strategic analysis capability and so are joining in the pile-on because 'Queenslanders'.

We'll be on our own in the face of this southern blizzard of bullshit. In the end, the Games will be just fine and we'll end up with the best footy stadium in the country.
We need to build a wall....

Its short sighted knee jerk for votes by a qlnd govt under pressure.
Suncorp will need much more than that to get it to 70k+ and fit for the next 40-50 years.
Gabba needs the $500mill plus another $1bill in ten years according to the report just to keep it going. And it will still be behind Melbourne and Perth.
And they are spending $1.6bill on a 14k athletics stadium that will be pretty sht for the Olympics.

Taking the RL rose tinted glasses off its a pretty poor outcome for $3billion stadium spend all round and for the Olympics which was the point of it all.
No one here gives a f**k that our AFL stadium isn't as good as Melbourne or Perth. We are a RL state and Suncorp is one of the best around

I’ve no skin in the game so as a neutral it looks a pretty sht outcome for $3billion. A small athletics stadium and patching up two old stadiums. And Olympics with a sub standard main venue that’ll embarrass australia. It’s not great.

if the $500mill adds 10-15k seats to Suncorp then that’s great for RL, soccer and union.
Didn't you also say that Vegas wouldn't work, the Dolphins were the wrong choice and PVL isn't a good administrator? 0-3 so far

Queenslanders are so scared of AFL, they would rather have relatively shit Olympics than a new stadium just because AFL can also use it. As if AFL is ever taking over from RL anywhere north of Canberra. Totally irrational thinking.
Since afl isn’t taking over why should it have a better stadium than the sport that is number one

using your logic they should build a 110k rectangular stadium in Melbourne

there is no need for. 55k afl stadium in Brisbane it’s a white elephant

You @Perth Red genuinely think QLDers should have been happy with Lang Park getting nothing, and the AFL getting a shiny new stadium?

What planet do you two live on?

The AFL compromised an entire state’s opportunity to host decent WWC games by not letting them use Docklands, so scared were they of women‘s football.

Government statement.

Regarding Victoria park & the Gabba from same report:
The Review panel recommended a brand new multi-billion dollar stadium at Victoria Park. However, as the reviewers noted, significantly more work is required to understand the opportunity and before these preliminary findings can be relied upon.

That is major discredit against the Quirk review.

Victoria Park was slapped together without any serious analysis or investigation.

Now that more detail is available, some thoughts:
- $500m each for Suncorp and Gabba is the wrong mix. It's a lot of money but not enough to substantially lengthen the life of either venue.
- Would be better to allocate $900m to properly modernise Suncorp and expand capacity to 70-75k, then it's good for another 30 years at least.
- Gabba has been "upgraded" relatively recently and will inevitably be replaced rather than expanded if/when the time comes. Anything more than fresh paint and new toilets is a waste of money.
- $1.6bn on QSAC is insane. There is no way on earth 14k of permanent seating plus the temporary seats should cost that much money. For comparison, that is the same cost as Optus Stadium (including the works to reclaim land and cover over the old tip). Inflation is a factor of course but the site is already a stadium, even $600m would seem on the high end. The government should be looking to bring this cost down as much as possible because most punters will see it as yet another example of Olympic waste.

It was an independent review, why do you think it was biased one way or another? Maybe, just maybe it was a genuine best option form the review undertaken? It allegedly cost $500k to produce so youd hope it was well researched.
Fug me only a naive prat or an afl fan could believe the outcomes of that review weren’t influenced by external interests.

Now that the Miles Government has made the right decision, the next step will be to release details of what an approx $800/$200 million split will do for Suncorp Stadium and the Gabba (though the Gabba is not as important as it is hardly an Olympic venue now).

Once the public sees what legacy they will have in Suncorp Stadium, both as the prime Olympic venue and ongoing showpiece for sport in the city, much of the current bluster will abate.

As for the Gabba, it can be tarted up and given female change rooms, maybe a new scoreboard or the like. Media release complete.

The complaints I saw about the Gabba were:
no female change rooms, poor away team facilities, poor disabled access, poor emergency vehicle access to the field.
None of those things require large scale structural modifications to resolve, they're all either interior fitouts or relatively small scale modifications of localised parts of the stadium. I don't pretend to know exactly what they'd cost but its surely be a fraction of 500M.
The large scale fundamental properties of the Gabba are fine, its well located, the right size and shape, adequately roofed and aesthetically fine.

The Gabba is literally fine. I should know as I’ve been there. It is not the best oval ground in Australia but it doesn’t have to be - it will still get an annual test match. Lions also don’t need anything bigger.

Brisbane doesn’t need an oval ground that matches the best in the country.
Rumoured to be missing out on the 4 test Indian series later this year.

That is because the Indians do not want to play there, and Australian Cricket acquiessence to their demands.

Bad management contributing further to the death of cricket in this country.

Blaming the stadium is convenient cover.
