The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It is very simple:

Allianz Stadium: Sydney Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Sydney FC

Pirtek Stadium: Parramatta Eels and Sydney Wanderers

ANZ Stadium: Canterbury Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, St George Illawarra Dragons, South Sydney Rabbitohs marquee games, State of Origin, NRL Grand Final, Bledisloe Cup rugby union, NSW Waratahs rugby union, soccer internationals,

ANZ is the premium stadium and deserves the bulk of $1 billion.

Allianz deserves a refurbish of $200 million and that is all.

NRL clubs are so short sighted.

The ANZ plans would of been payed without taxpayer money because they would have to keep up to the standard of the new Moore Park stadium. This was a competitive tension move that will see the NRL only get Parra and ANZ upgraded instead of all three.

I think must be people are of the opinion that a new and bigger stadium at moore park would be a waste of money. Certainly a facelift and an upgrade to its facilities would be beneficial but no more than that imo

One thing smith got very wrong was his crusade in favour of moore park, its clear now that he is gone the nrl has got its act together and the clubs/HQ are going to lobby for olympic park to be reconfigured into the biggest and best rectangular ground in the country, something that sydney really needs but not stuck beside the CBD away from the majority of the population.

The only risk is that if the 5 bigger clubs are grtting big deals and crowds playing at a premium homebush then manly, cronulla, penrtih and to a lesser extent easts could get left behind off the field in a big way. But then again it could be the kick in the ass those clubs need to sensibly allocate games between suburbia and homebush/moore park

Waratahs will still be at Allianz, and if there's a 60k seater at Moore Park, then the NRL GF, Soccer internationals, Bledisloe, Origin etc will all go there because ANZ is a shit stadium for any sport played on a rectangular pitch.

If they were to make the train station a proper artery with several lines converging on it, rather than a single line that goes from one station, smash the f**king shit stadium they have there now and put in a purpose built rectangular footy stadium, THEN and ONLY THEN would it be worthy of the status of "premium."

Right now it's a f**king toilet bowl in a crap location with crap views and no services in the surrounding area.

In an ideal world, we'd build the 60k stadium in the park lands behind Central and have a 30-40k venue at Pirtek.

A 60,000 seater stadium is too small for the big events like Origin, NRL GF, Bledisloe, and soccer internationals. You need a 83,500 seater like now exists at ANZ. Otherwise you lose lots of revenue for these events and keep 23,000 people from attending.

I don't see why... if the Super Bowl can get by with a 68k seater, then we ought to be able to.

In any case, Olympic Park is an awful location and an awful stadium. If they blow the shit hole up and rebuild a purpose built rectangular ground there and make the train station a proper artery, I'll support having it there, but as it stands, it's just crap.

What?

We normally don't sell out the 80,000 seat stadium until the week of the grand final.

I'd have preferred a 60-70k seater at Moore Park, with an upgrade to Parra and a new stadium at Blacktown, and a nuclear weapon lobbed at Homebush.

How? It will be like putting lipstick on a pig.

Waratahs play at Alliance full time now. But i actually agree that a world class stadium in the middle of Sydney is the way to go for big events into the future.

A 200m face lift is all that is needed for Alliance, which is a good Football stadium as is.

ANZ is a sht stadium for club football and no amount of money spent on it will change that. Smith recognised that 65k empty seats at a game is a terrible look for the game and a terrible experience for fans, shame grant isn't as smart. How bad will st George v Titans look in ANZ?

Games like that will mostly be played at the suburbs as now but the games between the big sydney clubs should be played at a rectangular ground at an accessible location. I.e homebush.

Agreed, and if ANZ was a 65000 seat version of Suncorp, crowds would be much better.

To people who argue that Olympic Park is a terrible location with terrible transport options, do you live on the freaking moon?!?

For outsiders, this is Sydney: If anything, Olympic Park is even MORE central than Parramatta. It has its own train station 200m walk from the ground, If you have to change trains at some point it's not the end of the world, that's something everyone else has to do unless you build it on top of Central Station. Most people who catch trains do that a couple times a day commuting to work.

And the fact that all future population growth projections point WEST, look where Moore Park fits on that map. In fact any type of CBD stadium idea for our premium stadium is simply NOT future-proofing the scenario.

I for one see a great opportunity with Dave Smith's exit to torpedo the terrible Moore Park idea.

The only point that is half-persuasive is it has no developed entertainment precinct. How many people out there have made a choice not to go to a sports event because it is not convenient to go have dinner and a night out afterwards within walking distance? Serious question.

That entertainment precent will eventually come, you'd have to think.
I'd like to see a refurb at the SFS with steeper grandstand and a roof that actually keeps out rain for a change.

Less about location or pubs more about size. If ANZ was the NRL Sydney blockbuster derby game of the round every sunday afternoon venue and they pulled out all the stops to get 40-50k a game there then it would be ok, everything else at Parra or moore park or suburbs but you just know it is going to host a lot more club games and be terribly empty for most of them

Homebush being rectangular and offering better views plus a light rail line connecting Parramatta and Strathfield is a good step towards getting better crowds there

I've never had issues travelling to ANZ when I visit Sydney for a game. Easy in, fairly easy out. I just don't like the sight lines. If the stadium was redeveloped for rugby league, it would be near perfect! If there was not a entertainment precinct built as part of the redevelopment, clubs just need to provide it via pop up tents, vans etc like they do grand final day.
