It is understood the NRL has raised with the government that it wants to do more to communicate to fans the benefits of both stadiums.
You don't need to go after fans, it's the people on the fence or those that don't even care about sport that need to be told they will end up paying more down the road if it isn't done now.

The government could really diffuse this issue now by scaling back the Allianz project. Would be a smart move.

Put all the savings in to junior sport.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan wants to continue using ANZ Stadium as a finals venue

Neil Cordy, The Daily Telegraph
March 7, 2018 6:17pm

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan wants to continue using ANZ Stadium as a finals venue if the proposed redevelopment does not go ahead.

The ground has drawn the nine biggest AFL crowds outside Melbourne in the game’s history and can hold at least 30,000 more fans than the SCG.

“If it stayed as an oval that would be good for us,” McLachlan said.

“We think the Giants there in a preliminary final ... that’s the right capacity and we’ve shown that when we had 60-odd thousand for the final there two years ago.”

The last AFL match at ANZ Stadium was the 2016 qualifying final between the Swans and Giants, which drew a crowd of 62,222.

Since then GWS membership has pushed past the 20,000 mark and is set to grow to 25,000 this year.

The Giants’ home ground of Spotless Stadium holds around 25,000 and hosted the 2016 preliminary final which they lost to eventual premiers the Western Bulldogs.

The AFL now believes GWS has the drawing capacity to host a preliminary final at ANZ Stadium which doesn’t involve the Swans.

The only way another Sydney derby would be played at ANZ is if the Giants finished higher on the ladder and therefore hosted the match.

The Swans will always host finals at their spiritual home, the SCG.

The AFL lobbied the NSW government last year to keep ANZ Stadium’s oval configuration.

“We put our views to government,” McLachlan said regarding the $2.5 billion Sydney redevelopment.

“But we understand given the volumes of games we play out there, we aren’t a big voice.”

Another arguably bigger problem for the AFL in Sydney is a lack of a second elite ground in the eastern or inner-city suburbs.

If the SCG is unavailable, the only suitable venue for the Swans’ reserves to use is in Blacktown.

“We are working on a lot of different options,” McLachlan said.

“I feel confident of an outcome. Space is at a premium and it’s competitive, so we are working with AFLNSW and the Swans and we just need to get somewhere.”

McLachlan is also working with the Swans to find a suitable training and administration site. The current facility at the back of the Brewongle Stand is outdated and inadequate.

“We’re working with the Swans,” McLachlan said.

“We need to get a result for the footy club and for the players. They are bidding for venues now, so the process is live.”

NRL welcomes bi-partisan support for Sydney stadiums rebuild

NRL Media Release
Wed 7 Mar 2018, 06:57 PM

NRL Chief Executive, Todd Greenberg has welcomed bi-partisan State Government support of plans to re-build both Parramatta and ANZ Stadiums.

Mr Greenberg made the comments after New South Wales State Opposition Leader, Luke Foley confirmed his support for the re-build of both stadiums during an interview on 2GB's Ray Hadley program on Wednesday.

Mr Greenberg went on to confirm that investment in stadia by the New South Wales Government would ensure that the state would remain attractive and competitive in securing matches for years to come.

"Collectively, we have an opportunity in Western Sydney, starting with Parramatta Stadium and including ANZ Stadium, to implement world-class stadia and ensure that New South Wales is a leader when it comes to providing the best seats and the best live experiences for rugby league fans," Mr Greenberg said.

"Population throughout Western Sydney is growing at rapid speed and the support from Mr Foley today to witness the modernisation of both Parramatta and ANZ Stadiums is great to hear.

"A modernised Parramatta Stadium will be the first to open in season 2019 and a modernised ANZ Stadium won't be far behind.

"It's fantastic to have the support of both sides of Government and I thank the Berejiklian Government for their resolve to deliver world-class stadia throughout Sydney, for everyone to enjoy."

Mr Greenberg said it was also pleasing to hear that Mr Foley was open to looking at all options to modernise Allianz Stadium.

