$217mil. I added a bit to cover the underquoting.

You said $300 K. That's $300 thousand, not $300 million.
And yes, $217 million is more like it. 1/5th the cost of the stadium sounds much better.

For the record, it's only a 23000-seat stadium, and the AFL has said "No stadium, no team". Over $1 Billion for a 23000 seat stadium is absolute madness, particularly for a small city like Hobart.
Its ridiculous considering Tasmania has two venues more than capable of holding AFL games in Bellerive Oval (Ninja Stadium) and York Park (UTAS Stadium), that could both easily be upgraded to a comparable capacity for significantly less.

It would be different if Tasmania didn't have any venues capable of hosting pro games, but considering the two venues have hosted 6 AFL games, 1 pre-season & 1 AFLW game this year alone, the venues clearly have good enough playing surfaces & broadcast facilities.

A grandstand on the hill or replacing the members pavilion could easily take Ninja from 20K to 23K; whilst UTAS is already getting a $130m upgrade to take it to 17K.

Interesting this article says basically the Tasmanian AFL team can only work if it is based in Hobart.

Stage 2 of 130 million upgrade just commenced.

Jointly funded by the Tasmanian and federal governments

Yet the AFL want another brand new stadium costing over a billion $$.
The Tasmanian govt should honestly tell them to gagf.

That was $217m out of $775m. Estimates are now 30% higher (or more). So no roof should save at least $300m. No roof also means it only has to be half the height and bulk which also allays some of the other major concerns.

if the roofed stadium doesn’t get up (it’s 50/50), it is likely a compromise will be found.

It was the Tasmanian government that pitched/offered the roofed stadium as leverage to get a team. It worked, but at what cost?

I thought it was the AFL who insisted on the roof?

The funniest part is watching people use Adelaide Oval or Optus Stadium as an example for it working. Those are cities with over a million people living in it. Hobart doesn't even have half of that yet wants to spend over 1 billion on a stadium lol.

Both cities have two AFL clubs playing out at those venues, which equates to 22 games a year. At Hobart, they will only get 7 matches a year. How is it viable at $1.13 billion? For just a 23,000 capacity stadium.

First estimates was at $715 million.

No, it was proposed by the previous premier. Everyone hates the roof at Marvel, strange thing to mandate or even offer.
Its funny, because people on this forum are absolutely pulling there dick over Te Kaha in Christchurch.

"This will change Rugby League for ever", "Everyone will want to play there".

I find Marvel Stadium to have the atmosphere of a soulless casino, particularly on sunny days when the roof is closed.

I think the NRL should have a team in Tazzy. PVL should try to stir the pot down there.
Haha!!

yeah, PVL should use Tasmania as a diversion like the allies did during WW2 with the invasion of France tricking the nazis into believing we are landing in calais and not Normandy.

The real target area of expansion will be Melbourne 2 🤣🤣

Adelaide Oval and Perth Stadium are also the primary cricket venues for the states, adding another 5 BBL matches and at least 1 Test to the regular fixtures each year.

My understanding, and happy to be corrected, is that Cricket will still stay at Ninja Stadium, even if the new venue is completed. Hobart, unlike Adelaide & Perth, aren't really in a position to bid for concerts or major events from other sports like Origin, Gather Round, etc to help pad out the the itinerary.

Do they?
Why?
I've been there quite a few times. I actually think it's fantastic.
When it's open on a sunny day, it's just a great stadium. When it's closed on a rainy day, it's even better, with protection from the elements.
I actually really like Marvel Stadium.
It hasn't been "open on a sunny day" since last decade.

So I assume you haven't been there much recently.

Fair enough having the roof closed when it's raining but it seems the roof is closed 99% of the time on a sunny day now, was there earlier in the year on a beautiful sunny Melbourne Autumn day and walked into what appeared like an underground night club it was so dark and disorientating, the attendant who was in the section where we were sitting said that the roof is rarely opened game day in good weather because the TV broadcasters were complaining about the weird shadows that were cast for broadcasting the matches. The funny thing that day when they were trying to close the roof earlier in the day it got stuck and for a while they thought they would have to put it back as opened completely but they finally got it working again to close right up.
I also found with it completely closed it made for a very humid atmosphere inside.

It just doesn’t feel right, watching football or cricket indoors. Soulless, as Canard says. The roof is nearly always closed. Comparable crowds for AFL and BBL are higher at MCG.
