That is because the Indians do not want to play there, and Australian Cricket acquiessence to their demands.

Bad management contributing further to the death of cricket in this country.

Blaming the stadium is convenient cover.
Consistently rated the 4th/5th best cricket stadium in the country. And no-one's taking a test off the SCG.

maybe they don't want to play there because the away team facilities are shit, something that could be fixed with the current government funding proposal? Doesn't require a whole new stadium.

Rumoured to be missing out on the 4 test Indian series later this year.
Well, the new stadium won't be built by the end of the year so what does that matter?
Perth's new stadium with all the bells and whistles (and ugly grey seating) gets less attendance at tests than the Gabba.

India v Australia will likely go to a 5 test series in the near future anyway.

Queenslanders are so scared of AFL, they would rather have relatively shit Olympics than a new stadium just because AFL can also use it. As if AFL is ever taking over from RL anywhere north of Canberra. Totally irrational thinking.

It has been revealed that the new stadium is worth $3.4 billion. Maybe Queenslanders are scared of being in debt for a long time.

How much should the State Government spend for a possible 3-5 days of test cricket per year/bi-yearly?

Compared to the millions of attendees at Suncorp Stadium across countless events and multiple sports.
This is the rub. A test match will be played in Brisbane whatever the state of the Gabba because it is the 5th best ground. The 6th best ground is probably Hobart or Manuka in Canberra but their way back as far as capacity is concerned.

Cricket wouldn't knock back a complete rebuild of the Gabba or a new stadium but they're not going to push it, its tye Victorian floggers that want it.

Now that more detail is available, some thoughts:
- $500m each for Suncorp and Gabba is the wrong mix. It's a lot of money but not enough to substantially lengthen the life of either venue.
- Would be better to allocate $900m to properly modernise Suncorp and expand capacity to 70-75k, then it's good for another 30 years at least.
- Gabba has been "upgraded" relatively recently and will inevitably be replaced rather than expanded if/when the time comes. Anything more than fresh paint and new toilets is a waste of money.
- $1.6bn on QSAC is insane. There is no way on earth 14k of permanent seating plus the temporary seats should cost that much money. For comparison, that is the same cost as Optus Stadium (including the works to reclaim land and cover over the old tip). Inflation is a factor of course but the site is already a stadium, even $600m would seem on the high end. The government should be looking to bring this cost down as much as possible because most punters will see it as yet another example of Olympic waste.
The NSW government only a couple of years ago received a quote of 25 million dollars to stick a third flag pole to accommodate the aboriginal flag on the harbour bridge. I know there’s safety infrastructure costs and probably some contingencies but sheesh. Nothing surprises me anymore.

People complaining about QSAC being a waste of money but somehow $3.4b for an extra 18k seats that would rarely be needed gets a free pass. The second most expensive stadium ever built behind SoFi for just 55k seats? Nothing to see here.

Not saying the $1.6b shouldn’t be looked at, could be that it was exaggerated in the report to make the other option seem better. Ideally they could bring QSAC down and divert funding to Suncorp & the Gabba.

The part in the government report about QSAC being used more than the Gabba is also ignored. Sure it’s at an amateur athlete, schools & community level rather than paying spectators, but let’s not pretend those extra seats for $3.4b will ever pay for themselves either.

Its going to be 5 Tests next summer moving forward against India so every major city except Hobart gets a test against India like the Ashes.

It is pretty clear the $1.6 billion is exaggerated. The Quirk review is as solid as a gravy sandwich.

The Games will be fine, Suncorp will be awesome and everyone will calm down once the Victorians go back home.
One million percent

Temporary stands would be lucky to be 50 million

I think it’s show they can say to the ioc look we are still spending 2.5 billion we initially promised just spread around now

I don't understand where anyone is getting this 65 000 - 70 000 capacity upgrade for Suncorp is coming from.
It's not possible to add 10-15 000 capacity to a Western Stand upgrade only.
To add this capacity increase, it would have to done to all four sides, which would mean complete removal of the roof.
It ain't going to happen.
Why not add it to L4 full 360 and update the roof

Anyone saying it’s not possible at Suncorp is an idiot

So basically a rebuilt QSAC at the right capacity isn’t a white elephant, and if also contend that its location is fine considering the different demographic of users.

Its location will be fine for one week of athletics. I’ve been to a packed out concert there years ago, they still had concerts there up to a few years ago. It’s not like it’s the first time 40k people will pack in to the area and for the Olympics I’m sure they’ll make it work.

The report says that any upgrades will involve improved community access and transport options to the stadium, uni & hospital plus the area in general.
