This really is a new f**king low for the AFL. I know they are corrupt as f**k but this takes the cake for mine. Without being chicken little, I can see our great game getting hosed again by these merkins.

increase the capacity at the showgrounds to 30-35k and the scg will eventually have some works done on the driver avenue stands too which may bump that up to 50k. that's two very good stadiums and enough for AFL in Sydney. just don't f**k up any new major venue on the stadium australia site. a 70k rectangular arena, and a 35k new SFS with the 35k parra and there you have your 5 major stadia.

Spotless will eventually get an upgrade when the BBL expands further. They’re implementing a full home and away season within a few years, the thunder will be the major tenant then. Hell they probably will be this year with just 5 Home games.

But the SCG & Spotless should sit this round of upgrades out, should be rectangular grounds only.

Plenty type Olympic oval grounds, like Roma F/c famous club in Serie A
Tens to hundred of these are around the world.

There is a huge difference between ovals like these and CRICKET ovals. They are not even close in comparison.

For the record the Emirates Stadium is an oval, but the entire stadium would literally fit inside the dimensions of the MCG playing surface.

They’re not going to get ANZ kept as an oval, it’s a negotiating position.

They ask for that hoping the govt give them upgrades to the SCG & spotless as a runners up prize.

Spotless is possible but I have doubts the govt will give them SCG upgrades. Doing both Allianz & the SCG would play out really poorly for their electoral prospects.

So they could sneak a cheeky $150m for an upgrade to spotless (not that it’s needed)
This needed reiterating. McLachlan is very good at lobbying governments for stadium funding and he'd know that the AFL has no say in the configuration of ANZ. It's all for future upgrading of their current stadia and possibly upgrades to training facilities in the near future.

i'm not saying they need to be ungraded now, just that should be the thought behind those two venues down the track

Spotless is only 5 years f**king old

f**k upgrading it at the expense of much older dilapidated stadiums

Brookevale is a dogs breakfast

they open up the gates and you can walk inside brookvale daily. it's no better than a henson park or pratten park.

end of the day, it sits in a safe electoral seat in suburbia and only one club uses it. they will continue to dream

Spotless and the scg should not have one cent spent on them. They have already had millions of dollars in upgrades over the last few years. The $1.6 billion should be spent on anz, Allianz and NRL training centres or upgrades to Sydney rugby league stadiums.

14 years ago in 2003,the Sydney Olympic Stadium was reconfigured to allow retractable seating for AFL.This change is design was hijacked by the AFL to give their sport an outlet to allow atttendances over 65,000 in Sydney

don't let your bias against AFL, cricket or both cloud logic. the SCG & showgrounds are used all year round. they'll get even more use once the BBL season expands. they'll be looked after if required. if that means expanding showgrounds capacity - particularly if Olympic stadium is rectangular - then it will happen.

you make it sound like there will be something left over for clubs after olympic stadium and SFS are done in this round. i guarantee there won't be after every merkin has had his nose in the trough. public construction works are a f**king goldmine for abuse.

Thing is you miss the point. Spotless Stadium is 5 years old. 5 years? How can it be in need of upgrades so soon, or was the design so botched in the first place but no one noticed it for 4 years?

As to the SCG, it has had more funds than every other stadium in Sydney spent on it over the last 5 years whilst the SFS has had little, and ANZ none. As such those stadiums do deserve priority over the others, why should they yet again take a back seat just to satisfy the AFL and the SCG Trust?

i'm not advocating the ovals get funding priority over the olympic stadium and SFS.

The scg and spotless HAVE been upgraded recently. That’s the point I’m making. They received their millions. There are teams from Sydney’s most popular sport playing in 3rd world conditions. They should be a priority as well.

But the SCG & Spotless should sit this round of upgrades out, should be rectangular grounds only.

The Big Bash as it stands is right in the Christmas School Holidays sweet spot and the crowds will likely drop if/when a full home and away season is implemented.

it's a bit more difficult for a government to justify handing over funds for single venues and traininig facilities for each individual team when there are 9 of them.

Agree they won’t be as high as January when it expands into February, but it’ll still beat the GWS easily. Will probably overtake them as the major tenant this year, that’s with only 5 Home games.

5 home games for the thunder could pull 110k - 120k

8 home games at Spotless this year for GWS pulled about 100k (likely inflated too)
