Daz one idea I pondered the other day was making Penrith the HQ for the Matilda’s. They seem to get good crowds at Penrith and we could utilise them for an upgrade. Perhaps also the WSW women’s team.

Matildas would play only a handful of games per year in Sydney I would imagine?

NSW women's team would get crowds less than 1K.

I know, but it could also be sold at their training base. Would make it easier to sell the idea to politicians. Perhaps some Wanderers FFA cup or Asian Champions league games as well (when they get back there)

The Newcastle upgrade path is the way to go for Penrith. Do it in stages.

Newcastle is a major regional venue though. It tries to attract the Socceroos, Wallabies, Kangaroos, etc to matches there.

Penrith will always be a suburb of Sydney and close enough to Bankwest Stadium that it can never expect to receive anything more than minor funding. I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing, as far as suburban club grounds go it's one of the best.

They are about to build a concert venue in Brisbane over Roma Street station doing exactly that. It also really changes the dynamics of a place like that, as more entertainment opens up in that area to cater to those crowds.

Unfortunately they don't look like they are going to go down this path in Sydney. Too many vested interests in keeping it at Moore Park.
Plenty of earlier precedents too- Madison Square Garden is built over Penn Station in NYC.

Were these places built over stations that were already underground?

Penn wasn’t- it was like Central, had some underground and some surface portions.

With Central I don’t thing you’d actually put anything more underground- you’d just put in concrete piles then basically lay a massive slab above the existing ground level tracks and build the whole thing on top of that. Would make it a bit taller, but not my a massive amount and probably not an issue in the location.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but for the people asking about examples wouldn't building a stadium over the lines in at Central be basically the same as what they did in Melbourne with Federation Square at Flinders Street? except instead of buildings a stadium?

Yeah exactly, just lay a massive concrete slab over it. Except you’d put a stadium on the slab. Stadiums are actually relatively light structures for their size so it’s competely feasible.

(greenBV4 posted as I was typing out basically the same point as him. Here it is anyway.)

A deck was built over the railway lines leading into Flinders Street Station in Melbourne to build Federation Square. It’s a great way to reclaim land and for this particular location it links the city with the river. There’s even been talks to continue the decking further east to create even more public space.

Building a deck over Central Station for a stadium and other public space (I’m sure there’d be commercial space as well) would be such a positive thing for Sydney. Expensive, yes but you’re never going to see that much space open up in Sydney ever. I doubt it will ever happen but it would be so good if it did. It would be an amazing project.

Far too visionary and logical for your avg politician!

You could even sell it the public by re purposing the land the current allianz is on for something worthwhile like a new hospital lol

Massive chunk of space too, expending all the way down to Redfern. Imagine if it was a big open concourse all the way down to Redfern station.

I’m more talking the way they went about upgrades, not really the size. The stands as I understand it are also pretty bare bones.

Penrith would be fine with 25,000 capacity.

Depends what you mean by minor, but i’m not sure that’ll be the case. An outer Sydney stadium was part of the original stadium plan, I could see Penrith getting enough money to build a decent new stand down each side of the field. Especially if done in stages. Penrith may be in a position to contribute some money to it as well.

I’d go with an 9000 seat stand down each side, with 3500 capacity at each end. Initially the ends would just be hills.

ICONS ON THE MOVE

THE demolition of Allianz Stadium has officially begun.

And The Sunday Telegraph was there to witness the removal of some of the venue’s most treasured history on Thursday afternoon.

We spotted the statues of league greats Dally Messenger and Reg Gasnier being removed alongside rugby union legend Trevor Allan on the back of a truck in Driver Avenue.

No one is waiting around for wannabe premier Michael Daley, who has threatened to abandon the $730 million project if elected at the March state election.

Already, Sydney Roosters and NSW Waratahs have moved out.

The bulldozers will arrive after the Sydney cricket Test in the first week of January to begin the three-year construction work.

We’re told that the statue of Messenger will be reinstalled inside the SCG, probably near the grandstand that bears his name.

The statues of Gasnier and Allan will also reappear in the New Year around the SCG precinct, rather than remain in storage.

They will spend a couple of weeks at the foundry where they were cast for minor repairs and polishing before being installed in their new homes.

The 40,000 seats at Allianz won’t go to waste.

Already, venues in Gloucester, Cootamundra and Braidwood have put their hands up for free seats to fit out their local grounds.

The first of the country clubs, Gloucester Football Club, turned up at the stadium on Friday morning, loaded up on a free breakfast from Azure Cafe and then piled 1050 seats into a couple of semi-trailers to take home.

The SCG Trust is still taking requests and, if you are keen to get your hands on one, send an email to: sfsdevelopment@scgt.nsw.gov.au as soon as you can.
