The NRL should go to 20 teams and have 2 x 10 conferences. A National conference (with a final in Brisbane) and a NSW conference (with a final in Sydney) and have a super bowl type GF each year in each city biannually. That way you can sell a GF to Brisbane each year and a super bowl type game every 2 yrs and get Suncorp to 65000.

That’s actually the plan

And 20 teams is pretty much locked in

I'm not sure that's true.
Optus, Adelaide Oval, MCG ,Marvel and SCG

V

Townsville, Suncorp, Gold Coast, CommBank, Newcastle, SFS, ANZ and Aami. Penrith coming on board soon.

Ground sharing by AFL clubs has helped them.
Ovals range from 55k to 100k

Rectangles range from 25k to 52k (Accor is not a rectangular ground).

That's the point he was making

I’m totally throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks, but the last article spoke about Victoria Park being a world class vicinity a la Melbourne etc- what’s the chances of a 30k Oval to replace the Gabba and a big 70-80k Rectangular Stadium to be the centre piece??? Now that’s generational infrastructure befitting an Olympic City!!

Good crowds in Adelaide for the cricket but I don’t think it’s 50k, there’s plenty of empty seats in the stands.must be using the GWS crowd counters

If this Victoria Park Stadium goes ahead, there is no future for The Gabba.
It should be demolished and sold off to developers so the Govt can recoup some funds to pay for other infrastructure, and at the same time, provide supply for the current housing crisis which would be beside a Cross River Rail station.
Could easily be worth up to 500 million for the govt.

Sydney has done similar to an extent and sold off air rights above metro stations for commercial and residential development.

If they went with Victoria Park then the Gabba site would be perfect for a 20-25k rectangular stadium for Roar & Reds and any Suncorp overflow.

Problem is I don’t see a scenario where it plays out like that. If Victoria Park happens it will most likely take up the whole stadium budget for the Olympics and quite a while after.

Turning the Gabba into a basin reserve/allan Border oval type stadium would be a good idea
In other words Gabba circa 1984.

I'd be happy with that.

Actually, no I wouldn't. Turn it into that 20-25k rectangular stadium that Brisbane needs. Just like Jim 57 said before me.

Id go for 4 groups of 5. Top 3 move into a play-off (2nd v 3rd > winner v 1st)

then a 4 way playoff for the grand final

we would guarantee god knows how many derby games across the years and into every final series

If you were going to build a boutique stadium, you would probably do it at the Albion paceway. The land where the Gabba is would be too valuable to plonk a suburban stadium on.

That’d be a 300m+ total rebuild at today’s prices, vs selling off the site which would net hundreds of millions.
Would make far more sense just to upgrade Ballymore and offload the Gabba.

From a ROI point of view sure, from a location and access and what’s best for the city point of view it would be the perfect spot.

With the difference in size between a 40k cricket oval and a 25k rectangular stadium I’m sure they could find some space for residential developments as well to offset it somewhat.

Like I said though I can’t see how that scenario plays out given the current circumstances so the point is probably moot.
