Was watching nrl and they showed the new buffalo bills stadium under construction next door to the current one. Mentioned Current one was built in 1977 for $44mill US. In today’s money that would be $148mill US. The new stadium is costing $2.1billion, 95 times the price! Stadium construction is nuts.

Expectations around the quality have contributed to those cost blow outs.

Highmark Stadium as an example (which was actually built in 1973 for $22m which converts to $156m today) wasn't much more than a bowl with a few buildings put at one end.

The second tier on the sides would have been the most difficult part and even still they're sitting a fair way back and offer almost no protection.

You compare that to the new stadium, which is multi-tiered, the stands on top of the other, an actual roof, significantly more amenities, etc its like comparing the costs for building a granny flat to a house.

If expectations for new builds were potentially lowered, maybe more venues could get upgrades, though it feels like no one is up for that, especially the builders, suppliers & primary tenants of the venue getting upgraded with government funds.

Australia is an affluent society. People expert more. Like no queue food and drink options (MCG and Melbourne Park have this, it cannot be overstated how good this is). More toilets to reduce waiting and missing the game. Lifts and elevators to upper levels. Padded seats. Enclosed dining and bars. Cover from the weather. Ultimately, the best stadiums will attract the most fans. Building budget stadia in big cities is a waste of money.

NRL should be pushing hard for a short-medium term solution of filling out the “shell” of Suncorp to ~60k and/or a medium-long term solution of a complete rebuild to 70k+.

How many times did the Broncos sell it out this year? Off the top of my head I reckon at least half their games with all but 1 or 2 of the rest selling down to restricted view and single seats.

Hard no to playing at an Oval for the sake of an extra 10k as was being discussed in the crowd thread.

It wasn’t cost effective ie hundreds of millions for a small capacity increase of seats that can’t be sold for a lot of money

Plus it delays a proper rebuild

Probably the greatest figure in Queensland rugby league

I suspect Arthur Beetson might just top him somehow. Not a slight on Wally, but without Artie, State of Origin wouldn't have been a success.

i wonder if any Fairfax journos lurk on these forums? Timing is interesting given the chat the past few days. Good to see it being picked up and discussed more broadly: hopefully some pressure starts to mount for a 2033 rebuild