"Importantly, new stadia will help support greater economic benefits for the people of New South Wales, as well as providing world-class, live sporting experiences for local, national and international fans alike," Mr Greenberg said.

"This is a landmark time for rugby league and one that will benefit generations to come."

ANZ Stadium: Labor leader Luke Foley admits venue needs investment

Anna Caldwell, The Daily Telegraph
in an hour

LABOR leader Luke Foley’s political promise that he’ll put “schools and hospitals before stadiums” has been undermined by his own admission he’s happy to tear up ANZ Stadium and believes it should be modernised.

Since November Mr Foley has staked his politics on opposing state government plans to rebuild ANZ and Allianz stadiums. But yesterday in a radio interview he admitted he supported ANZ — the more expensive of the two projects.

In a political hit for Mr Foley, NRL boss Todd Greenberg last night welcomed his “bipartisan support” for Western Sydney stadiums.

In the interview, 2GB’s Ray Hadley put to Mr Foley: “I would think you’d be happy that ANZ Stadium be made a rectangular stadium … so rugby league, rugby union and soccer can be played there, we need to modernise the stadium despite the fact that it was only built 20 years ago.”

Mr Foley replied: “Yep.”

Asked again if Hadley was right, Mr Foley again replied: “Yep.” He went on to restate his support for Parramatta Stadium, a $300 million project that he repeatedly has lumped into the cost of the stadiums promise that he opposes.

Mr Foley has made major political capital in opposing stadiums, repeatedly stating he would put “schools and hospitals before stadiums”.

The government has believed privately all along that Mr Foley, a western Sydney MP, would find it politically impossible to turn his back on ANZ Stadium for which he has previously expressed support.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian seized on the radio interview, declaring during question time that Mr Foley’s opposition to stadiums investment had “been blown out of the water”.

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres fired at Mr Foley: “You’ve been all over NSW holding a card saying schools and hospitals before stadiums, except you support the stadiums.”

Mr Foley later attempted to clarify via Twitter, saying he’d “always” supported Parramatta Stadium, and appeared to argue semantics, saying he’d “said nothing of the sort” about rebuilding ANZ Stadium.

Mr Foley again revived his class war of prioritising ANZ over Allianz, stating: “My priority is western Sydney and everyone supports the Parramatta rebuild but I just think the place that hosts the Grand Finals and Origin is a more important priority than the one in the eastern suburbs.”

Mr Foley’s admission is bizarre given the government intends to begin knocking down Allianz Stadium — which is a safety risk due to its age — before the election. By committing to investing in ANZ, Mr Foley would effectively see both stadiums overhauled if he won the election.

Going back to the GWS f**ktards, what was there prelim crowd against Footscray 2 years ago at Spotless? Pretty sure it was only 2/3 full (25k capacity yeah???) and over half the f**king stick insects in the crowd were wearing blue and red........ so shove you prelim plans for AFL at ANZ up your ass.

The really funny thing is that 62000 of those fans were Swannies.

The 222 GWS fans were also added to their membership total, adding to their claim for another govt grant.

So when the Giants march down to Melbourne this week to take on Richmond and the Tiger Army, it's fair to say they won't have ever seen or heard anything like it. More than 90,000 are expected to pack into the MCG on Saturday, and expect 85,000 of those to be success starved Richmond faithful.

Even funnier is this quote. They actually expected 5000 GWS fans to travel to Melbourne? They don't even travel from western Sydney to Homebush.
Deluded f**ks the lot of them.

Was that the year they paid the telegraph to have a couple of bays of seat fillers wearing telegraph shirts?

Ah well. There goes Foley. Good night.

labor needs to now release its stadium policy

that being a down graded venue built at moore park
no palaces to be built in the affluent eastern suburbs
a carbon copy of the brilliant little venue they're constructing at Parramatta will do just nicely, ANZ's plan remains the same

450 million saved for NSW tax payers
butta bing
