The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

You should hear some of the Raiders members complain about our proposed new stadium site. If it’s going to be built it’s going to be smack bang in the middle of town, in the heart of the restaurant and nightlife precinct which will be awesome for pre and post game events. It’ll also be next to the Civic bus and light rail interchange. But because you won’t be able to drive up to the front door people are up in arms about it.

Some people are just impossible to please.

Classic Selfish NIMBY shit but reversed...

The crappy stadium is in a shitty location but, for a few thousand people, its still more convenient than the proposed great stadium in a central location.

At least we know it will remain the clubs training ground...

But Brooky will need more than this to achieve the bare mininum acceptably

Is there anywhere else North of the Harbour that a new stadium could be built for rectangular sports?

Would converting North Sydney Oval to a Rectangular stadium work with regards to location/transport? Would it work if they consider it could be used by an NRL, A-League and Super Rugby throughout the year? Or is it currently used more for sports that require an oval?

I doubt you could touch north Sydney oval for heritage reasons.

Some people have mentioned Chatswood oval before, perhaps Hornsby could be another option?

It wouldn't work as what saw the North Sydney Bears want to move to Gosford was the local council were gouging them for hiring fees for North Sydney Oval. If I remember correctly, the Bears were paying triple what other sports were paying to use the ground with the council justifying it on the basis that the Bears had greater revenue to draw on. North Sydney Council would probably do the same thing, and then you'd have too many people complaining to them about noise etc which would be connected to redeveloping the ground. In short it is highly unlikely to happen for those reasons.

North Sydney oval is heritage listed. Never happening.

I think upgrading Pittwater Park, Warriewood is the best bet. So much room to build on.

Both clubs could enjoy it. Might even be able to move the leagues clubs from Brookvale (or at least build a second base in that area).

It's better than throwing any more money at Brookvale Oval.

That's what I was thinking. Is the club being proactive in looking at possible new home grounds?

I think it's a generational thing. Every time my wife and I go out for dinner, or to an event, or get a new job, the first question my folks and other family members in their age range ask is 'oh, where do you park there?'. I had quite a good job in Ultimo until recently that my mother was astonished that I took because there was no parking, and after I left - to take a job more suited to my skill set for more money - she kept telling people the main reason I left was because of the commute, and because there was no parking.

In reality, I didn't mind the commute at all. I caught up on podcasts, or read a little bit. But to their generation if you can't get the rockstar park every time then it's not worth the effort.

Any major construction would likely be state govt owned though. They’d negotiate with north Sydney council or any other council to buy the property.

It’s still highly unlikely anything north of the harbour will happen.

Seems like a waste for government to fund a COE at a dump like Brookie without plans in place for its upgrading.

they gave nearly everyone CoE grants didnt they? Manly have no options it seems and still cling to the hope of redeveloping Brookvale one seat at a time. $75mill on a new main stand with 14k seats would be the start they really need to get the ground up to standard.

How are the transport links?

Thats the worst part about Brooky.

Surely the common sense answer here (if Manly are staying in Sydney) is that they train and base themselves at Brooky (where their COE and traditional home is) and play at the new Allianz Stadium.

State of the art stadium for members and corporates which will allow them to spread their footprint and expand financially. Let's face it they draw on the same demographic as the Waratahs and Swans and they have no trouble getting people to Moore Park for games. It just takes a bit of marketing and imagination, the Penn family are good business people, surely they could pull this off.

If the Norhern Beaches tunnel gets built it will certainly be more feasible. Should improve the trip dramatically, especially for people taking the bus.

Or at least do a Dragons-style split between central Sydney and the regional base
