Olympics guy is behind it because it gives the best spectacle for the Olympics. Nothing else reallly matters to him, including where the money comes from.
The question is are the QLD govt fair dinkum about their review or are they just going to bend over and fund this?
Didn’t the last review propose this as the best option?

Yes the issue is that Sydney and then Brisbane will fall behind in large rectangular stadiums.

Let's never forget what the Olympics did to Sydney with the homebush stadium being an impractical and terrible design for Rugby League, Union and Soccer for the last 25 years and ongoing.

If Brisbane gets a brand spanking new 60k oval, will they really make any large scale investments to Suncorp or any other large rectangular stadiums in the next 20 years?

as you said we will only see major rectangular stadiums right across the country if we get the soccer WC and if fifa dictate they can’t be played at ovals.

There’s two high profile ex politicians from qld on the commission

They should be lobbying for Suncorp

Pvl has missed a trick here
It’s not an easy lobbying position given there is only one rectangular stadium bigger than Suncorp. It’s not like they can threaten to take things to bigger rectangular stadiums elsewhere.

unless you could add 10k or so to Suncorp the thought of spending $500mill for a few extra thou seats may not be appealing to qlnd govt.

Downsizing the gabba like the WACA are doing would be the go. Perfect size for Sheffield shield and women's BBL.

Sure but you ain’t going to be finding a bunch of room for housing development on the same site if you do that. The Gabba just aint that big now. You might squeeze a couple of apartment blocks into the corners if you’re lucky.

Melbourne, Perth & Adelaide sure but nobody is really arguing those should have large rectangular stadiums anytime soon.

Sydney, Brisbane, Newcastle and maybe one day Gold Coast shouldn’t have to sit around waiting for FIFA to show up to get decent large stadiums for their main sport.

Plus it’d be a bonus for any future World Cup bid to have a few more quality rectangular stadiums ready to go.

If this Victoria Park Stadium goes ahead, there is no future for The Gabba.
It should be demolished and sold off to developers so the Govt can recoup some funds to pay for other infrastructure, and at the same time, provide supply for the current housing crisis which would be beside a Cross River Rail station.
Could easily be worth up to 500 million for the govt.

Sydney has done similar to an extent and sold off air rights above metro stations for commercial and residential development.

Suncorp stadium sellouts : rugby league

Origin (1)
Brisbane derbies (2)
Magic weekend (3)

Magic brings in huge tourism benefits

Plus it has 3 regular tenants

Cricket would be lucky to sell out 50k Gabba for one day a year and same with afl

30k rebuild would be the perfect size long term

Suncorp needs to be around 70k. An extra 8k seats won’t justify the cost involved of the upgrade

I agree, no way they would build a new stadium and keep the Gabba as a suburban cricket oval. It is a prime inner city site serviced by public transport and the soon to be completed cross river rail. It would have to be either sold to developers or used for major Government infrastructure

Allan Border field exists in Brisbane though.

This is obviously the ideal. The question is whether they can then fit enough of the major events on a field this size; it would exclude most of the track running.

if the compromise is a bigger field, id be inclined to say no unless there is a decent plan to shrink the field later

The NRL should go to 20 teams and have 2 x 10 conferences. A National conference (with a final in Brisbane) and a NSW conference (with a final in Sydney) and have a super bowl type GF each year in each city biannually. That way you can sell a GF to Brisbane each year and a super bowl type game every 2 yrs and get Suncorp to 65000.
