Turning the Gabba into a basin reserve/allan Border oval type stadium would be a good idea
Another cricket ground is not required.
If the land is not sold to developers, then a 20k basic rectangular stadium would be perfect for Brisbane Roar, Super Rugby, NRLW, Queensland Cup GF, NRL pre-season, medium sized concerts, etc.

Interesting those estimates have gone from $3.4b for 55k capacity under the Quirk “review” to $2.6b for 60k capacity at Victoria Park.

60k is a touch overkill post Olympics. If they could scale that back to 50k for $2b or so it starts looking a bit more appealing.

Put the rest and whatever else is needed towards getting Suncorp to 60k+ and use Gabba site for a 20k rectangular stadium. Build the new Entertainment centre at Roma St then Brisbane and pretty much all of Queensland is set for its main stadiums for decades.

But, I doubt that will happen for several reasons.

not being super familiar with Brisbane but seem reasonable as it is near transport and the CBD

- new oval stadium for Olympics then used for AFL/Cricket afterwards
- athletics warm up track to be main athletics arena post olympics
- new indoor arena centrally located
- new aquatic centre

Then assume the Gabba is downgraded to suburban cricket ground with some new housing
Maybe Suncorp gets an upgrade

Not great for rugby league but makes some sense
I don’t see how you’d manage to build any housing on the Gabba site while retaining it as a cricket ground in any capacity, it’s just not a big enough site

Seems the Vic park option is gaining momentum. Hope it leaves some money to get Suncorp to 60k ish

Brisbane Olympics organising boss Andrew Liveris has dramatically backed a new stadium for the 2032 Games, revealing a multi-billion-dollar venue at inner-city Victoria Park “makes the most sense”.
In comments effectively pre-empting the 100-day review of stadium options ordered by Premier David Crisafulli, Mr Liveris told the Courier-Mail that he supported the Victoria Park option.

“I would love it, to be perfectly frank,” he was quoted as saying.

“If a stadium like that appears at Victoria Park that fits the future of cricket and football perfectly and has private sector funding that gives it a return like Optus Stadium out in Perth. Of course, Andrew Liveris would say ‘wow, what a great answer for the Olympics’”.

How does someone from qld refer to football as not rugby league or soccer

Whose going to tell him ?

Good luck getting private sector funding for it

I suspect he's referring to football as plural and they think that state of origin etc would move there. Or he's simply referring AFL as 'football' as you mention. Either way, it's a delusional position for a QLDer.

Suncorp at 52.5k v 60k oval ?

He has rocks for brains

There’s no chance private sector will fund it anyway as he wishes

Olympics guy is behind it because it gives the best spectacle for the Olympics. Nothing else reallly matters to him, including where the money comes from.
The question is are the QLD govt fair dinkum about their review or are they just going to bend over and fund this?

Downsizing the gabba like the WACA are doing would be the go. Perfect size for Sheffield shield and women's BBL.

The amount of state of the art ovals in this country which are used by two sports vs the state of rectangular stadiums in this country is just absurd.
I'm not sure that's true.
Optus, Adelaide Oval, MCG ,Marvel and SCG

V

Townsville, Suncorp, Gold Coast, CommBank, Newcastle, SFS, ANZ and Aami. Penrith coming on board soon.

Ground sharing by AFL clubs has helped them.

Main issue is the 2 largest stadiums in Sydney are ovals despite it being a Rugby League city, if Vic Park gets up Brisbane will be in the same boat.

Compare Geelong with all non-capital NRL grounds as well, Newcastle similarly should be aiming for a 40k stadium in the works but there is no talk of further upgrades.

Nothing wrong with having 40-50k Ovals in Brisbane in Sydney as there is a place for them with cricket and AFL but they should be as well as quality rectangular stadia. Sydney should have an 80k rectangular stadiums at Homebush and in Brisbane Suncorp should be 60k+.

If they spend a huge amount on Vic Park it will see Suncorp miss out on funding anytime in the short-medium term. Key is finding a solution that can provide both a decent sized oval and an upgraded Suncorp.
